A similar thing happened on day I was driving. Two dogs ran onto the highway. 100 cars were all breaking, many stopped completely, and many turned on hazard lights. One woman didn't even slow down. She went around everyone in the left break down lane doing about 70. She hit the two dogs killing them both instantly. Then she pulls over and starts crying. If the entire highway is slamming on their breaks, maybe you should too. Not get annoyed because you are in a hurry to go shopping and accelerate around. There might be a reason everyone else is stopping.

I hit a ladder on the 405 once, nobody hit there hazard lights. The person in front of me hit it and changed the angle of the ladder, and I was not able to swerve because there were cars on both side. I made a quick decision to take the hit and I aimed the right tires for the center rungs of the ladder, as the ladder had become perpendicular to me. I went directly over the middle rings crushing all of them. Surprisingly the tires were fine and I had a small scratch on the plastic underneath the car that nobody can see. Somehow got away with no consequences

    • @kyleknight9686

Similar incident to me on beltway 8 in Houston a year ago - some genius left a spare tire, rim and all, laying flat on the middle of the tollway; car ahead of me swerved and in fairness I should have left more following distance. I had .5 seconds to see the tire, check my left side, and swerve left so that it made contact with my right tire - loud pop, slight swerve, but was able to limp to the shoulder. Grateful I didn't flip, and grateful it only cost me a tire. Surprisingly no body damage or axle damage. My lesson was learned in making sure you leave a car or more of a gap in front of you. Could have been a lot worse. Still furious at the idiot who either didn't realize they dropped the spare or watched it drop off and shrugged their shoulders.

In Australia on a highway I once saw a 4x4 in front of me with the back right tire looking "suspicious" all of a sudden, like "flapping". Instinctively, I slowed down, put on the hazard lights, and sure enough, the tire burst. Luckily the highway had a middle grassy area as they sometimes do in Australia, with no guardrail, so the guy quickly went right and stopped safely there. Later I pulled off to refuel at a petrol station and a lady behind me thanked me, apparently she was behind me when the tire burst. She told me she'd never have stopped in time in my situation.

I remember the worst tailgating I experienced was a combination of her, plus some horrendous luck.
I was winding down a narrow two-lane that went on forever trying to meet my mom in her new house.
Endless hills, swerves and bends that combined with the view of the tailgater whizzing past my rear view to make me so nauseous.
I try to lose her by turning onto one of the side streets, all equally small, long and swirvy, to my dismay,
and she turns right along with me every time, tailgating the whole way.
After only several minutes of this drug-trip of a ride, I simply can't take it anymore, and pull up to the next house to let her pass.
(Laughter) It was HER house. I quickly learn this when I see her TAILGATING me right into HER own driveway! (bad idea, I guess?) She leaps from her car and starts yelling at me, "What are you DOING ?!??"

@BigTestes At highway speeds, you're supposed to maintain a three-second or four car length distance between yourself and the leading vehicle. The following vehicle was barely two car lengths away and got even closer when the leading vehicle signaled a hazard. The very fact that they already have front end damage to their car and were following too closely to react in time to an unexpected hazard in the road, clearly shows that they have issues with tailgating.

Don't tailgate, ever. You need at least one car length for every 10 miles an hour you're driving at in order to have a reasonable chance of stopping in an emergency without hitting the car in front you. One time someone was tailgating me at night, and I pulled over on the side of the road to let them pass because it was too annoying. As I pulled over, they actually followed me and came to a complete stop behind me, before realizing what happened and screeching away. Can you imagine not paying attention to that extent?? Tailgaters are usually doing it because they think they can rely on the peripheral view of the car ahead of them while they look down at their cell phone or something. That or they have a personality disorder which prevents them from behaving rationally. Only very stupid, screwed up people do it. Everyone else can grasp the basic concept of allowing several car lengths between yourself and other vehicles. When I find out someone habitually tailgates, I lose all respect for that person. They probably also drink and drive. You can't trust their judgment, so keep them at a distance, out of your life.

This is one of my complaints about modern drivers education. They spend so much time talking about the dangers of alcohol consumption and spend almost no time talking about the actual dangers of driving a 2000 lb+ land missle on a road with other vehicles. Not once in drivers ed did I hear "if you pass a semi do it as quickly as possible and try not to linger next to them because if they blow a tire (fairly common) it is like a bomb that explodes and throws a lot of debris in every direction. It will be loud, unexpected, scary as hell, and very difficult to properly react to, no matter how skilled of a driver you are and no matter how sober you are" or " the front axel of a car can snap unexpectedly, instantly causing a loss of control if not flipping and rolling while throwing debris" or "a tire can throw a rock at your windshield, shattering it, faster than you can blink" or "in heavy traffic one tailgater can create a multiple hour traffic jam across a 4 lane highway just by being to close and and having to overreact by breaking hard" ...
But they spent two weeks telling me if I saw a can of beer and and a car in the same day I will drop dead instantly

This is facts right here. I just finished driver's ed and they basically told me how much I can drink while still being able to drive. They also guilt tripped me almost every unit with a story of some kid dying cause some other kid or kids were being stupid. Maybe instead of teaching kids that being stupid will get them killed, driver's ed should teach them either how to not get killed if they do something stupid or the exact process following the car (as in explaining that the car with do a flip and send debris everywhere) that will get them killed if they still want to scare people.

