How to make the Tesla Model 3 Performance as FAST as possible

    This video will explain how to get the most performance out of the Tesla Model 3. 100% stock in sport mode without any preconditioning the Model 3 Performance is capable of doing 0-60 MPH in 3.28 seconds without subtracting the 1 foot rollout or 3.10 seconds with the 1 foot rollout subtracted.
    Bone Stock without any preconditioning directly before the run it is capable of doing the 1/8 mile in 7.37 seconds @ 95+ mph and the ¼ mile in 11.55 seconds @ 116 mph. However, you need to have at least 95% battery charge and you really need to Supercharge within half an hour of the run to get at least some heat in the battery.
    CarWow and other sites have typically stated a ¼ mile time of 11.7 seconds or more for a Model 3 Performance. They aren’t setting the car up properly which totally misrepresents what the car is capable of. If they follow the instructions in this video they can get those ¼ mile times all the way down to 11.43 @ 117+ mph for a 100% stock Model 3 Performance with the 20” UberTurbine wheels or 11.27 seconds @ 121.79+ mph with that car and some modifications.

    I switched to the same 18 in rims. Mainly for potholes destroying my 20 in rims. The extra speed is a great perk. Great video

    Not many talk about EV performance and battery temp, but it definitely is a thing!!
    I have a 22' Tesla S Plaid with the OEM 19" wheels. When its cold out out I'll consistently get a 5.4 60-130 mph (per my Dragy) if I do the run right away or first several minutes of driving at 90% SOC (State Of Charge) vs a 4.6 to 4.8 60-130 at 80-85% SOC(yes lower%) with a warm battery. Drag strip mode 100% ready seems to ensure peak performance in the Plaid. Testing results are valid and at same road/location...
    To an extent, battery temp may even be a bigger factor than SOC. The difference can be felt SOTP as well...

    I feel like Tesla should just implement a max performance mode that acheives this without having to route to a supercharger.

      Tesla has done that with their Model S and Model X vehicles but not with their lower vehicles yet. Until they do you can use the S3XY buttons to accomplish the same thing. Preconditioning can be turned on at will with the S3XY buttons now. Those can also monitor temperatures and the “Max Discharge” rate so you know exactly when performance is optimal.

      Hi, please could you explain this to me as if I was a dummy! As I don’t understand.
      Can the SEXY button keep full power when blasting around country roads, or is this just for the quarter miles?
      I love my model 3 performance….. until it goes under 95% haha

      This isnt real world performance. U have to heat up the battery and be at 98% or better charge. THATS NOT REAL WORLD AND UR ON A TRACK WITH BETTER GRIP. Stop posting on every vid of a model 3 doing a 11.8 quarter mile. That's a real world time for the model 3. If u have to take all these steps that's not real world.

      ​@@ej5376 hi , no they wont he states that the buttons are for monitoring the temperature of his batteries and motors , also he can monitor kw/h draw , those buttons if im not 100% they can connect the tesla ecu on board computer to your phone they can modify car parameters on the go ( or on the fly )

    The difference is insane between the 18s and 20s. I’ve been using a performance on 18s for about a month. Then I bought my own with 20s and I thought the car was an AWD with the acceleration boost.
    18s make the car violent, 20s make it feel 50bhp less! Sucks as I love my 20s, but they are going ASAP!

      @@MAli-nw4jqMy Dragy has read a 3.09 with the 20s. I’ll have to take the dragy in the one with 18s. We are taking them both to Santa Pod UK in summer. So, I’ll get some photos and hopefully videos

      I have spacers on my underturbines … i ran 5 x 11.6 runs as santapod but my trap times were all 114 ish not v high.
      Be interesting to try the smaller wheels and do you think the spacers are slowing me down too

      When you say 18's, is it the overall diameter on the 18's is less than the 20's, if so, by how much?

      ​@mrjohn2626 that was my question... the overall diameter is virtually the same, so isn't it really just the weight that is the factor? A 235/35/20 (factory setup) is 26.48" in diameter, whereas the 18" set up is 235/45/18 and 26.33" in diameter... so it's 0.15" smaller in diameter, which is negligible. So, is there something to be said about the actually wheel diameter being smaller, or is the overall diameter all that matters?

