    Something I saw on an old comment or forum, is to tin the cable with a small amount of solder. Referring to where the cable plugs into the headphone speaker, there's two pins, adding a small amount of solder will make the pins slightly thicker and have a better connection to the spring in the driver. I've tried it and haven't had a problem since.

      That is a clever idea.

    Fantastic, my HD25 II work now as a charm again.... but it made me cry on the 2 previous pairs that had the same issue that I threw away! I play drums with them and sweat, usually problem is happening after 3 or 4 years. Thanks again! And shame on Sennheiser for not solving a blatant design failure.

    Watching this on my 10 year-old HD 25s that've had a loose connection for 5 of those. So annoying, yet so simple to fix...literally just in and out 5 times each side. Can't believe it. Thank you!

    Dude I've been through 3 cables and finally decided it was the connection. Came here to learn how to crack this sucker open and then you said unplug it and plug it in a few times. I pessimistically gave it a try just to rule it out and I'll be damned - I no longer get any connection issues (normally if I nudge it slightly it dies in my right ear). Thank you for making a small yet significant impact on my day - I can now get back to work!

    you should be knighted for this! like you said, its pretty wild that the bottleneck on this otherwisely indestructible headphone is so ridiculously small. i never would've thought that just removing it and putting it back a few times would fix it, but you made a really great effort at explaining exactly why the connection is failing. might sound ridiculous but i feel extremely empowered to know this and look forward to sharing it with all my buddies who have the exxact same issue. bless!

    After literally years of having to firkle the right hand cable to make a not-very-good connection I just pulled out the plug, sprayed in some contact cleaner and put it back and they now work perfectly! Ta very much for the tips.

    Thank you so much! I thought my headphones were screwed, but all it took was a simple unplug and replug of the cable and they're as good as new! I Didn't even have to take them apart :D
    Just a note for others trying this: Mine took a lot (and I mean A LOT) of force to unplug, just keep persevering and it will pop out eventually.

    I have a 16 yo pair of HD 25s that I listened to less and less because of this issue with the right channel. I deoxy sprayed and adjusted springs on both sides for good measure and they sound terrific. With a pair of much-needed new headband pads they'll be like new. Thanks so much, Jason!

    Great video thanks. I have the cheapy sennheiser hd 25-sp ii, which are put together largely the same way. They cut out on both side, but don't have the removable pins. I once took them apart to have a look, put them together again and they worked fine again ... for a while. Watched you video and just tried more forcefully wiggling the lead heads in the ear pieces for a while, in the hope this might abrade and clean the contacts a bit. Working great again, so far! If they misbehave again, I now know I can get in there with some contact cleaner to have another go. Thanks again, really helpful.

  • @YourHoss
    @YourHoss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Replugging it did the trick, I wasn't even sure these things came out until seeing this, they were in so tight. For others: try using needle nose pliers, grip it so the tip of the pliers points into the headphone (grip the connector and the stress relief part of the cable).

    Thanks for the video as always. Actually another trick works for me, first pull the edge of a cotton swab ever so gently then twist it so that 1) the tip becomes small enough 2) long enough for the insertion into the hole(patience required). Upon so give it a few turns in the hole to clean it up. I have repeated the process by wetting the same cotton swab with rubbing alcohol repeating the same process. So far this has worked wonders. Cheers

    Nice. I discovered this on my own after buying a pricey OEM replacement cable. :) I’m currently using my HD25-1 II’s with the original cables but still periodically need to pull it out and unplug the cable on the left side to make it work. I’ve also tried using a cleaning solution but I find I still need to play with the cable about 20% of the time.
    I may try the pin technique soon. Thx for that suggestion.

    The springs on my new HD-25 came loose after maybe 10 hrs of bedroom dying. The most expensive DJ headphones I bought died the quickest - by far. Considering the built quality, I won't buy a replacement cup if the needle hack doesn't work. Very well made guide though, thanks!

    Brilliant video, followed both your suggestions. Sadly it hasn't worked for me, I'm forever jostling with the left ear connector to fix. I'm then getting paranoid it's not coming through correctly, sometimes sounds like its quieter. Few wiggles later and I can get it back for a short amount of time. I think I may follow the out of warranty repair route. TBF, I haven't got much to complain about. I've had these cans since 2005.

