    An example of what I love about Sanderson: Here's a death rattle from Way of Kings (Note: the chapter when Shallan and Kaladin emerge from the chasms is named "True Glory")
    “They come from the pit, two dead men, a heart in their hands, and I know that I have seen true glory.” -Kakashah 1173, 13 seconds pre-death. A rickshaw puller.

    So with Jasnah's resurrection, where Shallan says "you could stab me and I would probably survive", I always read that as when Jasnah "died", she didn't know about how their powers worked properly. She started learning about how Stormlight and stuff works as the book went on. By the time she says that, she's not thinking consciously about Jasnah, and so it doesn't occur to her to doubt it. When Jasnah is first "killed", she completely believes that Jasnah is dead because she doesn't understand the scope of their powers, but by the time she realizes how much power she has, she's not thinking enough about Jasnah to doubt whether Jasnah really died.

    The thing with the blade catch is that it is harder to do for normal people, but stormlight increases speed and reaction, so it should be much easier for Kal to do than a normal soldier.
    I guess Jasnah's original "death" included her vanishing in front of Shallan's eyes. What we don't know is how Shallan reacted to that in the original draft that made the Betareaders think it was too obvious that she wasn't dead and Shallan didn't notice that, but I agree that with the proper reaction on Shallan's part it probably would have been better. Like "That was weird and I have no clue what was going on there, but I can't tell her parents that her daughter vanished into thin air, maybe she soulcast herself? But why?" etc.

    To add onto the Jasnah death scene not being as originally intended: at first, Sanderson didn't _want_ to kill and resurrect her, because he didn't want to use that trope, but the book was just refusing to come together well with Jasnah present (you mentioned in the video some ways it'd be different), so he ended up going with killing her because he just NEEDED to get her out for a while.

    • @curtweston2156
      @curtweston2156 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      After the Jasnah death scene, when she did not immediately come back, I thought, "Sanderson wants to give Shallan some space to grow and be her own person." Jasnah's presence is just too strong, but she is too good a character to just kill off. Never thought she was dead.

    • @mordirit8727
      @mordirit8727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What I don't understand is why do it with a death, though. We already knew she was "an Elsecaller" by the time she had her fake death, but the image we had of her second surge was completely fuzzy. If the book was so hard to write with Jasnah in it (and Merph was spot on about how true that is), why not just let it be her power? Shallan could see Jasnah disappear, rationalize she used her other power to do that and just keep it to herself.
      "Sorry Dalinar and Navani, the ship sank, I lost track of Jasnah and made it to shore. But she is much more resourceful than I am, I'm sure she'll eventually make her way here, hell I expected to find her here already to be honest" and you can both keep Jasnah from stifling Shallan's growth in the book _and_ avoid pretending she died.

    • @albstare

    One thing that was very touching to me about Shallan was how her desperate need to protect others (similar to Kaladin's) took the form of like, non-magical Lightweaving: setting up her brother with a girlfriend, getting puppies for her slightly psychopathic other brother so he could learn to care for animals, telling funny stories to create the feeling of a happy family: it was creating a beautiful "lie that became true." Yeah it goes too far into annoying coping mechanism territory, but that's also her internal strength and power to heal.

    One thing you guys didnt mention about Jasnah's death is that it was hinted that she didnt really die. When Shallan sees her get stabbed and then goes into her room, its mentioned that as shes crawling she expects to trip over the body but doesnt. Its subtle but indicates that theres more to it than we saw, I remember reading that and wondering if that was supposed to mean she didnt actually die, or at the very least something weird happened.

    Wit is actual perfection, no I am not taking criticism at this time
    Edit: my thing w the fakeout death here is that I’m mixed on it. The trope itself annoys me, although I do like that Shallan has to figure things out herself. I fully agree, though, on how there should’ve been a shadow of a doubt-either in Shallan’s head, or maybe not making her look so dead. I also agree with Sanderson-I don’t like that he went for more shock value than foreshadowing with this one. However... at the same time, if I’d had even a hint more foreshadowing, the scene between Navani and Shallan grieving together would not have hit as hard. And I love that scene. I do wish there was ACTUALLY something to grieve, but I think Sanderson captured a lot of emotion despite me being skeptical about Jasnah (bc so many authors use this trope). In the end, I’m of two minds with it and I honestly feel like there’s no perfect way to do it, and it’s even more imperfect and divisive than most writing, so I’d always prefer for authors to do something else and just avoid that mess altogether.

    59:10 You don't have to worry about video length for me. If it's 10 hours long and it's Cosmere related, I'll put my life on hold to watch the whole thing. 😀

    with regards to jasnah, shallan had just learned from her how to project her image as a distraction to the sailor assassins. Shallan does it, and she makes a comment about how she should be stumbling over jasnahs body in the dark but doesn’t for some reason. So it’s hinted in the chapter that something fishy is going on with her disappearance. Also wish shallan had put those puzzle pieces together and questioned if jasnah was out there somewhere.

    I love so much about this book. So many things made me actually cheer out loud while I was reading.
    My favorites being Kal and Adolin finally becoming friends via the duel storyline and Kal and Shallan’s little buddy-cop journey through the chasms.
    I’m reading through Oathbringer now and just...gah, I wish these didn’t take three years to come out- I’m too invested!

    I agree with your discussion about Shallan calling out Kaladin. He's so good at making character hold to their perspectives with fidelity and yet still be confronted by people and circumstances that challenge them. The chasm scene is a perfect example. Both of them call each other out at times, completely sure of their own rightness, but as the reader you can see that they both make good points.

    The killing at the end is interesting because they could have had a long winded plot to kill him or an assassin but we had two books of him outwit everyone and be two steps ahead but it’s how it happens with anger and violence sometimes unexpected and shocking

    Loved your discussions. I super related to your partner by the way. I also listen to all Sanderson's books and when he said "I haven't actually seen the word" and checked it from your book, it was super relatable.
    I also found it super funny how in the beginning of the videos you weren't too happy with his comments and opinions, but then later in the video you accepted them and welcome them super well =)
