Sheikh if you are reading this can you please dedicate an entire lecture on how to raise children in North America. We live in a society where there is so much competition in terms of academics, so getting a child to have that head start in mathematics, science etc will surely InshaAllah benefit in this duniya but should we focus more on the deen instead in the early years of the child's life or strive to keep a balance in both? What environment is best to raise a child and please also give tips from your own personal experiences. I've noticed that the education curriculum in public schools have some sort of a political agenda where teachers in kindergarten, grade 1 etc are reading children's storybook to their students that subliminally is teaching them that homosexuality is okay etc. In such cases, do you recommend to send the child to islamic school instead? Islamic schools in Canada can be very expensive but at the same time have poor academic standards in comparison to public school and especially catholic schools. Also at what age should you start getting a female child to wear the hijab and fast in the Month of ramadan (the hours here are superlong it seems quite brutal to get a child as young as 7 to fast for that long hours). Fatima Syeda If allow me to share answering your question , I would say ask yourself would you like to have a gay doctor son or straight but poorly educated son? then go for the answer that you chose.
For the fasting part, I know that once the child reaches puberty that’s when they need to start fasting. So in order for them to start fasting and get use to it over the years, you make the child fast half a day or so. In that way, I think the child will get use to it and hopefully build the metabolism they need to fast. Same with praying Salah, start preforming salah with your child at a young age. There’s always a sayings that goes, like mother like daughter/son. You as a parent should consider what you do in front of your kids; in others pray salah and fast, when your child sees that you are doing them they will also pick up that behavior. So never fear, Allah swt is always near.
I disagree with most comments to your question. It’s possible to have all of it together, Dern and Duniya. Do not undermine the capability of children to achieve. Teach them worldly studies and Quran/ Islam simultaneously. Teach them to be kind, patient , thoughtful human first . Teach them to not judge others. Seek knowledge, build a routine which establishes everything. Seek guidance from Allah and u will do good