    Nice runs and explanation fellow Model 3 owner! I used to do quite a bit of drag racing til the nearest track eventually stopped allowing EV's and subsequently shut down. Great points and tips in your vid most people don't think about. I personally am Ghost modded so turned my 2018 DM 3 into a Stealth M3P. Went with lightweight TSW Nürburgring 18x8.5 18's and PS4S tires. Also switched to MPP lithium 12v battery to shave another 23 pounds off. With the back seats out, I've managed an 11.33 run around 97% at the strip. At 80k miles though, don't think I'll manage better than that time again due to battery degradation. I'm around 19% loss unfortunately, due to having done hundreds upon hundreds of hard pulls. No regrets though. Maybe I'll get around to getting lighter bucket seats in the front and go for it again at another track but without having charging near that one, it won't be ideal runs. Love to see someone going out to explain things for the community and also sorry about the loss of your son. Hope the best for your recovery from that.

    I need to get mine a full quarter mile run and some track runs. My '23 M3P on a 76% charge, on the street just driving home from work, with no pre conditioning, got a valid dragy 0-60 3.07 (1ft rollout). I let out before the 1/8th clocked in due to lack of straight flat area to stay in throttle but still managed a 1.80 60 ft. Crazy for the street and especially on that charge level. I plan on ditching the uberturbines next year but going 19" as a happy medium between 18 and 20.

    Thanks for this awesome detailed video! You just inspired me to try out mine today with dragy.
    Stock 22 M3P best 1/8th was 7.35 at 95mph on a 80% charge. 0-60 was a 3.25 without rollout. It think the preconditioning definitely helps and I’d never thought of that before 🤔. I’m going to try again with a 95% and see if it improves. Keep up the good work! Look forward to seeing your next times!

      Definitely try the full preconditioning with a full or near full battery. It really works. Let the preconditioning go until it shuts off. The moment it shuts off will be your max power. Remember to shutoff navigation and A/C before you start the run though.

      Got it to a 7.26 with a better charge! 2.99 0-60 with .2 of rollout. Trap speed is still lower at 96, but I’d expect it to be until I change the wheels. These cars are decently faster than they are advertised to be

    Sat in the brand new Highland Performance 3 last night. Beautiful car and live the front splitter , new spoiler and diffuser. It was blue, white interior, build date 05/02/24 . It was ready for delivery, so they’re hitting the streets. Not sure I am liking those front seats though as they are bolstered tight for driver and passenger. Not as comfy as my old Model 3 Performance. The UI was quicker than old Model 3 though.

The 2024 is a steal for new Tesla buyer's if you qualify for fed and state tax credits. If they offer OTA updates to boost performance over the next few years that would be perfect.

    Interesting video, well done! 52.4 degrees Celsius is 126.32 F rather than 94 F as mentioned in the video at 3:44. Considering the rear and front motors' efficiencies of ~ 97.5 - 98% and ~95.5 - 96% respectively, with an additional ~5-5.5% loss in the gear box you still have ~89% of the 462 kW (619.5 HP) on the wheels, which is ~ 555 HP. I measured with my OBD LinkLX a combined front and rear power max. output of 438 kW (588 HP) with my Model 3P 2021 model.

      Good catch on the Celsius conversion mistake. I will try to put a disclaimer text on that. Not sure how I got that wrong but I did.
      I think the true wheel Horsepower of this car at full potential is closer to 550 hp than 500 hp. However, I don’t have any direct evidence to confirm that other than the 11.271 @ 121.79 mph 1/4 mile time.

      @@LearningFast My ‘22 model 3 LR with accel boost can do 11.5 on its best day and averages 11.6-8… I’ve heard rumors that the LR comes with 450 and then the boost unlocks 50 more.. So it would only make sense that the P has 550.

    I wondered why my M3 Performance was a bit lacklustre recently. Will change to 100% and warm up the battery by telling it is time to find a supercharger and take it for a spin.

      You don’t even have to get to 100%. 95%+ is pretty good as long as you get the battery hot enough. It even works if the temperature outside is cold. My record run was done on a cold morning. Battery still got hot.

    The Martian MW03 are 19.1lb, compared to your 22lb Tsport TS5. So you can save a little more weight, for $400 more. Mine are on their way, and I’ll put Pilot Sport All Season 4s on.

