      Hi thanks for your vid!
      Neat tool!
Question: Can one do the same with Walabot l when it comes down to holding phone apart from device vs holding phone and device together back to back?
So did I ever pick a winmer? Or is it over?

Concerned, that no one has used a wall with insulation and/or plastic vapor barrier. But, I must mention that your review was the best I have seen to date.

Just a thought. When you tried using with everything, other than the first sheet of drywall, did you recalibrate it? Not saying it would work, but it needs calibrated for a reason.

Excellent on all your videos. I do part time handyman work and installed many TV’s with one stud finder. Drilling in the correct place is crucial and must be correct all the time. This is very precise and would be very helpful to have. You have taught me many things I have never seen on other videos. Thanks for doing this for all us diy’rs and fixer uppers. Keep on giving your best.

Ever tried it on the old style lath & plaster walls? The whole wall must show as a stud right?

You're going to need to do a showdown between all your stud finders soon! You should make a test piece of 1/2 and 3/4 drywall with mud, primer and paint.

  • @IntervaliaStudios
    @IntervaliaStudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I feel like it's more concerning that it didn't pick up the electrical wires inside the house. Just a thought though, when you added the extra 1/2" drywall (to make the 1" test), did you re-calibrate the unit?

    • @FixThisHouse

Great video! I am generally skeptical of most sponsored reviews, but you seem to be unbiased in your testing. There are two things that will keep me from buying one of these:
    1. Cost: You mention the price is $149 (presumably USD). Amazon in the US now lists this at $199USD, however Amazon Canada (where I am) lists it at $350Cdn. Currently that works out to $256USD, so quite a difference. To be fair this video is 2 years old, but still. I'd consider paying that if the device performed more consistently, but even recent Amazon reviews seem mixed.
    2. Performance: As you noted it doesn't like to detect PVC pipe or some wires (such as around your alarm panel). Also it seems to have issues with the orientation of wires and pipes that it does detect. I noticed in your wall mock-up tests that the image of the wires especially seem to tilt significantly as you move the device over them. I suspect this is due to the non-uniform profile of the wire; the wire has a slight twist (as is to be expected), so the device is forced to make its best guess.
Bonus: Product info from Walabot says it detects movement and they show a picture similar to that from a thermal imaging camera. This is very misleading IMO, especially considering it wouldn't detect your hand behind the drywall.

I'm planning on a renovation of my bathroom and kids toy room and have been looking to upgrade my very basic stud finder, although I've always said my wife is the best stud finder ; ) , and this device has come across my attention but the price was always what steered me away from it. I'd love to get one though and give some real life feedback during my home renovations. Love your videos and keep up the good work!

Thanks for testing the stud finder. I had been considering one for a kitchen remodel that I started. I seems that working on a mobile home, you just don't know what is behind the wallboard on the older homes. They just don't seem to follow any standards it seems.

That's pretty cool. We're remodeling a house that's been kind of hacked together and have a lot of upgrades to do. Ive been through 3 stud finders and a lot of useless "search" holes to patch. Very frustrating. Hard to find quality tools.

At 8:10, I wasn't expecting that - so you had me cracking up!! "..so it's classifying me as a stud.... you make that decision yourself!"
Great review. I finally got a seller to accept my offer!! It's an older home that will need a bit of cosmetic work, so I am doing as much research as possible regarding these stud, pipe, wire detectors--- and the fact that this one "could" detect pests.... well, actually....fir me.. now I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing! Great review though. Thanks, you stud, YOU! 😉

@Binary Mirror drain pipes don’t hold water just let it flow through and there’s also pvc/abs plumbing vents running in the walls that don’t hold water.

How does it fair with exterior walls full of insulation? 4" pvc waste pipes? metal 24" wide in-wall HVAC ducts? lathe & plaster?

Thanks for sharing your analysis on the device, it is not perfect, but it is better than regular stud finder for sure.

this is better than any other stud finders I see. Do you think this will work on plaster?

I want to say yes but I haven’t tested it on plaster since plaster is a lot more dense. I will have to do a follow up and let you know 🙏🏽😊

Ha, you're definitely a study bro! :D btw, what if you rotated the device horizontally, would it pick up the horizontal stud then? It's a pretty good device!
