Growing up as a shy and timid person, learning martial arts was the best thing that has ever happened to me. It allowed me to break out of my comfort zone. I hated doing public speaking but once I started sparring with a 6ft+ 200lb+ man and got comfortable with it, public speaking became nothing. I still get anxious but once I’m on stage, I’m not as nervous as I used to be.

Two things: mental strength and the ability to overcome discomfort and resistance to stress. In today's comfortable times, where we are no longer naturally exposed to danger, people tend to degenerate.

Martial Artist are the strongest in the world!! That’s what I said when I was really young, seeing my first taste of martial arts culture. I still undoubtedly feel this way at the age of 39. Many around me believe martial arts is just violence and it’s nerve wracking to explain to people that martial arts is more than the physical aspect. I say all of that to say that martial arts and the martial artist lifestyle is great.

I´m a 165 cm/ 64kg man growing up in an insecure Mexican city. Always struggle about my size and my capacity to defend myself. Training boxing, muay thai and bjj for about 5 years now, and it makes a HUGE difference. It's not only about fighting, but it gives you the confidence to try new things...

Man I’m pretty much your size and weight, it’s definitely about fighting and there’s nothing wrongs with it. It’s primal, basic instinct. It’s to not fall in the small dog syndrome. Keep it up 💪

Yes, because if you practise a martial art, it provides a valve to release pressure and stress, making you more calm and relaxed. On the other hand: you learn, what damage can be done, if push comes to shove. And most people are deterred by the consquences. Which is a good thing and an explanation, why martial arts practitioners, who acutally know how to fight don't want to fight and try to avoid physical altercations as long as possible. Leading to a more peaceful attitude. Learning to fight in order to not having to fight. That is actually the highest form of Karate.

Personally, the camp for a fight was so tough, that it gave me mental toughness which ended up giving me the confidence I was lacking to land clients on my business.
I didn't even ended up fighting due to an injury, but I realized I'm mentally capable of not only stepping out of my comfort zone, but sprinting away from it and staying away from comfort. And from there, my fears and insecurities when talking to prospects, really went away and I started landing more clients!

Completely agree. I wasn’t unconfident, but since trading Muay Thai and boxing is healthily increased it. I think it’s across the board. I trained at Diesel gym in east London and the biggest collective of respectful people I’ve ever met is in that gym. Purely because of the confidence self security everyone has there.

I remember being around 15 years old in the local library, a man in his mid to late 20s was having a verbal outburst at the girls behind the counter, I was able to talk the man down from a state he was ready to be violent, and walk him out the door. Couldn't have done that without the calm confidence you get from martial arts.

It was a way for me to deal with grief and depression. Now it's how I maintian my health, some degree of my discipline, and yes, a good chunk of my subconscious confidence. I can't think of a better way to train up young people to be better for the world (not saying it'll fix someone with issues, but it's a good start).

I agree! I've been in the martial arts for a lifetime. Totally transformed my life. At its depth, the MAs are not what you can do to someone, but rather what you can do for someone.

At 39, lost my first in house competition. Best thing that happened to me. Lost many kgs from training but also have been a lot happier mentally past two years.
Couldn't say the same for various hobbies I've been involved in...

Self-control, confidence, and how to handle pressure...
These are the main things that happened to me.
At the time, I called myself "The number 1 coward" (like Shikamaru Nara in Naruto) since I was talk-talk-talk, but no backing up... a little boy with a big mouth... and lazy as f*ck!
When I'm in trouble, walking away, avoiding facing my responsibilities, and blaming the others for my chokes and failures...
Now, I can control myself, being WAY more objective as a person... if I'm in the wrong, no one needs to yell it because they will know that I'll take the blame... When it's confrontations, I'm in the frontline and never back down, and I'm WAY MORE calm than I never been...
I never thought that, thanks to practicing MMA, it would make me a better person since, at first, it was kinda a try-out since I wanted to do fighting at first.

Thing is there's a video like this for virtually every activity. But we only have 24 hours in a day. People should do what they enjoy and find fulfilling. For me, that's martial arts.

I don't know about confidence, the more I know tough guys in the gym, the less I want to fight a random, but there is something for sure, you get conditioned and your pain threshold gets higher, and that gives you a real advantage.

Martial arts (for regular people) is the only time when you get punched so hard in the abs that you can hardly hold your body up, when you feel like you'd vomit after 1 more minute of cardio and class isn't over for 20 minutes, and when a guy way bigger than you comes lumbering toward you with the look in his eye like a shark that smells blood. Just like I get excited to throw a body hook when I see unguarded ribs, I can't help but take the opportunity to go up and talk to that person that seems nice or attractive, I see when someone needs me to open the door, I start to believe in my strength to offer my friends advice or help moving house.

Before martial arts I really had no self-confidence, no speaking ability or social skills being an autistic adolescent. The second I found martial arts films, I became enthralled and I trained in Jujutsu. I fell out of love of it during COVID but I got back into it during my first and second year of uni training in kickboxing and Muay Thai. As of now, I have a decent level of quiet confidence and have made great friends from the fight gyms i trained in. Martial arts give us focus, purpose, health, fitness and most importantly wisdom.

To be fair, martial arts isn't much of a defense against guns/gun users. To say otherwise is.... Over confident.... Having both doesn't hurt tho.

Only thing is "This is Canada, EH!
Illegal to own many types of guns, and most certainly not allowed to carry them around as protection. Knives cannot be carried for protection or self defence purposes.
Self defence for guns..... if someone wants you dead - I would say "You're dead" unless you can run really - really fast - faster than a speeding bullet!!!
Knives - you will get cut.... most likely better to resort the the "faster than a speeding bullet thing again".

Even if you live in a place where you can carry a gun, still learn martial arts as a gun is a physical tool and if that tool gets dropped or knocked out of your hand what do you have to fall back on?