      I looked at the Martian wheels but they had significant delays in shipping when I got my wheels. They are a good option though. Nice and light for a decent price. The Michelin PS4S tires are much better than the PSAS tires are for traction. I am doing some traction testing today to see how important that is for the Model 3 Performance.

    Its funny because i used to race 1/10th scale awd rc cars in tournaments, and we wouod always run super aggressive discharge / charge cycles on our batteries to give us the most C rating we couke get for our races. We would also always say, i wish they made real life rc cars you can drive. Now they do, and you do the same thing with ghe battery to race them 😂

    Thanks for this video. I thought about doing everything you said, but I figured let me just try to just run the car however it is when I get to the track. I powered braked the launch like I would do to a regular ICE car and ran a 11.539 @ 117 at 78-80% charge with more weight in the car than stock, so you really don't need to have a full charge to run 11.5s. Ran a 11.6 the first pass too at 88 percent charge. Video is not up yet, but I will post it soon. I need to learn how to launch the car though because my best 60' was only a 1.855. I think the best tips in the video are the charge % and lighter wheels.

      Don’t try to power brake the launch. It won’t help and most of the time it will just freak out and not launch at all. It will run 11.5s stock even if you cool the battery with Track Mode. However, you could just heat the battery and run 11.4s so I am not sure why everyone doesn’t do that.

      @@LearningFastI tried some time consuming stuff to get my time faster, but then I realized I had been breaking traction. Lowered the tire pressure down to 38 psi and I ran an 11.3 finally. Did you adjust your tire size in the Telsa settings after you changed to 18s? I changed min to one of the 18" tire settings but not really sure if that helps at all. I am only trapping 118 max, and 117 on my quickest pass. Your trap speed is a lot higher than mine. Wondering if your aero mods are helping that out or if the extra 8% charge you have is doing it.

      @@offworkhours I air my tires all the way up. Sometimes as high as 50 psi to reduce resistance and maximize trap speed. Traction is rarely an issue on a well prepared track. I have tested all sorts of tire size. It doesn’t really make a difference at all. Weight reduction matters the most.

      @@LearningFastI'm definitely having traction issues. I put cameras on the car to make sure it was my car and not the person I was racing or someone doing their burnout behind me. Weight reduction helps but I think your aero mods are helping more than you think. I tried some aero mods and picked up one mph, but I need to do more testing to confirm which of them had the most impact.

      Remember that is the power at the battery. That still has to go through the motors and single gear set. There are still losses there before it gets to the wheels. Dynos show it is about 535 HP to the wheels.

    I'm curious as to the lighter 20" wheels. Vs the lighter 18" wheels. I have Forged 20's on my M3P and they shave approx 100lbs off the weight of the stock wheels. Cost over 8k for that 100lb difference though. LOL

      It probably won’t make a significant difference because you aren’t making the wheel diameter smaller. All of the weight isn’t moving closer to the center of the wheel like it does with an 18” wheel as opposed to a 20” wheel.
      Lightweight 20” wheels are definitely not as beneficial as 18” wheels even if the 20” wheels weigh slightly less than the 18” wheels.

    You can go race car mode. Strip out all glass , seats , truck, doors ,airbags and replace with plexiglass, aluminum or CF panels . Add a roll cage and race seat so you don’t die. Then see how fast it is.
    If I actually didn’t daily drive my M3P I’d try to turn it into a off road car . Put custom long travel suspension, go wide fenders , roll cage. Maybe 33” tires. Nice strong aftermarket off road CV axles so they don’t break with all that Tq. Do you know how much fun it would be in the dunes or flying across the desert ?

      @@arabarkev yes, 18s feel much better as far as ride and noise comfort. I put the stock wheels back on last week and I just couldn’t take it. Ride felt and especially sounded too rough.

    IF a 20" tire in 235/45 has a diameter of, say, 26", then an 18" 235/45 will be approx 24.5" or 5% smaller and so that would be like going from a 3:70 rear end to a 3:90 or a 3:90 to a 4:11

    Got 11.78 but got small 7.5x18 Martian Wheels BUT NangKang 215/50x18 (all season, less width and lesser known brand) so I think going with the 1” of now even 1.5” less wide (stock was 8.5” and now 9”) on the forged wheels gets great weight drop.

