C&O 2716 Moves for the First Time Since 2001

- On July 22, 2019, the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. and The Kentucky Railway Museum operated the Heritage Highball test run with Clinchfield Railroad 800, steam locomotive 2716, C&O Caboose 3203 (donated by CSX), and the rest of the excursion consist between New Haven and Boston, Kentucky. The purpose of this test run was to make sure everything on the locomotive is mechanically sound before interchanging withCSX this coming Friday, July 26th.
CSX and R. J. Corman Railroad Group have partnered with Kentucky Steam to move the locomotive and the supporting rail cars from New Haven to Ravenna, Kentucky where the 2716 will eventually be restored to operating condition at the new Kentucky Rail Heritage Center. This test run marks the first time C&O 2716 has operated over the Kentucky Railway Museum's trackage since 2001.
At Boston, Kentucky, we were able to grease the rods on C&O 2716 with an alemite gun on loan from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Thanks to collaborative efforts between Kentucky Steam, TVRM, KRM, CSX, and RJ Corman, we anticipate this historic event to be a monumental success. Without creative collaboration between these fine organizations, Kentucky Steam certainly wouldn't be where we are today.

The Clinchfield Railroad chose #2716 for another steam engine on their steam program. #2716 was hauled out if Louisville (the location of the KRM back in the day) and Clinchfield F7 #800 hauled her to wherever they were gonna restore 2716 (Which she just did the other day). Unfortunately for the Clinchfield, they were merged with the Family Lines System when this plan was still being processed for #2716 to run for the Clinchfield were foiled. Family Lines denied #2716 to run on their rails but luckily, the Southern purchased .
I'm happy to see this gorgeous Kanawha moved again, I hope in the not to distant future she'll be moving under her own power! Kudos to the hard working KSHCO volunteers!

So glad to see that awesome young man picking up the mantle for the old timers. He's exactly right, this is a rare lost art and these things are treasures of our past. I'm grateful they're preserved at all, but keeping them running is something truly beautiful. Respect!
Now all that's left is for C&O 614 to be moved from Clifton Forge to Ravenna.

This is just amazing! I used to visit KRM and volunteered in the 90s helping replace the boiler jacket on the 152. Whenever I looked at the 2716, it always seemed too big, old, and costly for the museum to invest in restoration. No criticism at all to the great folks at KRM. Theirs is an operation of which they can be very proud. 2716 just gave the impression of being the stuff of "some day" type dreams. Not anymore! A congratulations to Kentucky Steam Heritage and all those who put their efforts to bringing 2716 back to life.
I'm glad to see this Loco alive once more. And thank God, CSX has started participating in preservation of Railroad history once more.

I'm a huge fan of getting steam engines running again, BUT I really think that this one, right now, is not a wise choice. There are to many others that desperately need funding right now - have you seen the condition of 1225 lately? She's running, but desperately in need of a lot of love. There's I think exactly ONE 4-6-4 left in the U.S. that is in dire need of rescue and rebuilding. And if you really HAVE to have another Berkshire right now, help with the NKP 759 up in Scranton. I think I saw a comment referring to the NKP 587 running - I hope I'm wrong but I understand that she's never meant to run again, cosmetic restoration only. (Those never last unless the Loco is entombed in a building and cut off from the rails forever) OH! there's also a heavy Santa Fe Pacific that is trapped on a tiny tourist line that is slowly sinking into the mud that could really use a rescue too. Just some things to think about.
But think about this 2716 was in horrible condition and so is 614 yes 1225 doesn't look that good now but they will fix her but if we fix this it will be the first C&O Steam Locomotive to run and if we pray hard enough 614 will join her one day.
ther are 2 4-6-4 suburban taknk locos too both are also Canadian national locos, they are identical to locomovives CNJ used on branch-lines if i can remember,
I always wondered why always 4-8-4, or 2-8-0, or 2-8-2, 2-8-4 get restored fast? You never see one of the 12 remaining Grand trunk and western class P5 0-8-0 which last ran in revenue service in 1980! 4-8-2 mountian type 4-4-2 etc...

The 0-8-0's having been run so realively recently for a american steam loco means restoration wont be so hard, plus its basically the right size for an excursion loco that's going to be pulling about 6 heavyweights as always.

The proper technique for a pull start is Make sure the ignition is on put her in second gear and pop the clutch!
I played train simulator, and steam trains are tricky to handle. Especially on a simulation
It's not 100% realistic, but I got a general idea of how they work. And why steam trains where generically frowned upon. With steam trains, boiler pressure is everything. It helps pump water into the boiler, control your brakes. Not sure about the modern models, but crom what I understand, steam was everything with steam trains. With diesels, they are MUCH easier to handle than steam trains. Which is why they switched from steam to diesel in the first place. But even then, I don't want to scrap all steam trains. I mean, having diesels and electrics only makes the railroads seem like it's in stasis. But steam trains, you can tell they are working hard. And that makes them much more appealing and railroads much more fun.
Diesels replaced steam because they were more efficient and less expensive to maintain
@@christianwishmeyer4107 I only think they are expensive because of how hot the inside of a boiler is. Causing the metal to bend and making parts become more unstable. But I don't want to scrap all steam trains. Railroads would look so bland without them.

Saw the CSX safety vest and had already thought if they would do similar as Union Pacific with their steam program? But please do not change the markings of this locomotive to CSX. It may be the rail company I'm used to with a rail line through my hometown, but I've thought it may be a fun ad campaign for CSX if they had commercials of rail transport through history, shipping goods, equipment, bulk materials, and assorted freight, even down to the last bag of cat kibble, and the narrator ask "isn't that right, Chessie?" As a gray tabby looks up and meows.
(Okay, yes, I do have a gray tabby named Chessie. I've had this sort of wish)

Spence Pots Amtrak didn’t do shit, they are still a mess. CSX on the other hand has pulled a complete 180 from their previous attitude, and they are now getting fully behind KSHC and the 2716 project. I just hope this new era of “peace” lasts...

If this is successful could the Allegheny be next? The one in Baltimore is in poor shape but the one in the Ford museum is in good shape. It would be a massive undertaking but it is a massive steam locomotive! A friendly competition between CSX (Allegheny) and Union Pacific (BigBoy) . The 2 most powerful and massive steam locomotives in the world! King Kong and Godzilla. Ali and Frazier. Celtics and Lakers! Here's hoping.
