Cleft lip and palate can happen together or separately. This affects the patient by affecting their speech. eating, drinking, hearing. This is corrected with surgery. Lip surgery at 3 month. Palate at 12 months. defect can be only in soft or hard palate. cleft palate is more severe than lip as it affects ear by frequent infections. Treatment need interdisciplinary approach. They occur randomly. It does not follow an inheritance pattern but can be more liable if a relative has it . Usually occurs with a syndrome.
A cleft is a gap or split in the upper lip and/or roof of the mouth (palate). It is present from birth. The gap is there because parts of the baby's face did not join together properly during development in the womb. A cleft lip and palate is the most common facial birth defect in the UK, affecting around 1 in every 700 babies.
Who has taught you , repair of cleft lip should be done at 5 -6 months age, please don't upload wrong statements for students, age for cleft lip repair is around 3 months, even we teach this to undergraduate students
Who has taught you , rule of ten in cleft palate, the rule of ten is only for cleft lip, and tell me, you expect same weight ( 10 pounds) for a ten months old child, it is ridiculous