    Thanks for all this info! I recently got a Model Y Performance and have always been a drag racer and wanted to try it, I preconditioned, supercharged from 60-100% and got to the track and made a pass at 92% SOC in a completely stock MYP and ran a 11.77 which is as fast as I’ve seen so far. Definitely want to try preconditioning at the track and maybe even try to charge at the track. Definetely want to get some 18-19” wheels as well. I’m only 3h from rockingham so I might make a trip up there to see what I can get it to do.

      That definitely is fast for a Model Y. Lighter and smaller wheels make an even bigger difference for the Model Y because it starts with 21” wheels and 18” wheels can fit. I predict a Model Y Performance can do an 11.3 if everything is optimized and you have some weight reductions.

      It can degrade the battery faster if you charge to 100% often but honestly it doesn’t seem to do that much damage. My car is about .03 seconds slower than when it was new. That is a totally insignificant loss unless you are going for records.

    Thanks for your video, learned a lot from it. Went to our local track and was able to do a 11.482 run @ 115.99mph with my 22 Model 3 Performance. I'm running 18" Apex Forged Wheels with 265/40R18 Michelin Pilot 4S Tires. That run was made with 97% charge. Unfortunately seems like track is too far from the closest supercharger so using navigation to the closest wasn't triggering the preconditionning... The larger tires choice might also add some rolling resistance for drag use.

      Were you able to monitor the battery inlet temperature through the OBD2 port? I bet your battery was already warm so it wasn’t the distance from the charger. Instead your battery was already warm but not up to optimal temperature. Next time turn on track mode for about 7-10 minutes while stopped and then turn it off and navigate to the supercharger. That will allow you to get to optimal battery temps and max discharge rate. 11.48 isn’t a bad time though especially if the track doesn’t have an optimal downhill slope. 265 tires are pretty wide too. Great for Autocross but not as good for drag racing in this particular car.

      Will finally get my hands on the Commander and the Phone Mount to monitor the battery temp better. Just wanted to ask, is it possible to enable preconditionning with the actual S3XY Buttons, I'm not a fan at all, but I would like to activate Preconditionning with the app and without the need to navigate to a supercharger cause like you already know it, sometime battery is already warm and then you need to activate track mode and waste lot of SOC to get it cool then hot again... Not much tracks with Power Outlet in Canada sadly. Thanks again for all your help toward Tesla owners!

      Track mode hurts you in drag racing. You want the batteries hot not cold.

    Why does your front stator say 215c? That's over 400 degrees. No way it's that warm. Are you manipulating the sensor for some sort of advantage?

      There was a bug in the S3XY buttons app when I did this testing before. It always read 215C for the front motors. They have fixed it now and it reads more normal values. However, I did get it to read over 170 C recently when hot lapping the car. Performance will degrade quickly if the rotors get that hot.

      Turning off obstacle aware is definitely a good tip. I will remember to do that next time. However, turning off “Hold” would make staging hard. Shallow staging allows you to maximize the 1 foot rollout.

      I switched to the new Hankook iON EVO AS tires. I was able to run an 11.24 @ 119+ mph 1/4 mile on those all season tires and I am now averaging 237 wh/mi in a Model 3 Performance during the winter. To be able to achieve that acceleration and that efficiency is quite impressive.

    Why would the wheel diameter matter, when the actual diameter is practically the same? For ex: a setup with 235/45/18 wheel/tire is 26.33 inches in diameter whereas a setup with 235/35/20 wheel/tire is 26.48 inches in diameter. The overall diameter is the same, yet it is mentioned that to achieve the higher performance, it's not just the weight that is a factor, but also rotational mass. Is that mass not identical as I just pointed out or am I somehow calculating the rotational mass wrong? I would assume that overall diameter is all that would matter, so an 18" setup that weighs the same as a 20" setup would yield the same exact result, given that their diameters are almost identical. Can anybody weigh in?

      Wheels are more dense than tires. Reducing the wheel diameter while increasing the tire thickness actually reduces the weight and brings it closer to the center of the wheel. That reduces the total rotational inertia and increases acceleration. It also improves ride comfort and increases protection against road hazards.

