Very good tutorial. To aid with removing the timing cover there is a threaded hole just to the left of the water pump, and if you use one of the bolts from the timing cover, you can slowly tighten the bolt and it will break the gasket seal. I found this video, as I was also having issues with the aircon bolts location.
Hey mate, great video. Than you so much for taking the time to put this up. I did mine over the weekend and your video was incredibly helpful! Couldn't have done it without your help! Thanks mate 👍🙏
Nice job. Pulling mine off this week also doing the head gaskets. The AC compressor bolts was a great help as replacing that as well. All this on a 2005 VZ. Thanks.
Great vid mate, I haven’t done our yet but been watching other vids how to do this, other points to take note are apparently there’s an oil pump O ring that causes problems on oil pickup, sump removal required for that, another is pcv valve gets clogged. Hope these comments help out.
Hi. Nick one hell of an exercise to complete this maintenance👍🏻, I did guess 3 to 4 days of work but you managed in three days👏🏻🇦🇺☮🇳🇱🇳🇴Greetings.Hubertus
Bravo Dude. Good work. Ive done this job myself. Its certainly a journey. But very satisfying when youre finished. Just wanted to say Well Done for showing where those bastard bolts are on the Air con pump. All the vids I watched all failed to mention them or where they were. I found mine using a mirror with a light and got them out from above by pure feel. I dreaded putting them back but managed it. Awesome to see a new vid on this problem. Good chain set choice too. Got mine from Mace Engineering too. From a Kiwi Holden Man. Love Em.
Best cool chill tutorial yet you look a little like The King Of Mountain Peter Brock ..few questions what oil do you use for the alloytec will a thicker oil above 5w30 increase oil pressure for the belt tension and with the thermostat ring seals i lightly coat them with the blue goo sealer for a lube an better seal? am I doing the right thing by doing this? Cheers 👍
What tool did you use to remove the crankshaft pulley to pull from the inner? Can you please point me to the right direction on which tool is the best to use or even which tool is it that you have used and where I could source it. My pulley is the exact same as yours. I would highly appreciate your help.
I've just done the job. Lots of noise from near the timing chains. Removed front cover to have a look. The chain tensioners seem to be pulsing in and out. Like lack of oil pressure?? Ever heard of this?
Greetings from the States! Great video! Did you set the timing back to stage 1 when putting the left chain back on, or do you leave it in stage 2? Paranoid of smushing my valves
How did you move the power steering pulley to the side after removing the three bolts. Mine is very hard and solid and doesn’t move at all. Could you point me to the right direction please?
Is there a way to replace the oil pump without to pull apart the entire motor? I bought a car recently low oil pressure waiting is coming up. I got a new oil filter and plan to buy a new oil sensor switch but burson guy thinks since warning only comes up when car is idling it could be the oil pump. My car has over 400,000km on the clock
G'day Mr Nick, Awesome video but I think I'll stick to my aircooled engine. 😋 But the detail you've gone into on this job is top notch. This will serve as a excellent how to video in the future. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne 3810
Hi mate, is it necessary to prime the oil pump I’ve already put mine in and didn’t prime. If I turn the engine over by hand a few time will that prime it?
@@dre4616 - no doubt too late now, but along with the above, pull the plugs. It'll crank WAY faster, and impose no load (heavy) on the crank/rod bearings.

@@DemopVWgarage thanks for the info undecided if i'm gonna do this on my own or just take it to the shop. I'm from adelaide. thank you for the video mate very knowledgeable. can you do a head gasket as well if possible planning to do a full rebuild on my alloytec.

great advice on the bolt :)

Glad to help out, make sure you keep an eye on the oil levels, low oil will stretch the chains again 😉🤙🏽
You can also just time it at second stage you can skip stage one and go straight to stage 2

Done both, drill out the pcv with 4mm drill bit or piss it off completely 😁
Very good answered some questions I had before I change my timing chains as nd oil pump

Yep awesome vid Bro. Great tips and reminders at the end. Cheers.I too took my time. About 4 weeks on and off. LoL
Glad it helped

Hahaha I wish I could drive like him 😂 I use the penrite 5/40 for that reason. The rubber seal should be enough for sealing 😉
Maaaate great tutorial well done and thank you 👍🇦🇺
Thanks for the video mate. I'm about to do this on a VZ. Wish me luck!😅
Take your time 👍🏽👊🏽🤙🏽
I notice when you're finished and come back to the clip bank one the timing marks were forward a little bit did you rotate the cams manually
Where abouts?
When you brought back to over to 9 o'clock and you put the chains on bank one did you rotate them at all or move the cams at all on bank 1
They are locked with the cam locking tool

A normal universal pulley will work just make sure it goes on the inner hub. Think i got mine from ebay
I've just done the job. Lots of noise from near the timing chains. Removed front cover to have a look. The chain tensioners seem to be pulsing in and out. Like lack of oil pressure?? Ever heard of this?
What kit did you use? For sure if you have low oil pressure it would do it
On the oil pump replacement, where is the oil pickup tube connected to? Thought the pickup was connected into the oil pump itself??
oil pump just bots on to the case, oil pick up hole meets the pump once bolted together.
Greetings from the States! Great video! Did you set the timing back to stage 1 when putting the left chain back on, or do you leave it in stage 2? Paranoid of smushing my valves
Left at stage 2😉
@@DemopVWgarage Thank you!! 👍👍
How did you move the power steering pulley to the side after removing the three bolts. Mine is very hard and solid and doesn’t move at all. Could you point me to the right direction please?
You might need to soak the joint with wd40 and leave it over night. Mine was stubbon too.
what state u in howdid u go with the mace parts?
Yeh good mate, no issues yet. Victoria
Awesome job mate what brand timing chain did you use
Mace 👍🏽😉
Is there an oring or some sort of gasket behind the oil pump
No, as the cover goes over the whole pump later.
Hey mate, this video helped a lot I am about start the process of getting my kit to chain mine. Where did you get the kit from?
Mace engineering 🤙🏽
Thank you 🙏🏻

You need to take off the front engine cover to get to the pump.
Do you rotate clockwise or anti lose wise to get to second timing mark on the oil pump?
Clockwise for the last chain😉

Hi mate, is it necessary to prime the oil pump I’ve already put mine in and didn’t prime. If I turn the engine over by hand a few time will that prime it?
You could pull the fuel pump fuse out and crank it to get the oil pressure up. Remember the chains work off hydraulic oil pressure 😉👍🏽
Thanks heaps mate. 🤙🏾
@@dre4616 - no doubt too late now, but along with the above, pull the plugs. It'll crank WAY faster, and impose no load (heavy) on the crank/rod bearings.
How did you prime you oil pump before fitting ?
Just fill it though the hole, the left over air will get pushed out.
What kit did use for timing chain
Try and use genuine or mace engineering
Sir could you be so kind to convey if cylinder number 1 is top dead center at stage 2 position or stage 1. Thank you 🙂
I used the cam locking plates which put it in the right pozzie, never looked at the TDC.
Much easier than doing a front wheel drive model 3.6
Front wheel drive ??? That must have a ton of torture steer🤔

What's the timing bolt up sequence???
you talking about the timing cover?

while you were pulling it apart you should have ls swapped it ... that is the only permanent timing chain solution 🙂
Yes the v8 😉
