Thank you for all the background on Wang Yu. When I was an African-American youth growing up in the inner city of Baltimore city, Wang Yu, we never knew his first name was Jimmy, was our hero. We would often practice the moves and making mini kungfu movies and Wang Yu was the guy we all emulated. I never knew until now that he was a real gangster. I still remember how cool he was in the One Arm Boxer. Loved that movie. Wang Yu, the epitome of cool.

@@sundayaito4366 But Wang Yu was the first Hong Kong superstar long before Bruce Lee, him and Lo Lieh basically invented and popularized the martial arts genre because they acted in martial arts films in the 60s, if it wasn't for Wang Yu's Chinese Boxer and Lo Liehs Five Fingers of Death you guys wouldn't even know who Bruce Lee was, because those were the first 2 Kung Fu movies to be marketed internationally and basically garner an interest in martial arts film and Hong Kong cinema in general, they paved the way for Bruce...sure they weren't as skilled as him because they weren't real life martial artists, they just trained for their films, but of it weren't for them, Kung Fu movies wouldn't be what it is today or would probably only be popular in the east.

Bruce Lee is the One and Only! This is true. Jimmy has his own style of "Tough guy" fighting and acting that had an international appeal as well! Jimmy was very smart and innovative as well when it came to film making. He learned a lot from the Japanese film makers when he went to Japan to learn from them with a select group of Shaw Bros actors, directors, and choreographers in the late 60's. The result was improved productions like GOLDEN SWALLOW aka THE GIRL WITH THE THUNDERBOLT and RETURN OF THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN. Jimmy changed the game of Hong Kong cinema back to a "hand-to-hand" one with 1970's THE CHINESE BOXER aka THE HAMMER OF GOD. It was so influential in my neighborhood of South Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y., that we (the male boys and teens alike) began to thrust our hands in buckets of sand and bought ankle weights because of the training sequences!
Jimmy also wrote, directed and starred in the film. This was 2 years before Bruce would do so for the 1st time with WAY OF THE DRAGON aka RETURN OF THE DRAGON. Then came the incomparable BLOOD OF THE DRAGON aka THE GREAT CHASE with Jimmy as The White Dragon with Silver Spear! A gritty take on the Yojimbo antihero type made famous by the likes of Clint Eastwood! His acting and fighting skills were and are loved by more than not. Jimmy, The Genius then went back to Japan to learn more from the best filmmakers, and co-starred in ZATOICHI MEETS THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN. Then came back to HK and joined Golden Harvest Studios. The result was 1971's Classic ONE ARMED BOXER aka THE CHINESE PROFESSIONALS, in which he also wrote, directed and starred in! In 1972 he made another Classic that was highly influenced by Japanese cinema called BEACH OF THE WAR GODS. Unfortunately for him two other Classics were released that year, one a more refined, better directed and better choreographed take on his iconic THE CHINESE BOXER called 5 FINGERS OF DEATH (in the states) aka KING BOXER (perhaps sweet revenge from the Shaw Bros who may have been a little salty at Jimmy for defecting to their #1 rival company GH!). And Bruce Lee's
THE CHINESE CONNECTION aka FISTS OF FURY was also released that year, need I say more? I can go on but I'll conclude by saying that he made other Classics like 1974's THE MAN FROM HONG KONG
1975's MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE aka ONE ARMED BOXER 2
      RETURN OF THE CHINESE BOXER
      1976's ONE ARMED SWORDSMEN
It cannot be denied that the man knows how to entertain his audiences worldwide 🌐! And that Bruce Lee is incomparable and 2nd to none. Both are true.

During the filming of the Big Boss there was constant conflict between Lee and Wei ! For years most of us who know Bruce Lee history thought that the issues where creative differences, but now with new information coming out about Wei’s connection to the mob, we can see that the conflict was a lot deeper.

Very weird title. By the way I believe that there are many good fighters around the world. Bruce Lee is unique. His technique, speed and wisdom is superb. No one is like him. Jet Li is incredible as well, followed by the second best, in my opinion, Jackie Chan. Bruce was highly dedicated human being. People who worked with him said that he was training most of his time. Insane training. He was very focused on being someone different in this world. Being the best. He definitely reached this goal. Congratulations for this video.

I remember a trip to the cinema in the 70s and one of the trailers was for The Man From Hong Kong. We thought it was totally badass and when we got home, we spent the afternoon playacting out the few brief scenes we'd seen.

It's interesting to think how Bruce would have aged. Knowing that he was such a fitness nut, I think he would have really been a leader in the mature bodybuilding and fitness industry. He would probably have endorsed fitness products like Chuck Norris has done lately, maybe even put his own name to line of exercise equipment.

I don't remember if it was Jimmy Wang Yu or if it was another triad gangster turned action star, but I once saw footage of an action star who was also a triad who entered a kickboxing match and managed to win. I bring this up because whether it was Jimmy or not, I imagine whoever it was had a similar spirit and a trial by fire way of approaching a fight, onscreen or otherwise, but with a much higher degree of success and flair than other street brawlers you might've seen otherwise.
I'm very thankful that this video was made as I had heard Jimmy Wang Yu's name before and I was surprised to realize I had seen him in movies prior to being able to recognize him and it's just really interesting to discover details about him as a person in various aspects of his life, not solely his film career and his interactions with other martial arts movie stars of that era. Although I'm not as familiar with his films as say Lee or Chan, Jimmy seemed like he had some serious skills!

Bruce Lee was NOT inspired by Wang Yu. While Wang Yu had heavy clout in HK films, Bruce thought most of Shaw's Wuxia output was corny, despite Lee eventually doing a screen test/photoshoot for Run Me Shaw. The Chinese Boxer preceded The Big Boss, but Bruce's career flourished.

That was interesting. Is there any interview footage where Wang Yu describes the making of, and aftermath of ZATO ICHI AND THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN? I've always been curious to know what lead up to the movie's creation (were Japanese audiences even familiar with HK's "one armed swordsman" series, for example? Did Wang Yu get along with Shintaro Katsu?

Respectfully, SNAKE IN THE EAGLE'S SHADOW & DRUNKEN MASTER are not Raymond Chow Golden Harvest productions. Jackie was loaned out to Ng See Yuen's Seasonal Films Co. by Lo Wei. This was prior to Jackie's breaking out his contract with Lo Wei, and contracting with Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest Production Co..
Furthermore, Jackie Chan was not under contract with Shaw Bros when Jimmy got him out of it, as mentioned. The contract was with Lo Wei's film Co..

According to italian foremost kungfu cinema expert Lorenzo de Luca, who did a documentario, another triad kung fu star arrested for homicide was the famous tien peng, aka roc tien (the notorius bandit, chiuchow guy, a touch of zen and many others), he killed another triad in a fight using a sword. 1985 in Shanghai or so. Peng also went for wang yu with that sword but didnt find him. Boys, those guys where more dangerous in real life than on screen.

It seems association the Triads and Chinese gangs played an important part in many Kung Fu actors lives and careers and those who are able to accommodate this fact seems to last much longer ... Bruce may have been someone who defied them and suffered the consequences plus other factors of course ... But we true Kung Fu fans loved all of them...Amen ... ???