      ​@@LearningFast so, you're saying that even if the wheel/tire combo has an identical diameter and weight, the smaller wheel is going to perform better because the wheel weight is more condensed and there is more tire? So spinning a wheel that's smaller but weighs exactly the same, is easier to do opposed to a larger wheel, simply because the mass of the wheel is reduced and the mass of the tire is increased? I'm having a hard time following that logic when total weight and total diameter are the same in both cases - NOT that I don't believe you are correct, just that I don't get the logic. To me, total diameter and weight should be all that matters. The car still has to spin a total diameter of 26", why then does it matter how that weight is distributed? For ex: why would an 20 lb 18" wheel with a 22lb 45 wall tire be easier to spin than a 20 lb 20" wheel and a 22lb 35 wall tire?

      @@joshkane534 it is all about where the mass is. With the wheel almost all of the mass is in the rim of the wheel. If you move that mass in 2 inches towards the center hub then it will greatly reduce the rotational inertia of the wheel. With a tire all of the mass is in the tread. If you make the sidewall taller you don’t actually change the rotational inertia of the tire that much at all. Watch the video below starting at 9:55.     I put on the 18” Martian wheels that are fully forged aluminum on my 3P and also picked up some lighter weight rotors (- 4.5 lbs per rotor vs stock rotor) and I need to get around to installing them because the stock brakes suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I’m curious to see what my times will be after installing the light weight rotors. Oh, I also use Raceseng titanium lug nuts too.

    What’s the best mode to use while at the strip? I use “hold” mode for daily driving, but I think “roll” would be better. Or MAYBE “creep”, but that would require the use of both feet

      It doesn’t matter as far as which one is quicker. They are all the same. I use Hold because it just makes everything more simple.

      If traction isn’t an issue then I would think a higher tire pressure would be better. Low tire pressure will just cause more friction and probably limit your trap speed. I run 46 psi in my tires at the track.

      Did you check the road grade? You can quickly know by doing runs in both directions. Wind direction and density can play a big factor as well. Warmer ambient temps decreases air density and can make you faster by reducing drag.

      @@TheGomezIndustries I did all of my runs at Dragstrips so they only allow you to run one direction. I ran a Dragy for all of my runs too so I can get a rough estimate of slope from that. All of my fastest runs were done at the Rockingham Dragstrip which is an NHRA track and meets the < -1% slope requirement. I did have tailwinds for several of the runs and that does make a difference but you can’t control the weather. For my wheel tests all of the conditions were similar.

    Quick question, I know you mentioned that you're running the Michelin PS4S tires, but what exact sizing are you running? 245/45/18 seem to be closest to the stock overall diameter, but 235/45/18 is what is normally run on 18in wheels for Teslas. Awesome video overall! Super pumped to pick up my Tesla next month and swap the wheels the second I get it haha! Thanks in advance!

      I got 235/45/18 Michelin PS4S tires. They are about a 1/4 inch smaller outer diameter than the stock 20” tires but that is an insignificant difference.

      No, slip start doesn’t help at all. Just put it in Sport Mode and heat the battery until “Preconditioning for Supercharging” turns off. That will give you max acceleration above 40 mph.

    All EU models delivered after Q1 (March) 2022 - come with the LG 79Kwh battery which cannot put out the same power levels as the previous Panasonic 82kWh. US models still get the panasonic, but everything out of China Giga Shanghai which delivers all EU bound model 3's, now come with the LG 5L battery.
    The LG battery maximum power output begins to drop as soon as SOC drops below 100%. It's not dropped by much by 90% SOC but it is down on what the panasonic can do even at 70% SOC. The reason for this is the panasonic has a lot more headroom in it, and it's power output is capped - only when the SOC reaches about 70% does it's output drop start to drop below the power cap.
    The LG battery has a higher internal resistance, so it's output voltage sags a lot more than the panasonic. Tesla have tried to compensate for this with allowing a higher current output (1250 amps), to try and get the power output (voltage x current) as good as possible - but it is still not able to achieve the power levels of the panasonic.
    The supercharging speed is also a bit slower (28 vs 25 mins 10-80%), again because of the internal resistance the battery begins to overheat.
    As a result, without modifications it cannot achieve below 11.7s on the quarter mile, and it's 0-100 is never better than 3.5s (or 0-60 better than 3.3). It's 100-200km/h is also more noticeably slower.
    My best results, bone stock, completely flat straight road, measured with a dragy, SOC 85-90%, ambient ~12c
    0-60 - 3.33s (3.15 1ft)
    0-100 - 3.53 (3.33 1ft)
    1/4 mile - 11.72 @ 113.74 mph
    100-200 - 10.88s
    Battery was warmed up - not by supercharging, just with a lot of high speed and regen prior to tests.

