Shawn recorded all instruments on Powers of Ten, which is incredible. He’s one of the greatest musician that ever lived, easily. Not just one of the most amazing guitarists and pianists, but just musicians in general. He was light years ahead of so many players, and there was so much color and beauty in his playing. We’re lucky to at least have what little recorded material we have from him.
We were buddies from 85 to 90. Was an awesome guy. Saw him almost weekly in Memphis when he was with The Willys. Wasn't avante garde at the time...pure rock and roll
shawn lane, the guitarists guitarist. buckethead learned some of his crazy multi-finger tapping stuff by trying to emulate something he heard on a shawn lane cassette tape.
Yep, he took what Shawn played with a pick and turned it into two-hand tapping. Even Guthrie Govan -- probably the best alive at the moment -- has to play covers of Shawn's music using two-hand tapping, where Shawn played with alternate picking.
@@johndeeregreen4592 That's technically wrong; Buckethead created his two-hand, eight finger atonal tapping, "nubbing", he calls it, because of some tracks Shawn had done on The Tritone Fascination. Specifically, I think it was Kaiser Nancarrow, but I may be wrong. Essentially what Shawn did is layer multiple tracks atop each other repeatedly, emulating a famous composer he liked that would compose via sheets of paper that his pianos would read, allowing him to write songs that were physically unplayable, with dozens of notes per second. Shawn did something similar by stacking takes, creating crazy atonal lines that weren't actually playable. Buckethead got ahold of the tape and listened to it, but didn't know it had been layered so many times, and thought Shawn was just playing it all. In his attempts to learn the song, he developed his crazy eight finger tapping technique, which he later revealed to Shawn. With that said, Shawn has played some tapping licks and patterns solely with his pick and only fretting with his left hand, using the incredible stretches he was capable of, so you're not technically wrong about the fact that Shawn could play tapping licks just with his pick. This, however, was not one of those cases.
Shawn lane is a monster player !!!! Highly regarded by monster players today as one of greatest players in the world !!! Sadly he died at the age of 40 , He is such a melodic player technically he is beyond believe .
His biggest fan -- his mother Diana -- just recently passed away, as well. I knew both Shawn and his mother (not besties, but remained in contact since meeting him and her in Memphis during my gigging days). She made sure to circulate his music everywhere... so now it's up to the fans who are left.
What's incredible to me is Shawn points his guitar chops from the Master Art Tatum . I understood more about Shawn's playing once I listened to Art,then I was fuckn floored once again!!

Shawn Lane was the GOAT, his work with Hellborg will never be forgotten. Thanks to them.
The GOAT when recorded... something even beyond that live. He was one of those players who just got so in the zone when playing live.
Only after Holdsworth.

Shawn is one of those guitarist, who was even better live.
One trivia tidbit. He played ALL the parts.
You have to check out a live performance video of Shawn he had the craziest finger spread when playing leads.
his Atlanta georgia 1996 live set is pretty fucking ridiculous in terms of ability on stage lol.
Shawn just happened to be in about the top 99 percentile of keyboard players too.
The drums were played by hand on the keyboard.
Shawn Lane was the proof of extraterrestial life

Casiopea best jazz fusion band ever and it does go for ever
Memphis native
Watch the live REH version of "Not Again". A guitar solo so amazing, no one can play it!
Shawn loved Zappa..
Shawn Lane is the greatest guitarist of all time. There, I said it.
You'd be forgiven for thinking there may be some tapping involved in some of his solos. Fact is, he never did.
Must add. Go to "Centrifugal Funk" album. "Hey T Bone" feat. Shawn and Brett Garsed. Shredzilla.
Also the drums aren't drums but keyboards.. Inspired by Futureman.
Jonathan Joestar approves of Shawn Lane 😂😅
