    The almost constant state of war of medieval times always amazed me. If you look at Hungary for instance, even after the devastating invasion of the mongols, Béla organized various military campaigns almost every year.

      Yeah, most of wars consisted of army sitting outside a castle, waiting for them to surrender. Battles were the exception, not the rule. And of course, peasants suffered, as the army sitting outside said walls had to get food somewhere, so the locals were "asked" to give it up. Wars mainly happened in the spring or summer, rarely in other seasons, so for an average guy, it wasn't as prevalent.

      Interesting how often the pope was the major pacifying force in europe at that time. The combination of the threat and danger of excomunication and the glory of crusades were probably the best deterances of war back in those days.

      People say its "less deadly" than modern warfare, considering the the army sizes and population sizes that's not really true. For example in this battle the Hungarians lost 1/3 of their army, that's an insane amount of causalities when compared to modern warfare (not including the world wars).

    At 8:52 Béla IV. says "Cat kick it!" which is an older Hungarian way of saying "damn it"
    Also, he has a nickname, the Second Founder (the first being Árpád, who conquered the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century), which was given to him due to his enormous and largely successful efforts to repopulate and rebuild the Kingdom of Hungary after the Mongol invasions of 1241-42. Due to this (and other factors), he is considered to be among the greatest of Hungary's kings.

      It's incredible because less than a week ago I was just reading about the first and second mongol invasions of Hungary.
      I was amazed by the work of Bela IV.
      Hungary and Poland helped a lot to preserve Europe from Eastern invasions. Spain too in Lepanto. They are a bit undervalued.

    • @tamaszlav

      The first one was István. You know, the one who founded the kingdom.

    • @Holastor
      @Holastor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Tamás Molnár King Stephen I. founded the Hungarian state. However, the land of the Carpathian Basin was claimed by Árpád, for which he is commonly referred to as "the founder of the country."
      So, the First Founder is Árpád, and the Second Founder is Béla IV.
      Saint Stephen founded the state, so he is regarded as a different kind of founder, the only one who founded the Kingdom.

      At the time Poland was extremly devided, it somehow resembled the Holy Roman Empire. There were many small duchies which constantly fought each other, and prince of Kraków (who was nominally the ruler of whole country) had very little authority. Thus, these duchies had diffrent interest, and here Prince of Kraków Boleslaw V supported Hungarians while Silesian supported Bohemians.

      In these times being king didn't mean you had complete control over your vassals. They could and often did form alliances with foreign powers. This is why being king back then meant you always had to ensure your vassals loyalty. One measure to achieve this was justifying their power as granted by god himself. Having the biggest army also helped. Being king was hard work.

    Hello from Brazil!🇧🇷

  • @RiderofRiddermark
    @RiderofRiddermark 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Today this village is called Groißenbrunn. I live in a village just to the southwest of it.
    Not far to the north are the small towns of Dürnkrut and Jedenspeigen, where one of the most important battles of Austrian history took place. I hope it will get featured soon...

    • @mr_george7761
      @mr_george7761 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So it is called Bigger Brno?

    • @RiderofRiddermark
      @RiderofRiddermark 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mr_george7761 The exact meaning is unknown.
      "Groißen-" most likely doesn't stem from "Groß-", which would mean "Big/Great". It's the result of a sound shift; Groißenbrunn was called "Gressenbrunn" during the 18th century and "Kressenbrunn" during most of the Medieval Era. The earliest mention is in a document from 1157 as "Chressinprunen".
      "Brunn" definitely means "fountain" or "well"; in modern German it's "Brunnen" (similar in pronunciation to the medieval "-prunen").
      "Chressinprunen" and even more so "Kressenbrunn", which was the name with the longest period of use, most probably means "fountain surrounded by (water)cress". ("Kresse" refers to both water and garden cress in modern German.) Today's "Groißenbrunn" is just the result of language evolving over time and the original meaning getting lost.