      Most of what you said is accurate. However, the China made Model 3 Performance cars can in fact go a lot faster than what you listed. I have done almost Forty 11.3x 1/4 mile passes now. You can’t come anywhere near the temperatures needed just by driving the car. You absolutely MUST precondition the car for almost 15 minutes to get optimal temperatures and power.
      Several Chinese made Model 3 cars have matched the US based car’s 3.2 second or better 0-60 mph. They probably fade some at higher speeds but if you optimize temperatures I bet you could do an 11.3x 1/4 mile even with a Chinese made Model 3 Performance.

      @@LearningFast It's not the fact it's Chinese - its the fact its Q2 2022 onwards (and Chinese)....prior to Q2 2022, all Chinese Model 3 performance cars used the Panasonic battery. Q2 onwards they use the weaker LG battery. Also the LG battery warms up a lot more easily than the Panasonic (the higher internal resistance results in greater power losses as heat)
      Regardless, i'll perform some more tests in the next few days with battery preconditioning - i'll let you know of any improvements in the times...i hope there are, but i'm doubtful.

      @@blower1 definitely give the preconditioning a try. Let it run until it stops saying “Preconditioning”. That takes about 15 minutes sometimes. However, it makes a gigantic difference especially above 60 mph.

      @@LearningFast Just been out to try the preconditioning. Preconditioned for 20 minutes (nav to supercharger, selected precondition etc). Cancelled precondition/nav a minute before the runs.....however as I suspected, there is no real improvement.
      SOC @ 90% (was 95% b4 preconditioning and a bit of driving), Ambient 15c. 3 runs, best below
      1/4mile - 11.68s @ 114.54 mph
      100-200kmh - 10.9s (rolling start at around 90km/h)
      0-60 - 3.34s
      I believe this is just the limit of this LG 5L battery and it's lower power output. 100% SOC may get me a small amount more, but that's very difficult to do as my test run section is 10 miles away. Either way a Q2 2022 onwards EU Model 3 performance cannot put out the same sort of numbers as the previous Panasonic based models. It's not down a massive amount and it does just about meet the advertised spec's for 0-60 etc - but there is no getting super low 1/4 mile or 100-200 times with these without mod's.

      @@blower1 we don’t have the EU models here and I know they do have some differences. However, you really need to know the “battery inlet temp”, “mid pack temp”, and “max discharge” value to know for sure what is going on. Those three numbers tell you everything about what the maximum performance of the car is. Any chance you can get an OBD2 reader to check those values?

      There isn’t any launch control for the Model 3 or Model Y cars. Model X and Model S Plaid cars have a Dragstrip mode. They really need to add some sort of launch control to the lower cars. That would make all of the difference.

    hey i just got my tesla model 3 performance. to get the best 1/8th mile time when racing should i charge to 100% and preheat battery and put it in the gps before racing.. i do a lot of 1/8th mile time racing and i’m trying to figure out how to get the fastest time.. i have the 20 inch uber turbine wheels and i don’t plan on changing them so can u give me some tips .. i’m gonna screenshot what u reply and try it at track. thanks man.

      Yes, heating the battery completely is a must for 1/8 mile racing. You need to monitor temperatures with a Canbus device like the S3XY buttons. I strongly recommend switching to lightweight 18” wheels and tires. That will help your times as well. You don’t have to charge to 100% but I would recommend charging to at least 95%.

      I haven’t tried slip start myself. I will try it next time. My hypothesis is that it will be slower but I don’t have any data for that yet. Testing will tell.

      I tried slip start finally and it made zero difference in time. I wouldn’t use that feature if I am trying for max acceleration. I don’t think it helps.

      You can program one of the S3XY buttons to start preconditioning or you can execute it from the app remotely if you are within Bluetooth range. It is a new feature so I haven’t fully tested it yet. However, I am going to the track tomorrow so I will test it out then and report back.

    How much do tires affects 0-60? Since it’s AWD I’ve read that the tire grip doesn’t matter as much as the rim size since it’s not traction limited because of the AWD. Would switching from the Michelin PS4S summer tires to a different tire like the stock Primacy MXM4 all weather tire cause a slower 0-60?

