This is by far the best Romeo and Juliet ever made in movie form. And the scene with that song as sung by gorgeous high tenor voice is epic. For anyone that appreciates the amorous part of the human condition this scene, from cast, to the song interjected between the Bard's golden world play on first love's first flirtations and then the sad truth of the transience of this period of life. You gotta love or at least appreciate it. I can only imagine the kind of Star Olivia Hussey would have become of this was just 20 years later. She is all real, no CGI only make up from that time and she was only 16 or 17. Romeo was gorgeous too. For me this just one of those seminal pieces of film. I remember people buzzing about it ten years later when i was old enough to register such things. Zeffirelli will always have the seminal film version I think.
YourMadTourGuide - She was 15. Leonard was 17. I was 14 when I saw it, they didn't look young to me, they looked the perfect ages for these roles. It's been my favorite movie of all time all these years. I had seen a few scenes from the play, and Juliet was always 35 or older. It was wonderful to see them the ages they were meant to be.
So far, this is the best rendition of Romeo and Juliet. I'm impressed by the fact that they made the first meeting more romantic than it is in the actual play! (i read the script in school)

@FlyingMonkies325 I mean, in a time period when almost all marriages where wither arranged marriages or marriages to cover pregnancies, actually finding someone you like even a little bit would be the perfect marriage option. Not to mention that just having kissed would bind you and marriage would be necessary as anything else would mean the woman was defiled.

I've always thought this version was the absolute BEST! The sets, music, costumes, director & 2 very young, beautiful actors who were really madly in LUST with each other when they made this movie. No other film embodies the insane passion of first love/lust. U do believe this couple would do any crazy thing 2 be together. The classic Romeo & Juliet movie (than Shakespeare in Love, lol!)

This is just the best Romeo and Juliet on films! Both Leonard and Olivia were young, beautiful, they have a great chemistry between them and yes they could act plus Zaffirelli was able to capture the freshness and created this classic of the classic that will never ever be old!
This film is from 1968. I think I was 12 when I saw it. Wonderful film and such good acting, again. Me too, I was touched by the singing. I just read that Olivia comes from Argentina, and was raised as a catholic; and yesterday I saw an interview with her just after she made the film. She was 16 and chosen among 500 actresses for her perfect roll in Juliet.
Rest in peace Franco Zeffirelli and thank you so much for making this film. It is my favorite Romeo and Juliet film! I love everything about it! Such a romantic film with two young and very good actors. All Romeo and Juliet films after this one pales. Always remembered you will be and never forgotten.

Happy Birthday to my favorite Juliet! Of all the versions of Romeo and Juliet that has been filmed, this one remains my favorite. Olivia and Leonard were teenagers and looked so beautiful together. You really believed them and that score is to die for!. She is 68 today and looks good! .
For me she will always be the mother of Jesus. 😇 The purest, the most innocent and angelic face in the history of cinema. She is a living Leonardo DaVinci painting.
I had seen this film back in '68 as a daft 16 year old and that was fine. But I left school at 18 and travelled the world for a few years until I was 20. I spent a year in the Polynesia and then ended up in Midwest America in a tiny township. I didn't realise how starved of my culture I was until I went one afternoon to a cinema in Fondulac and this was the movie. Thank goodness the cinema was empty as the Italian visual, the lines, music, story must have been working on me and I found I was weeping uncontrollably by the time Juliet had taken the sleeping draft...." an untimely frost upon the fairest flower of all the field..." says her father.
I also saw this movie in '68. The high school arranged for all of us to see it as part of English class. It was a field trip. When we got to the theater the girls all went to seats on the main floor and us dudes went up in the balcony. At the end of the movie, where Juliet stabs herself, they are holding the funeral and Sir Laurence Olivier is sadly quoting Shakespeare as Romeo and Juliet were being carried away, I became aware of some odd sounds coming from around me. Sniffing, muffled coughs. I looked around and here are all these tough teenage boys wiping their eyes, their noses, choking back tears. You know it's a good flick when you can make teenage boys cry like babies over the ending! :-)