      @dinohall2595 2 ปีที่แล้ว +119

@@Boogly83 No one can truly multi-task. The human brain can only focus on one task at a time. That's why I say "multi-tasking" as you are just switching your focus from one task to the next. Because of this, its no wonder about 1 in 88 people are either killed or seriously injured by a car at some point.
It's not merely about having the skills to drive, but the skills to drive almost perfectly. The consequences are uniquely high for the typical margin of error, and confounding variables like emotion and health can impair driving ability at relative random.
It's unfortunate we live in a society where driving is more or less a necessity since public transportation only provides limited access. This is why self-driving cars are something the world needs.

Assume 25 MPH which is a school zone and typically the slowest you'll encounter on public roads. Your 10% rule says you can go 27.5 MPH. If you were going 10 over and following the "10% rule" then you'd be in a zone rated for 100 MPH !!!
The rule you're stating isn't correct. Either way folks, don't speed. Those limits were chosen not only for road conditions but visibility of turns and intersections. More thought went into determining those limits than any one of use would use at that moment driving down the road.

I remember seeing a manhole cover that was partially off of the manhole. I pulled over, stopped, turned on my Hazards and started walking towards it (side street with parking on both sides so plenty of room and little traffic). The edge of the manhole was about 12" (~30cm) on my side of the centerline. One guy slowed down when he saw my car with the Hazards flashing and when I signaled him to stop he did so, and when the oncoming car coming from the other direction passed he went over to that side of the road to safely pass the hazard.
Then came the idiot! Ignored my car's hazards, caused me to take 3 or 4 quick steps towards the curb, gave me the middle finger salute as he sped up.... The manhole cover flipped a bit damaging the bottom of his radiator and oil pan (judging by the colors of what liquids were leaking onto the road!!) and when his drivers side front tire hit the far side of the manhole it popped with a very loud bang!!!
The guy got out of his car with an angry & astonished look on his face, turn to glare at me... I just looked him in the eye and shrugged, walked over to where the cover now rested and then pushed it back so it properly was on the manhole, walked back to my car and drove off! All this time he had a WTF!!! look on his face and neither of us said a word to each other!
This was about 15 years before cell phones were even around, and a number of decades before they became common. Don't know how long it was before he got help, and truthfully, I don't care!!!

It is amazing how much people insist on ignoring a warning. My latest was a deer hit. The deer had ran into the side of a ladies car. The deer's hind quarters had been disabled by the impact, and was in the road unable to move. The lady who's car it had ran into was standing by the road's edge in shock. She kept waking back out on the road, and I would escort her back off because of traffic. I was wanting to pull the deer off the road, but flagging oncoming traffic and keeping the lady off the road prevented me from doing it. Two different oncoming cars ran right over the deer, with the second one finally killing it. The second car had a little surprise though. Half of the deer must of gotten stuck in the undercarriage of his car, because only half the deer remained on the road. A buddy of mine works for the Department of Roads, and he was sent out to pick it up, but only found the half left where I had dragged to to the edge of the road. He drove a couple of miles down the road looking for the rest of it, but never found it. I bet that was a nice mess.

Well the bible says no man is good, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So how do we get to heaven? Answer: By believing on Jesus Christ who took the punishment for our sin on the cross. There are no amount of good works we can do to achieve salvation because salvation is a free gift of God. We need to humble ourselves, realize we are sinners and that we need a savior.

576575s you can't at my highschool 9/10 have damage and they actually try to hit some of the cars that don't like mine. I'm not like richer than them I drive a trailblazer, they just trashed their car and don't like other people having nicer ones. I've seen people legitimately push people in traffic.

It always baffles me how people will tailgate you as if you're supposed to magically speed through the 27 other cars directly in front of you in that lane that are all going the same speed in rush hour traffic.

This made my day. Thank you!
But... The line at the end was incorrect: Not, "if you see hazard lights, don't tailgate." The ONLY thing needed to say is, "DON'T tailgate." This is only ONE good example of why it's idiotic to tailgate.

Props to the black truck that launched the ladder knowing it would land in the next lane, knowing the buick would ride over, and knowing to aim it perfectly so it hit the tailgater’s wheel.

You took some good steps in that situation, but the car behind took even more steps.