      Tires are almost irrelevant especially on a prepped surface. If it is wet out tires could matter. However, on dry surfaces even streets the tires won’t help much at all with the Model 3. The Plaids are a whole different ballgame.

      I tried the new “Preconditioning” option. While it showed an icon indicating it was working it didn’t actually heat up the battery. I have a support ticket in with them to try to get it to work. Would be a game changer if it does work.

      I have also now raised the issue. I have also sent this feature request:
      "This feature would go well with the 0 60 stats etc. For optimal performance, the battery inlet should be around 52c. Would be good to have a dragstrip/performance button where it preheats the battery to 52c, turns off the aircon, and other settings for optimal performance. Then when the max discharge is greater than say 400 kw the dashboard shows an image "max performance ready" or something like that.
      This would take away all the guesswork out of optimising the car for performance and i'm sure this would be great for sales making people opt for S3XY than a Draggy."

      @@LearningFast I'ma do my damnest to beat those tonight. Came up with a "launch mode" that really helps the 60'. Mine is a LR AWD. I shaved 2/10ths off my 1/4 and was 60' 1.9 with no acceleration boost. Installed ghost module a few days ago. Haven't tried it with the ghost yet but should be best 60' ever? Wish me luck.

    Does your car ride better with the 18” T Sportlines?
    One other thing, tire pressures? Since Model 3P is all wheel drive, have you considered , like most, using higher tire pressures since the car rarely and barely spins on clean dry pavement or asphalt?

      I used 42 psi cold for most of my runs. Typically about 44-45 psi when the tires are warm. I tried 36 psi and it definitely gave a wider contact patch but it didn’t improve the 0-60 mph at all. Higher pressures seem to give me higher trap speeds. High pressures really hurt handling feel though.

      They are nice looking but honestly they aren’t that light even at 17 lbs. They only come in 19” sizes and larger. There are forged 18” wheel options that are about 19 lbs. Those are going to offer similar performance for a lot less money.
      I want a carbon fiber 18” option that weighs 14 lbs. Now that might be worth paying extra for.

      I have the T Sportline TS5 wheels and Michelin PS4S tires. I bought their plug and play package which included the wheels, tires, and TPMS sensors for about $3,000. They fit perfectly right away without any modifications. All T Sportline wheels are designed to fit the Tesla vehicles without modifications.

    Excellent video! Why does HP drop so quickly after about 50 MPH? I have noticed on my '22 M3P that it softens a bit at higher speeds but seeing the numbers fall precipitously on the graph really surprised me. Also curious if you have any experience with the Hankook Ion Evo tires. I recently put some on my car and I'm very pleased with them - great traction, very quiet, and the seem to hold up well in the wet. Next time I need to replace tires I'm going with the TS Sport's in 18"...these 20's are a bit much for this car. Love how they look, but you can definitely feel them.

      Horsepower drops for several reasons. The particular motors in the Model 3 Performance can’t sustain power at high rpms like the Plaid motors can. Also most EVs have a single fixed gear ratio so they can’t shift into a different gear to go back into their power band. I have the 235/45/18 Hankook iON EVO AS tires on my 18x8.5 T Sportline wheels right now. Efficiency is quite outstanding with them. I was able to run an 11.24 @ 119.42 mph 1/4 mile with them at the track. They really are an outstanding tire.

      @@LearningFast Those are great numbers, I really wish I had gone to 18's instead of replacing the 20" rubber. If Tesla still had the option of equipping the car with 18's I honestly would have as there is no benefit using a large, heavy rim with a rubber band around it, lol. It's all for aesthetics. However, glad to hear your experience with the Evo's is positive. Validates my own experience with them. They are seriously a fantastic tire. I deliberated for a couple weeks before ordering them because I wasn't convinced they could be as good as Michelin or the P-Zero's that came on the car...I'm 100% happy with them in all aspects.

Be at 100% state of charge. That is not REAL WORLD times. Real world as shown in every car wow video is 11.8 sec . He is also getting these times on a track which improve ur time alot with its better grip then street surfaces.

      I wanted plug and play wheels, tires, and TPMS sensors. There are lighter and cheaper options but they typically require modifications to the car. Also T Sportline had these in stock so everything shipped right away. They work well for my needs.

