I just watched that match again and it was just as awesome the second time as it was the first time. For Grace Gundrum at 16 years old to go head-to-head with Rikako is truly amazing. For those of you who don't know who rikako yuasa is, you should go watch some of her videos. She is a world-class jiu jitsu practitioner. And Grace matched her move for move for 10 minutes. That ref was just ridiculous.

I like watching women do jiu jitsu because you don't often see a lot of force being used. I do not mean this disparagingly. It's extremely technique oriented, which often leads to more active matches since their use of energy is so efficient. It feels more dense with lessons if observed closely than their average male counterpart. Anyone else feel this way?

  • @giuseppegallocorvus

Yuasa was dominant throughout the entire fight, turned down Grace's game as she knew all the tricks! but Grace refused to go to survival mode and fought back until the last second against a much more expert and strong opponent...she was already a real champion!!! Was it? I saw multiple opening that they didn't even try for when I know white belts that would have. Like the baratoplata opening from that first triangle, and later an opportunity for a darce against the 10th planet girl. But instead they were just like sitting there..

@@thekwoka4707 I can't speak to the more technical aspects of the match, but it looked like they were both doing what they could and didn't get frustrated. Neither of them gassed out, either. As you said, they both might have missed opportunities, but the effort and pose were there, imo. Given the nature of the sport, maybe they were overthinking it? Everyone talking bad about the ref should look up the rules of Quintet. The ref followed the rules perfectly for the event. This is non points based action prioritizing grappling. Competitors have to keep pushing for submissions. It's a sub attempt is not working, they have to move on to something else or risk a warning. I personally prefer this type of event. It pushes for offense based jujitsu as opposed to defense based jujitsu.

I am not versed with the rules of Quintet or bjj but why was the ref always warning them? from a laymen point of view I saw this contest going either way constantly with no stalemate to warrant standing them up. I thought it was judo that stood you up due to the emphasis on throwing techniques. For me both athletes looked formidable shame about the constant ref interference.

This is the greatest thing I've seen on the grappling mat ever since 2003 ADCC. In Dojo setting, Yuasa would get the young one. Yellow card Nazi was the reason there was no tapout in this.
