    Went here 2 years ago with my brother and my dad. We did a roadtrip across western America. THIS is the highlight of our trip. I reccomend EVERYBODY to go here before you leave this world. The video dosent do justice to the incredible adventure it truly was.

    I hiked the narrows with my older brother and dad when I was 11 back in 2012. My brother passed away a year later but that day is one I will never forget as long as I live. Truly the best day of my life. Hope to go back with my dad again some day.

      I know exactly how you feel. I've hiked the narrows numerous times, but last August I was able to take my dad (whose health was failing) a short distance into the Narrows. He passed away a few weeks ago.
      The memories that were made that day will forever bless my life.
      Thank you for sharing your experience! Wild Spaces are more than pretty vistas, or natural curiosities. Millions of people have forged precious connections with each other and the natural world in these spectacular wonderlands. The Narrows, like Zion is a landscape of memories for me.
      For that reason I wan't it respected and preserved forever.

    I’m hiking this tomorrow, i was getting a little scared, people make a really big deal about the current but this helped me see that it’s nothing to worry about!!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces

      Best of luck! Make sure to check flow rate and weather with the park service. Water level changes, and it's not a good idea to enter the narrows if there's a significant chance of flooding.
      The park service keeps close tabs on it. Have fun! Be safe. And Leave No Trace.

      We very much agree. Anyone who is physically and financially able, AND can visit responsibility should attempt at least some portion of the Narrows at some point in their life.
      This is a special trail.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The whole length is roughly 15 miles from top to bottom. You'll need a permit for that route. Without a permit, the hike can be up to 10 miles. 5 miles up, 5 miles down. Conditions vary by the day and the season. We recorded this footage in July, but conditions change. Make sure to check with the park service regarding conditions including temperature, flow rate and weather.
      Any closed toe durable shoe will do. Ankle support is recommended. Just make sure you're ok getting wet.
      Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We went in mid July. The earlier you can start the better. Zion is so popular now, the only way to beat the crowds is by getting started before everyone else.
      Best of luck on your hike! The Narrows are spectacular. Remember to be safe and Leave No Trace.

      We totally agree. There's no place like the Zion Narrows and, yes, the first mile or so can be very, very crowded. Probably a correlation :) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!! We hope you also consider subscribing. There's lots of good stuff still to come.

    Beautiful footage, thank you! Will be visiting in June and am curious, how far did you hike in? We are planning just a day trip - 8 to 10 miles total. Will we see what's captured here?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We traveled roughly 5 miles up from Temple of Sinawava, 10ish miles (the maximum distance allowed without a permit).
      Sounds like you’ll be traveling a similar distance so this is a good representation of what you’ll see.
      June should be beautiful. The water can still be quite cold and swift. It’s always best to check with the Park Service before entering the river.
      Also, please Leave No Trace. This is an astoundingly popular trail. Visitor should take ever precaution to minimize their impact.
      Best wishes! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!

  • @jdmcnugentjosh7
    @jdmcnugentjosh7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video! If you decide to do the top-bottom day hike (permit required), do you park at The Temple of Sinawava and shuttle to Chamberlain Ranch to begin?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!!! Hope you'll check out our other videos.
      We'd suggest asking the park if you can park your car at the visitor center. Then shuttle to Chamberlain Ranch, unless you begin your hike before the shuttle system is running. Private cars are prohibited past the Mount Carmel junction during the busy season, from mid-late March to October or November meaning you won't be able to park at Temple of Sinawava during those months.
      Once you've completed the hike, take the shuttle from Temple of Sinawava back to the visitor center and your car. Hope that's helpful!

  • @krazycarlos7
    @krazycarlos7 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How long is the hike? How many miles and time?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. If you hike the full length of the Narrows it's about 15 miles and takes all day. If you hike from Temple of Sinawava on the southern end, you are only permitted to go as far as big spring roughy 5 miles from Temple of Sinawava (ten miles total). But as an out and back hike you can turn around at any time making it easy to time you hike.
      Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

  • @nancyho9950
    @nancyho9950 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    HI , I plan to hike the Narrows but just the river , do I need a permit ? Thank you

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Permits are required if hiking “from the top, down” or from Chamberlain Ranch to Temple of Sinawava. Or if hiking past Big Spring (5 miles north of Temple of Sinawava). Other than that no permit is required.
      Hope that is helpful! Remember to pack out everything you take in (human waste included), Leave No Trace, and check weather and flood conditions with he park service before entering the Narrrows.

  • @emilyhines7387
    @emilyhines7387 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What time of year was this? Is September a good time of year for low water flow and warmth?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video was shot in mid July. There are a number of good times to hike the Narrows. Summer can be nice, but is also more prone to flooding than the other months. We've personally never hiked the Narrows in September, but we've heard that generally speaking the water level is lower and the crowds smaller. Smaller crowds are as good of a reason as any to try hiking the Narrows in Fall.
      Whenever you do hike the Narrows, make sure to contact the national park service in advance and check both the flow rate and flash flood advisory. Also make sure to check the water temperature, it can get cold in the Narrows. Have fun, be safe and Leave No Trace. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

  • @NancyCoster
    @NancyCoster 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's what scares me: Flashflood potential...! But The Narrows looks beautiful and I would love to come back to zion and do that trail. I did 4 other ones and those were beautiful too.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zion is one of our favorite Wild Spaces. Flash floods are always a possibility, but there's a lot you can do to keep yourself safe. If you check with the information desk in the visitor center they can inform you of any storm or flood advisories. Other than that stay aware of floating debris, clouds overhead or a sudden change of clarity of the water. Also make sure to check doppler radar and beware of potential storm systems to the north.
      For the most part the Narrows are perfectly safe if you prepare. If weather conditions suggest a higher probability of flash floods, then as you've discovered there are other beautiful trails to enjoy. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!

    Awesome video. Can we camera geek out? What gear did you bring to shoot this? How did you keep it dry? Use a stabilizer or run a warp in post?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! We used two cameras. A go pro hero 3+ black and a canon sx40 hs. We have a small steady rig for the go pro and a tripod for the canon. It's a fair bit to carry, but it gets the job done. As far as keeping them dry, we just watch our step and do our best to keep them clear of water.

    Are the hikes long and scary(due to narrow trials)?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zion has hikes for pretty much everybody. There are the more demanding trails like observation point, the full Zion Narrows and so on, but there also easy trails like the riverside walk and Pa‘rus Trail.
      We’d suggest spending some time on Zion’s official website looking at the various trails and determine what would be best for you.

      It's called the Zion Narrows. The trailhead begins at the Temple of Sinawava shuttle stop in Zion Canyon. The first mile is paved and is called the Riverside Walk before entering the Narrows. Hope you have fun. Stay safe and Leave No Trace.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces

      Without a permit, hikers are permitted 5 miles up (10 miles out and back) the Narrows until Big Spring. Do not travel further without permit. We were on the trail for several hours.
      Hope that answers your question.

    Great video! Is there a single trail to the Angels Landing as well as The Narrows? Where is the closes spot to park the car to start the hike? Thank you!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are technically multiple access points for both Angels Landing and the Narrows, but they're more demanding and/or can also come with more red tape. Angels Landing is accessible via the West Rim Trail (much longer) as well as the Grotto in Zion Canyon (The most popular route).
      The Narrows can be accessed via Chamberlin Ranch (requires a permit and additional transportation planning) on the northeast side of the park or via the Riverside walk near the Temple of Sinawava. You can also access the Narrows using a number of canyoneering routes, but these require canyoneering skills and climbing equipment.
      Hope hat helps.
