    You saw that? ticking the fuse made the amps jump. Those type of fuseholders are notorious bad contact things. You should really check your Amps limiter on the power supply, it should be at max with the fuse in line. Fuses don't exactly pop at the rated Amps, there are graphs with time/amps pop point. Probably best to use a Fast (F) fuse. Means a thin wire and not a coil fuse.

      And it is. The stainless handle got so many drips of dilute nitric [50 x 50, 60 x 40, whatever ratio is achieved with a casual addition, that he had to deband it. Even the clear plastic handle suffered chemical dissolution to some extent. As he says, these chemicals can cause death. All of them cause problems to the fume hood and whatever space it vents to. Awesome video Kevin. Still reading and learning this process.
    If you refine your gold but find that their is still some copper left behind, can you eliminate the copper with aqua Regis? Or do you have to return to inquarting with silver?

    • @CothranMike
      @CothranMike 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No need to return to go to inquarting in the case of a bit of copper remaining, the silver content while low is still able to be parted with Nitric.
      Aqua regia should only be used at the last step to dissolve the gold as it also dissolves many other things that might be present hence the reason for multiple refinings with a variety of methods.
      Edited to add the answer to your question. Copper will dissolve in aqua regia and it will be dropped out of solution with the addition of a little sulfuric acid just like the lead.
      btw lead is essentially radioactive materials destination to some extent check the Half-Life products listings and tables to see what path some take.

      Conanthelibrarian antique diamonds, although as I say that I keep thinking antique diamonds my God aren't they all antiques, should be worth more.
      Edit for extras:
      The arbitrary value of the diamond has been manipulated for centuries. Industrial diamonds on the other hand are frequently harder. Black diamonds being some of the very hardest we've ever come across, and the reason we came up with cubic boron nitrate or CBN. I seen one charge for thirty seven hundred, another for six. She got up at 3am this morning. She left about 5:30 for the flea market. She will arrive at an estate sale three hours early just so she can be first in line, because if you wait, all the gold will be gone. This is what she does. It’s her “job” and she tries to get me to go, but I can’t sit there doing nothing for hours, waiting for the sellers to show up. Buying jewelry at local shops and sales is what she thrives on. Almost to a fault, it’s her passion and obsession all rolled into one. I hate digging through dead people’s stuff trying to find overlooked scrap gold. But I have gone with her and found thousands of dollars worth of gold, for just a few hundred. Without her, I couldn’t do this. I’d probably be punching a time clock at Home Depot right now. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me in life. She loves finding good jewelry deals, I don’t care for it much. I love refining, she can’t stand it. We are the perfect match.

    I just had an interesting thought, what if when you did an inquartation like this you were to weigh the gold/silver at different intervals while doing the nitric boils? I wonder how close to your estimated yield you would be able to measure, especially at the point you feel like you're done removing the silver. I know it's an estimate of course and you do lose some in the refining which you recover later but I think it could be interesting to see how much of the silver and other base metals are coming out in the nitric.

    There is no "probable" about still pulling silver when you are pulling copper from the gold. As you inquarted with sterling silver, there should be a lot more silver than copper in there. Taking into account the relative reactivity of silver and copper, you will still be pulling silver after you have finished pulling copper.

    hi sir. Question regarding your nitric boils - would it not be feasible to perhaps do the maths on exactly how much nitric is technically needed to dissolve the quantity of sterling you use? You quantify the amount at the start for the inquartation process, does it not stand to reason one could calculate, chemically & mathematically how much nitric would indeed be needed to strip the alloys off the gold? I understand that calc might not necessarily change your process, ie. multiple nitric boils, but it could give insight on quantities for the purpose of mitigating the risk of having to manage excess nitric usage. Surely there are constants available stating how many mils of nitric are needed to dissolve x-quantity of sterling, no? Thanks for the vids, really enjoy learning from you and watching you do these refinings. ciao, A.

      @@sreetips I am trying to refine some gold I have myself, this was my first attempt, I made a foolish mistake of inquarting with pure silver and no copper.
      As the pure silver goes into nitric the solution stays colourless and after the 2-3rd leeching it became very difficult to see if the nitric was even penetrating the gold, the NO2 fumes were negligible.
      Also i have a single piece I am trying to refine, I had approx 3gm 99.5 fine gold that I inquarted with close to 8.5gm pure silver, another mistake I did(I guess) is I did not melt it into shot but tried to refine it as a single piece. I have an ingot close to 11.5gm, is it to big for parting...?
      Also one last question does the concentration of acid has any influence on the process the nitric acid I use seems fairly old, I always need to heat it up before any reaction takes place, unlike your videos where the reaction starts as soon as you add the acid...
