    I have a PU 6’0” 40L wide dim version of the RNF96 and it’s one of my two favorite boards (I’m 6’3” 220lbs). I’d love get a black sheep 38L version someday for my SoCal waves.

    Just bought my third one yesterday and this video came out, sick. I’ve had a couple sizes over the years but I think 5’8 pu is dialed for me. Had two 5’9’s one light speed (light but little too chattery) and another pu picked it up at the end of its life and still flipped it for more than I bought it for!

      Yeah I've had another EPS board (JS Red Baron) and I've found im not a fan of them. too chattery and I don't like how they feel in onshore/choppier conditions. PU just feels so much more dialed/locked in for me. What fins have you been rocking? I've been thinking about getting a RNF96

    it grovels well if you size it on the lower end and get lightspeed, which feels way poppier

    • @questforlefts1080
      @questforlefts1080 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why does sizing it smaller help with groveling?

    • @mattnucc
      @mattnucc 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@questforlefts1080 for a good surfer, a smaller board planes faster so you can generate board speed quickly. smaller rail line also helps do sharp turns in small waves

    Such a solid review. Blacksheep construction seems legit and not priced insane for the durability you get. It’s weird a lot of shops in NJ are not ordering many.

      @@jasonforrest4514 It hit close to home because I graduated in 94. Saw 5’5 (vhs) in 97 and was mesmerized by what these boards and boards similar are capable of. Also , it’s great to see us dudes in our 40’s still fighting the fight to stay progressive in our surfing. 🤙🏼

    Sweet review, how much does Jason weigh on 28.5L?

  • @hoseaesp6309

    the upsizing advice is critical. I made the mistake going with a 5'9 33L and although the board was amazing, water would flood the deck on my turns. I went with the larger board cause I thought it would be more forgiving as I am an intermediate but a year later I got the 5'6 29.5 which is my litre on a shortboard although at the lowest range. the 5'6 is way better, just never thought at my surf level i would try to ride something which i consider to be really short.

    How does this board compare to the MR Cali Twin Pin and the Retro Tripper? Jason mentioned he has a Retro Tripper, which he sized up. How would you rank them in terms of lower end, softer waves and top end, punchier surf?
    I have an RNF 96, unfortunately I oversized it. I really like the board however as you mentioned the extra foam does get in the way of the board's performance. Thinking of either reordering it smaller or going with one of these other two.

    • @REALWatersports
      @REALWatersports  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I have a bunch of experience on the MR Cali Twin. Hands down one of the best boards Matt ever made for me. Often people think it’s a “retro” board because it’s a collab with Mark Richards. Couldn’t be further from the truth. Very performance oriented and has a huge loyal following. This board has an edge in smaller waves compared to RNF 96 and Retro Tripper as they are true all arounders, where the Cali Twin was designed to specialize in small to medium surf. So if you’re looking for a one and done go RNF 96 or Retro Tripper. If you already have a board for good waves and you’re looking to fill the slot with a board that has impressive small wave game, definitely check out the Cali Twin.
      Hope this input helps with your decision! - Trip

    You guys mention this isn’t a board to oversize, I’m about Jason’s height and weight 5’9, 160. Would getting the 5’6 be sizing up too much?

    • @jasonforrest4514
      @jasonforrest4514 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depends - how does that compare to the other boards in your quiver? For me, it was right at my "shortboard" volume and was right for me. At that size and weight, I would not go above the 5'6" but think you'd be OK on the 5'6" if it's similar to your other boards

    Got this board in 5'9 and 5'8 and It's the bomb. would disagree on the "don't oversize it", the bigger one is thicker and feels larger on hollow waves sure, but it's still super responsive given it's in lightspeed (eps) and let's be honest 5'9 is still a relatively short board xD. Those 2 ride different though, the big one grovels, the smaller I keep for punchier days.
