As a result of having to cancel services due to the Coronavirus, the elders at Heritage have prayerfully sought to fulfill three biblical duties:
Maintain the public worship of God (Heb. 10:24-25).
Love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:37-40).
Be subject to the governing authorities (Rom. 13:1-7).
In light of these obligations, we have turned to a simplified online worship service, consisting primarily of prayer, the reading of Scripture, and the proclamation of the Word.
In addition to actively watching the service, we encourage all of you to spend time singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, reading the Scriptures, and offering up your desires to God in prayer. Although we hope you are spending time in private and family worship throughout the week, we encourage you to use these means all the more on the Lord’s Day, especially during this unique season in the life of the church. Take comfort that though we may not be able to gather in body, we can gather in spirit (Col. 2:5; 1 Cor. 5:3)-indeed, in the Holy Spirit.
Although some of our face-to-face contact will be limited, the elders are committed to shepherding the flock as best we can. As always, please contact us with any questions or concerns, including prayer requests that we can share with the rest of the congregation.
During a trial like this, it may be tempting to conclude, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” But take heart: “The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’s throne is in heaven; his eyes behold, his eyelids test the sons of men. The LORD tests the righteous” (Ps. 11:4-5a). Whatever else it may be, the coronavirus is a test-a trial of our faith in Christ, hope in God, and love for one another. We will overcome as we lift up our eyes to the hills, confessing, “My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth” (Ps. 121:2).
