When he speaks about the male/female principle in regards to herding/agriculture, I find this is (given available evidence) empirically wrong. Agriculture gave rise to more patriarchal societies, as women would before gather as much or even more than men could hunt (wealth accumulation and inheritance makes control of the wife's virginity crucial as well). As to how central or equal were women before that, evidence so far is not clear, but Jung seems to have been a bit quick in establishing the "female goddess/mother goddess" centrality withouth sufficient proof. I'm open to criticism, again just trying to get the empirical truth here.
I think he's referring to the earliest agricultural societies, especially in contrast to the proto-herding cultures adjacent to them. To my understanding, the theory goes something like one branch of these herders (often referred to as the kurgan folk) were warlike, sky-god worshippers and subjugated their earth goddess-worshipping proto-agricultural neighbors, integrating and hybridizing their mythologies giving rise to the modern male deity agricultural societies.
You're viewing what he's saying through a Western equality/feminist lens, not an anthropological/mythological/psychological lens. The two may be related but I think you missed his point, which is about the structure of the myths of societies and how they correlate to the economic base of sustenance. You can see an example of both mythological structures in modern society that support what he is saying...environmentalism is earth-centered/worship, matriarchal, and many of its adherents are even vegetarians, while those that raise animals for slaughter such as cattlemen in the West are more prone to patriarchal mythic structures, mainly traditional Christianity.
Sugarsail1 Im not making a political statement, but an empirical, historical statement. I'm fairly confident that given avalaible evidence in the historical social sciences, what he says about "what happened" (what actually happened) in the development of mythic structures is wrong, as was what Jung said about there being a movement from the mother goddess to a more patriarchal God. Same goes for agriculture relating to patriachy, it's not a value judgement, its an empirical matter relating to the social development of the species.
Francesco Gissi Díaz Youre wrong. Indo-European and semitic cultures were indeed much more warrior like and patriarchal than the agricultural societies. There is no dispute over this.
WindyFellow I was talking of the movement from pre-agricultural, hunter gatherer societies to agricultural societies, and that such movement increased patriarchy, which I believe to be a well substantiated statement. I don't recall mentioning indo-european or semitic cultures, but those were by any measure agricultural societies.
You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Civilisation first began in ancient Mesopotamia, not Egypt. And the origins of the word "cherub" are from the Hebrew word "kĕrūbh".
I disagree with some of his facts. There is no such thing as civilization until ancient egyptians came on the scene. The arabs never had one. I should said the semites. It was when narmer when into the north east africa which is call the middle east. He brought civilization with him and deities. The semites copied their deities off ancient africans. Egypt was the first great real civilization and it lasted for 3k yrs.

You really did read into that whatever you wanted didn't you? -- Christianity, or any religion by the way, does inform it's art, architecture, values, holidays, rites language and the like so it's not a bad assessment to put it the way Campbell did; no it's not aliens dude.
Oh dear, your comment is too darn long i simply cannot spend precious time reading it. Go pester someone else boy.
Because textbooks are all written by one person
fortunately NOT you , dopey
You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Civilisation first began in ancient Mesopotamia, not Egypt. And the origins of the word "cherub" are from the Hebrew word "kĕrūbh".
Go Vegan!
'vegans' are elitest specieist bigots who take 'satisfaction' in the raising & reaping then 'harvesting' of sentient plants
WHO FEEL PAIN TOO !!!
