When I arrived at my first duty station, Ft. Bliss in '82. I spent my sign up bonus on a lightly used KTM 420 with the large tube Fox nitrogen rear shocks. What a beast it was! Awesome to ride in the desert.
I have an MC and a GS. Love those bikes, rode the MC on a lower level supercross track several times, put a million miles on them in the woods and they always attract attention. KTM/Penton forever!
There was a guy in my subdivision back in the late 80's that had one for sale. I rode it at his house/field. Something was wrong with it because first and second gear it was a complete dog. But it hit like a hand-grenade in 3rd. It simultaneously dug a trench while trying to flip over backwards. That big radial head was hard to miss. I think it was a '78 model 420. I had an '84 KTM 125MX. I've been a fan of the white & blue KTMs ever since. You are more than an owner. You are a steward of these fine motorcycles.
I had this exact same bike, when it was almost new. I trailrode it alot, I raced it MX, enduro, and of all things even won some shorttrack races on a deep cushion shorttrack. Such a sweet engine, easy to ride and fast enough. Tough and reliable. I had the 495 twin shock also, and it really wasnt the bomb the 420 was. 495, you always knew it was big and long and tall. Didnt stop with the now weak drum brakes.....lotsa power, lots and lots, fun bike but not a race bike for me.
you know if you know what you are doing you can learn to start them left footed. It isn't that hard, treat it like a 4 stroke, find TDC, go just past and give it a good kick. All while sitting on the bike like normal. It will start right up. My big KTM has never taken more than 3 kicks using that method. And others will think you have stumbled onto some magic being able to start it left footed.
A friend from High School had a 495. I usually had to start it for him, as he was skinny. Another guy from my PE class ('77) raced a 400 in the Hang Ten USGP at Carlsbad that year. That was a truly beautiful bike. Dang, think I just talked myself into buying a 400 to race at CALVMX:)
My first dirt bike, no shortage of power . A man's bike for sure.
Yes, it's a rocket ship

No such thing as an 78 420 buddy. 420 is 79 in some markets and 80. There are also a 79 with the older 400 engine. 495 came in 81.

I have a silencer identical to the one on that bike. Is that one stock on the Ktm? I know it didn’t originally come on my bike
No, I believe the silencer on my bike is aftermarket. I think it's a Richter

I sold this bike and really miss it but I now have a 1981 KTM495.
I wonder how much you have to spend for a 1979 or 1980 420 or a 1981 KTM 495 if you can found one.