  • @joemarzie
    @joemarzie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    well, I can say the technique of sticking a needle down the sockets and pulling the spring works a charm, but it's entirely down to feel, as there isn't room to see exactly what you're doing. basically stick a skinny needle down the side and gently pull to the side until you feel the slight torque of the spring pulling the needle back. feel free to pull it forward a couple of times til you reckon it's reloaded the spring. that's all there is to it. the proof was in me jiggling both connectors quite roughly whilst listening to music. voila, no crackle! it is a heinous design flaw though for otherwise amazing headphones. grrr...

    Hey Jason, I have a pair of HD 25-SP ii cans. They’re made slightly cheaper than their older sibling. The springs are not separate from the wire terminals and so you cannot avoid breaking that connection. So long as you have a soldering kit, a fine pair of tweezers and a steady hand, you can fix them using this spring method. However, they don’t stay fixed. The problem has returned. What would you advise?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had some success replacing the original springs with the gold springs from the HD600 = they need to be modified slightly as they are the long stem that comes off them is a bit longer than the HD25 ones but they do fit and seem to fix the problem better

    Tried everything in this video. Completely dismantled the ENTIRE cup, swapped the L+R connections, tried the pin thing, made sure the "thinner than a human hair red wires" weren't damaged, unplugged & re-plugged the connection (uncountable times as this is what I was doing before watching the vid), I used a can of compressed air to blow any potential dirt out (very gently), there's nothing I can do apart from go to the shop and buy come electrical spray but I'm in no way putting any eggs in any baskets on that working. One thing I have learnt is that although this model is extremely durable on the outside, the inside is a completely different matter. The dust covers on the cones are like plastic bags, those red wires are a joke, the bend on the cable where it runs over the headband cannot be avoided in splitting on the bend it slots into, the first cable that came with them broke after 3 months, the logo is rubbing off the headband etc etc. I had a pair of mk1's made in Ireland and regret selling them to upgrade to this shit because they lasted me 15 years and the only thing that needed replacing was the cable once in that time. If I could replace the guts of these with something better but keep the body I would in a heartbeat. I'll put money on it I need to replace a cup for no obvious reason once I've tried the contact spray. Typical!

    Great vid by the way. I bought my headphones in 2004 and I must say I love them.
    My left driver is very low in volume. the springs in the driver along with the pins on the the cable look in good nick.
    Ive followed the instructions and also gone further by removing the springs, and not trying to lose a spring and also avoid breaking the aluminium wires, as shown in other videos.
    Alas no avail, do you recommend getting a new cable. Also does it matter if the aluminium wires are touching each other?
    Any feedback would be great

      It could be an issue with the cable - You can pick up a multimeter for a few £ and they are really handy for checking all kinds of things. If you disconnect the cable and use a multimeter to check there is no break in the wire somewhere

    I've had this problem for years. Fixed it once before with disassembly, but the old bugbear has returned.
    I'll try your pin trick.

    Hi Jason! Thanks for the tip! Unplugging and replugging has always worked for me. I am a proud owner of a custom cans cable for 2 years now and it has been fantastic. Quality! However I always end up having problems at the jack connection between the cable and my mp3 player / phone (same problem across devices). My guess is repetitive use has slightly angled or shrunk the (angled) connector so it doesn't fit perfectly, resulting in my sound jumping from stereo to one ear only as I walk and the connector is wiggling in my pocket. Is there a fix for that? Like melting it a bit or wrapping a tin layer of aluminium...? Thanks a lot! Keep up the great work. Subbed :)

    Good tips. This issue plauges a whole line of Sennheiser headphones with the removable cables. If I lean my head left or right I loose one side. Wiggle the plug at the earcup and it comes back. I'll try the pin method and maybe some contact cleaner.
    Question: is there risk of the contact cleaner damaging synthetic bits inside the driver ?

    Great video, but how do you remove the cables? I have to unscrew the thing? It seems like you can unplug them but they're stuck in pretty tightly. Thanks!

      you will have to give them a bit of a wiggle while pulling them out ;)
