I signed an Admin deal as I'm the Publisher rights holder while TuneCore is just my Administrator that administers the rights to register and license my compositions, that collects my Publishing revenue streams. I'm basically a self Publisher. I don't mess with Co-Pub deals as alot people get screwed over into those deals esp with a Major Publisher such as UMGP or Sony/ATV. They generally would offer you a 6 figure advance essentially a massive bank loan plus 25% interest of the Publisher Share as you have to pay all that back via recoupment. No royalties are paid out until all advances has been recouped which could be a $250,000 loan. The Major Publisher also charges a hidden Administrative fee as well as you are basically getting raped by these major publishers. Many times you may not break past the recoupment if you're not coming up and may never see any of that back end money. Best to stay independent. Grammy award winning Producer/Writer StreetRunner switched to Kobalt after he was getting raped in his major Co-Pub deal for 8 years!
thanks for that info. quest? can a publisher be a producer as well? example, suppose a publisher wants to do a deal with a writer that has written the lyrics, and the publisher has produced the music but still wants to publish the product. Is this possible and if so what kind of split would there be with it?
A Publisher is a copyrights holder. You as the Songwriter or the Publisher can be the rights holder. Record Producer's that Co-Writes the Music like B. Cox, Pharrell, Scott Storch that's wearing two hats as a Producer/Songwriter can own thier own Publishing or give up part of thier Publishing such as in a Co-Pub deal in exchange for pitching your tracks for placements deals. I co-wrote a song with an artist in my group. I produced the record , I also wrote and sing the chorus while he is only on the verses. He is spending a lot of money trying to promote the record, how do we split copyright/publishing?
g a honestly you all should've figured that out before the record was mechanically created. You and the artist should've brought all of your final ideas and lyrics to the table and then determined who get what percentage of of the record. If you co wrote the song, made the beat and sing the chorus then you deserve the biggest share of the record. If I was you I'll tell him to stop promoting the record until further notice so you all can determine split of the song and then fill out a split sheet then register it with ascap or BMI or sesac. Hope that helps.

funny every artist, writer, producer talks about publishing, yet it's the first thing they try to take from you, or take from you, when you sign a contract. Interesting, yet shady. I think it's best to get into a contract when you're not desperate and ur mind's clear. When you're thirsty and desperate, you'll sign away everything. Phuck that. I want to get royalties and publishing checks 50 years from now or have my grand kids on easy street just like these folks.

at what point does he stop talking about himself and actually talk humbly and give real advice?
Dude, props on all your success but, hot damn, you don't start talking music publishing until 6:18.
