23-year-old Jake Hope is still on the job hunt after 400 unsuccessful applications in the last two years. We’ve been told that unemployment in the UK is the lowest it's been for over 40 years - and so you'd think that young and able people should easily find plenty of work. So what’s gone wrong? And can we help him? He joins us from his home in Bristol.

Its harder than ever to get a job even in 2023 don't listen to what the government and news says .its really hard
There’s barely anything suitable coming up in my area and I’m not being particularly picky. Had two interviews this year from a couple of hundred applications. The whole time I’ve been out of work, I’ve been studying and volunteering and employers seem to actually hold that against me at interview.
I feel your pain but don’t give up
It is really hard I never had a problem finding a job I even lowered my standards an applied for fast food jobs and they say I’m over qualified I get interviewed but it doesn’t lead to being hired 😒 it’s bee n 2 years no luck
the best thing to do is an apprenticeship
Especially with A.I. beginning to evolve which, when realised further down the track, will wipe out more jobs!
It’s been a cold year of 2023 lately
I CAN PROUDLY SAY THAT I HAVE BROKEN HIS RECORD AS I HAVE APPLIED TO OVER 600 JOBS AND STILL DON’T HAVE A JOB. I have changed CVs I have improved everything but still no luck. it started from late 2022 and still up to this day (03/04/2023) I don’t have a job

I got turned down and wasn’t aloud to attend the interview at McDonald’s before because of the shoes I was wearing (which were all black Nike shoes), and the worst thing is the woman who told me they won’t interview me had a set of gold teeth on both rows of teeth but somehow my shoes aren’t acceptable lol
Managers at fast food restaurants and hospitality are among the most hypocritical people on the planet, I've witnessed them mess up my orders when they try to look clever on the shop floor.
You should of turned up in the a big red pair of Ronald Mcdonald shoes.

Honestly same ive been unemployed for 7 months now , its soo hard to get a job
I feel rest assured that I'm not alone and that one day it'll become so apparent that many people are out of work that the system will have to change.

sometimes your place shuts down, happened to me again on 28/12/23...3rd time. No payout again.
The fact that we need "Career Coaches" tells me that the hiring process has been taken over by self aggrandizing academics in HR.
I'd like to hear an update on Jake, find out where he is now and if the career coach helped him immensely.

The way young Boomers had their interview:
"You can start on Monday".
The same people, in their 50s/60s, when interviewing Millenials and Gen Z today:
"We're looking for someone multi skilled and vastly experienced for this entry level job position.... we wish you good luck in your search!"
Boomers with 2.2s are company heads, but theyre asking for a 1st degree and masters just for an entry level job... its insane

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?" - That question is so outdated yet they still ask it.

I have been job hunting for almost 4 years...i cant reach anywhere outside my town either because of my jeep breaking down from the lack of money. Im willing to work hard, no criminal record, no drugs, and only 2 months of retail experience...i might just give up on life soon because i cant take this stress anymore..(p.s. i feel tje guy giving an offer to that guy is bs)

I am at around 200 atm in the IT industry where my qualification is, recent one was met with "sorry this program will be only for women applicants to increase women in IT jobs", UK what happened to no discrimination.

Because "due to the vast number of applicants" they are unable to provide specific feedback for each while we have to keep applying for a "vast amount of jobs" weekly.

Every day I search for work and an agency also searches for me. The amount of rejections I get even with all my experience…. I feel very hopeless in this world. I have $4 to my bank account. Just is what it is, I guess. It’s tough out there. I went to a seasonal Toys R Us hiring event and there was 5 line ups that went out the door. 1000’s of people looking for work and my resume probably doesn’t even get read.

Only 400 applications? when I made my last career move, I must have applied for over 1000 jobs. I mean let's face it, it's about over-population, scared managers frightened of losing their jobs, companies going bust, ageism/over qualification and deselection prejudice. So we have a 23 year boy that's done nothing career-wise yet, who's been selected media-wise because it's 'cool' and represents the young up and coming generation, but apart from that, why is this news, when this old, old unemployment stuff is as old as dirt.
It's not what you know, it's who you know
So if your family is not well connected or in the system already, all that education and homework has done nothing for your skills in long term. The really ought to stress this in schools to parents.