      Well, that isn’t what you have to do at all. You just simply click the button on the screen to navigate to a Supercharger. You don’t actually have to go to the Supercharger for it to heat the battery. It is kind of like hitting the “Sport Mode” button in an ICE car. A lot of them default to ECO or Standard mode and you have to hit the sport button each time you get in the car. This is similar. You have to hit the precondition button anytime you want absolute maximum performance.

      The highest max discharge value is achieved with 100% SOC and about 52.3 degrees C battery temp. However, you can go down to about 95% SOC and still get optimal times. Once you get too far away from 52.3 degrees C performance will suffer. Battery temperature is more important for performance after 40 mph.

      I haven’t directly tested the Model Y Performance but it should react in a similar fashion. However, the wheels and tires on the Model Y Performance are ridiculously HEAVY! Changing those to 18” wheels has an even greater affect on acceleration.

    What's needed for a Model 3 performance to trap 120+ mph?

      You have to heat the battery to optimal temperatures(~52.4 degrees C). You have to switch to light weight 18” wheels and tires. Finally, you really need a track that is about -.99% downhill. With those things you should be trapping 120+ mph. My best trap was 122.91 mph but I took the seats out for that run.

      @@csammy123 the slope really can affect the trap speed a lot. Down to -.99% is allowed in drag racing. It makes a big difference. It can be 3-4 mph if compared to an uphill surface in the 1/4 mile.

    I didnt find a video about why rim size is important. If you have smaller rims you wheel diameter get bigger. So the total wheel weight is indeed more important than diameter. Or do you have a smaller wheel diameter than stock? Cause then thr speedo is a little off? Thanks for the detailed video :D

      Starting at 9:55 in the video below Jason from Engineering Explained talks about why smaller rims with taller tires help acceleration. The outer diameter of my tires on the 18” rims is essentially the same as the outer diameter of the tires on the 20” rims.

      So a superlight 20" rim would be faster than a 18" heavy rim and a 18" superlight would be faster than a 20" superlight. As it can get even lighter and has a closer center of mass.

      @@DarkSilverRiku no, the tire material is typically lighter than the wheel material. Moving the more dense wheel material in towards the wheel center helps acceleration even if you don’t change the outer tire diameter.

      I don’t believe 10s are possible with a Model 3 Performance that can function as a normal car. 11.0 maybe but I really don’t think 10s are possible without taking the dash and sound deadening out. You would probably need to remove another 250 lbs from where my car was at when it went 11.17 to get consistent 10s.

    You keep saying smaller 18" wheels, while lighter weight wheels/tires does help I assume you also mean the tire diameter is shorter which effectively gives you a lower gearing also.

      No, I went to an 18” wheel with a 45 series sidewall. The stock tires are 20” with a 35 series sidewall. The outer diameter of those two tires is within .2” of each other. That difference is negligible and gearing doesn’t affect horsepower anyway.

So your performance improvement came from a light weight wheel/tire combo. People who race and look at all the variables want to know the tires diameter also.     What about your top speed? I believe the reason Tesla went with bigger rims so that you'll have thinner rubbers thus reducing rotational inertia which is critical at high speeds.

      That isn't how that actually works. The 18" wheels have less total rotational inertia. However, rotational inertia only matters for acceleration not top speed. Top speed really just depends on power and wind resistance.

Take note, the new model 3, I believe, are now using much smaller rims for comfort but they have to lower the top speed accordingly.       No, traction really isn’t an issue at a well prepped track. The wider tires would probably just slow the trap speed down. A Model S Plaid is different though. It can always use sticky tires even on a well prepped track.

      No, the Model 3 Performance will do 0-60 mph in 3.28 seconds completely stock with the 20” Uberturbine wheels without any preconditioning, regardless of the temperatures, but it needs to be flat ground or slightly downhill. Uphill is the only thing that really hurts the Model 3’s 0-60 mph time. It can do 3.28 seconds 0-60 mph easily. A stock one can get down to 3.24 for a true 0-60 mph if it is slightly downhill but still “valid”.

There is still about 3 KW more that I could get out of it. 11.19 @ 122+ mph is probably possible if you can get a run in at 100% SOC and 462 KW max discharge.

      @@drx630 I have seen it slow down just going from 99% to 97%. The key is that you have to be at the absolute maximum discharge rate for it to slow down at high SOCs. If you are at lower max discharge rates then battery SOC won’t matter but you also won’t be anywhere near as fast as the car can go.
