    In this video I will show you the operational behaviour of a transformer and how we can alter it in theory and praxis in order to create a crude wireless energy transfer system. Along the way I will also talk about the QI standard and some of the disadvantages of wireless charging.

    How is it possible that @GreatScott, despite English being his second language, can more clearly and concisely explain electronics than any teacher I had in college?

      let's make a voting system for the teacher to encourage them...
      if they don't explain it properly the get a lower salary or anything other

      Part of the problem with a voting system like that is that students (and I am one!) don't always know what's best for them. For example, the end-of-course questionnaire that reviews the lecturer has a strong negative correlation with the difficulty of the course.
      More highly reviewed lecturers also tend to produce higher performance in the lectured module, but lower performance in subsequent models (this is from training data gathered by the US airforce, which has a small and tightly-controlled set of courses with randomly assigned lecturers).
      I don't want to take anything away from GreatScott who is clearly an excellent presenter with lots of background knowledge. Just want to point out that there are very good reasons why lecturing is not a popularity contest.

      Luke Wren but the school is mostly just a place where you sit, learn, go home and forget the stuff you have learned (for me)

      Then you should make better use of your time there! If you think that the course content is beneath you, it's YOUR job to seek out the things that interest you and find out more about them.
      I'll let you in on a secret: teachers are also not a fan of their curriculums. They are however generally fairly knowledgeable people, and usually VERY happy to help if you show initiative in going beyond the curriculum into greener, more interesting pastures.
      I'm not in a position to lecture you -- my school attendance was the lowest in my year. However, I have good memories of time spent talking to teachers before and after class, and generally learned more in that time than the rest of the lesson. There are lots of great opportunities for learning in school, just not always in the obvious places.

      Luke Wren i am interested in most of the subjects (digital art and so on, like photography, filming ...) but i "hate" th subjects like math...its not like i hate school, but they create their lessons sometimes so boring and useless...

    That's by far the best DIY wireless power transmission in TH-cam. Explains the theory in an understandable and focused fashion, and goes through the steps towards the system tuning. Great job!

    Great information! I don't own a wireless charger, and I always assumed that the base contained an iron core, similar to a metal detector using ferrous metals in passing vehicles as a core for presence detection in some traffic lights. I never considered using a tuned LC circuit! That is brilliant. I always enjoy your videos, and this one was even better than usual!

    This video particularly I've seen 5 times as my reference to my wireless charger project. Thank you..
    By the way, about the inefficiency of Qi charger you calculated in this video, please note that you put the mWh meter before the PCB transmitter which contains electronic. in my opinion, mWh meter should be placed after the pcb and before the coil. Let me know if I'm wrong.

    Great video, as always! I had a couple questions:
    When you calculate the resonant frequency for the 1st capacitor, you use the inductance you measured across the primary (I believe) with your inductance meter. Shouldn't it be about half that, since the meter would have seen the primary leakage inductance along with the cross inductance? Also, why do you put the second capacitor across the secondary instead of in series with it, like you do on the primary?
    Thank you for putting so much detail into your videos, while keeping them moving fast. I really enjoy them.

    You have saved me hours of experimenting trying to build my own wireless transmitter for my Samsung S7. I wish I had watched this before trying for a hour or so. Now I will try my own transmitter and receiver circuits to see if I can still charge my phone wirelessly. Any suggestions on good existing circuits?

    It may be inefficient, but it could be a nice way to transfer energy to fully sealed equipments and remove any possibility of bad connection during charge due environmental factors or when the connector could compromise the equipment in some way or it is too small to use a connector.
    Example:
    - fully sealed cameras or sensors that operates under severe conditions or water
    - send energy to equipments or sensors inside of animal or human without any invasive procedure (like changing batteries)
    - tiny autonomous quadcopter landing pad

    What an incredible explanation. Great work. I’m just now designing a wireless charger for camera equipment, it is powered from 12v car lighter boosting to 24volts at 1 amp current draw. Any ideas?

    a very informative video. i allways assumed some form of wireless resonant inductance was employed to charge a phone. the higher vhf frequencies 135mhz used by a commercial charge unit means the coil length would only have to be around 55cm quarter wave to be resonant, i wonder what the range would be if the coil was resonant to a very low frequency tesla would be proud.

      My project plan is to use my Pc's psu to power up the wireless charging station wich is inside my PC's plastic top plate so I can drop my phone on it and charge it :D I didn't ordered the kit jet, I was planing about it but I see that you've used a different kit. I'll wait a bit ;D

      There are kits which uses DC and does the same thing, GS showed a circuit at the end part of the video which does that :D Watch that and you will know what I mean :)

    I am interested in the 'design' of the 'coil'. RFID/NFC coils also receive/transmit power.
    Any idea about design restrictions? What about the max resistance of the materials that can be used for the coil?

    DIY QI receiver is actually very easy. Specification is open and I did it few years ago implementation in micro.
