  • Sorry its been a while but the house move went pear shaped big time. Who in their right mind would sell a house these days, but there may be light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully!
So this build has been plodding along for many weeks and it may show. I'm not one for spending months on a build because I loose interest so easily.
Thanks to the people who have stuck and believed in the channel I thank you all 👍😎

I had this kit three times in my life (I'm 59), in the 1970s and 1980s. The plastic was nice and thick on this kit, when it was made at this time. Another nice thick plastic kit, made at the same time, was the Short Sunderland lll. I haven't bought Airfix kits for over thirty years, the plastic is too thin, almost translucent.

Excellent. I made one as boy. Got an unmade one (boxed) in my spare room. Brought back happy memories. I remember playing in G-ANVR in 1965 when it went to the dump at Southend airport awaiting scrapping. Me and my mates climbed out of the escape hatch on the roof and we used to sit on the wing watching the take offs and landings of the Carvairs and Viscounts. G-ANWK and others were lined up. Needless to say we helped ourselves to many of the old dials etc for souvenirs. "DO NOT JAR - HANDLE LIKE EGGS". Still got a few bits. Thanks, cheered me up.😊

Watching this build took me straight back to around 1959-1960 when I was a young teenage Airfix fan. Back then their kits ranged from two shillings (10p in new money) to 17 shillings and six pence (87.5p in new money). I think the Bristol Freighter was around 15 shillings (75p in new money). Yes they were a bit on the crude side but in the range of most schoolboys pocket money. Over the years they have come a long way and I'm astounded at the detail in todays kits. Of course the current prices reflect this. As a final note I loved watching your build of what wasn't considered a popular model.

Great build. I made one in the mid sixties. Then I built another about 1995 or 1996 when it was re-released. I painted it mainly using Halfords spray cans. I did the white cockpit framing using thin strips of white electrical insulating tape . The whole model including the canopy was then brushed with Johnson's Kleer. I still have the model in mint condition.

Fantastic build Greg! Show's in no uncertain terms what can be done with these old classics. This is my kind of modelling too. I love nothing more than taking old kits, often subjects that are not available elsewhere, and correcting and adding all the missing details. Watching this triggers another memory: February 1964, Napier Airport opening, New Zealand. I was 4 and we saw the RAF Handley Page Hastings, Bristol Brittania, and the the Victor bomber as well as many USAF aircraft and the RNZAF Vampires putting on an impressive display. The Bristol freighter was there with its clamshell doors open for the public. It looked like a plumber’s nightmare inside with all manner of ducting and pipes, gaping stomach, ribs and entrails all on display. I was truly terrified, firmly believing that it was about to swallow up my mother. Nothing could induce me to enter. I can still remember that eviscerated plane and the danger I thought it presented! But I was only 4 and eventually overcame this fear of strange equipment and earned a PPL many years after. 😱🤣