Statistics don’t take into account people like me. My bf lives with me we go halves on bills. His savings mean I can’t claim any benefits. I don’t know what he has in his bank he wants equality . He’s paying for my food that’s it. I have 1 month savings left . Have to ask him to leave so I can claim benefits to pay bills. I’ve been looking for a job for 4 years. Overqualified or too old. My life is 😭 😭

Remember government making immigration laws tougher so they have to be better skilled/be applying for higher paid jobs. That’s where the jobs are going. Seems to rise want British people working the low paid jobs and foreigners working the high paid jobs.
I worked shifts in a hospital with an agency, all of a sudden they have taken on loads of woman and ive been pushed out. Thats reality
They harsh reality is all they want to be is diverse and they don't want to hire men especially white men
The problem im having is everytime I try and sign in to any online sites to apply for a job, it keeps rejecting my current password, claiming that it's invalid. When I try and change my password it sends me a 6 digit code via text message and when I type that code in to reset my password, that also gets rejected. What should I do?? Job hunting was much more easier back in the 80's, 90's and early 00's
Yep, no job agencies back then that the company advertised through, plus companies did actually keep your CV in their drawer/ document rack if you sent it in or were an unsuccessful applicant.
Whereas now, they keep things digitally and your records are either deleted or lost under piles of emails. My dad said he doesn't think he'd have gotten his 30 year long job if Indeed and these other sites had existed back then, since the company actually got back to him a month after an intial interview about a different, but similar, job they had coming up and allowed him to interview first and offered it to him on the spot from how well his last interview went.

I feel job agencies want to 'help you find work' rather than 'getting you into a job', there's definetly a difference between the two. They just get paid to keep applicant numbers on their system to show how many people they're 'helping'!

Same here 2.5 years experience as IT manager and applied for 200 jobs still no interview everyday receiving emails sorry on this occasion we are not moving forward with your application 😁 and there is no mistake in my cv

I've got a 2:1 in economics from a top 10 russell group uni and ive been unemployed for the last 3 years...
I can hand on heart tell you I've applied for over 2,000 jobs in the last 3 years and had 3 interviews...
One from poundland, one from a warehouse job and one from amazon...

I’m struggling right now same with my friend but he likes night shift I line in poole Canford heath looking for retail.
In wales i applied for Welsh water in February of this year went to the first Interview in the May time and everything went well. 2 weeks later they asked me to come back for a Final Interview on June 16th and i heard nothing until the Start of September saying.

I mean the wording didn’t sit with me well at all it sounds like to me they have pulled the plug on these jobs for some reason. If you have failed the interview i’m sure they always say “ Unfortunately but you are unsuccessful at this time “
Yeah it's even worse now as some people have mentioned. I have applied for just over 500 jobs(non entertainment jobs let's specify. I've done random voice work to keep my busy but even that is far between) and I've only had two interviews. And then I keep seeing the same job posting from the same company week after week and then when I ask they claim they are not hiring. Since the last three years the big probis that we lost a lot of our visa workers which is exactly what people want as a company; because those people can be taken advantage of. That's one of the biggest issues. And the biggest now issues come from tech where we no longer need in person staff to do a job but computers. And those jobs aren't replaced. Like self checkouts.

The male liberal host acts like he doesn’t know what’s going on. He’s a white, British male UK citizen that carries himself well so that could currently be the reason. If that guy can’t a job at Pizza Hut, that means there’s something wrong with the system.
Exactly. And over 600k migrants entered the U.K. in 2023. It’s obvious what is going on.

Wanna know what's really fun, I don't even have any ways of paying rent and behind on my court cost for madgestrate pro. 6 months behind. Probably will be a warrant within a week or two month... Anything else you want to know. my life sucks. I dedicated my life to a false cause and pp ure lies for the last 4 years to a point where u threatened me leaving and going thinking and family relationship with my real family.
