    Thank you so much Dr Farrelly. This video helped me greatly in my M.Phil. defense two days ago. I followed your pattern to the latter and you can’t believe that at the end of my presentation the Professors clapped and commended my presentation of which am grateful to God and your video that I watched over and over for a whole day. Thanks.

      Best of luck! Thank you for your kind words. I did practice a good bit, pacing in my kitchen and reciting it over and over. I also *loved* my research and my participants, so talking about this was from the heart - and that helped. :) Cheers!

    I think what helped me the most was teaching. When you're the instructor in the class, you theoretically have a little more control because you create a lesson plan, choose the content and delivery method. The students should, theoretically (again) know less than you on the topic - so it feels like a safe space to share. Keep at it! It's just adrenaline - and I still get the rush, after years of presenting/teaching! Just breathe. :)

    • @raillery
      @raillery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Flat Sign Definitely - I learn from my students in every single class I teach, whether that be about the content, myself, them, or humans broadly. Teaching is learning and when scaffolded effectively, learning is teaching. Cheers!

    It's funny, I'm still an undergrad student and I'm not even close to graduating, yet I still get nervous watching these videos. When I have to give a speech or talk in front of a group larger than 15 people, I start to tremble which also alters my voice. I once had to give a debate and after I was done with my opening and took a seat only to realize that I didn't breathe properly or much for 5+ minutes which caused my chest to hurt and become sore for the rest of the day. I'm glad you did well!

    Hi Moima - CHAT and AT are often interchangeable in terms of how they are spoken of in the literature. The University of Helsinki Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research is where terms are being operationalized (I can't post the link here, but you can search the Center's name). I generally used Activity Theory throughout my dissertation, but it inherently encompassed the cultural and historical aspects of the activity systems I was exploring.

    • @raifarrelly1530
      @raifarrelly1530 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry this is so late, Rounak. I'm sure my response is not useful now as you have hopefully received an answer from mentors or supervisors. In general, a defense is when you give an oral presentation that provides an overview of your study and your findings. A graduate committee listens and determines if you have satisfied your program's expectations to receive your MA/MS. Ideally, you would have a lot of support leading up to your defense, so in many ways - the defense should be your opportunity to shine and share your study. A diligent graduate committee wouldn't let you defend if you weren't ready to pass. Of course ... presentation skills and how you answer questions could impact your overall success, so practice and peer feedback is helpful.

    Really great presentation but let me just make a concern ... some slide has too much text ... sometime the public could not get immediately what you are explaining... This is a basic rule ...avoid verbosity...

    I'm scared to death of that moment. I just began my Ph program of Spanish linguistics. I know that moment will come surely. It is my biggest fear now. Does defense mean that I have to justify my research? Again , I'm SCARED.

    • @raifarrelly1530
      @raifarrelly1530 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nina - Don't be afraid. Just make sure you choose a topic that you can be excited about. If you do - you'll have no trouble doing the study and sharing it with confidence when the time comes to defend, at the end of your program. The proposal defense is when you present the idea for your study - overview of the literature, your planned methodology - of course, including research questions. You should get support from advisers along the way - but that can vary from program to program. If you aren't getting what you need in terms of mentoring, then find students ahead of you in the program, or in other programs. Spanish linguistics - exciting! I'll look forward to hearing what you choose to research for your dissertation! Best of luck. -Rai

    Phd is all crap....all those years for a final presentation that looks more like any university level PP presentation and a bunch of people asking questions. And although I admire the candidates (cause they work really hard!) this is another way to make money for universities!
