I was getting ready to unearth this segment of my 86' XV-700 to check all the internals while I rebuild the starter motor. So glad my recent purchase didn't have the forward controls since they get in the way of some of those front fasteners. Appreciate the aid.
This is the very best video I have seen, The last motorcycle I had was a 1981 Virago 750 purchased right off the showreoom floor. I rode it until 2012 when we moved from CA to NC I gave it away as we had no room to load it in the hauler. My wife purchased a 1996 Virago 1100 for a late Xmas present for me. ($500) The guy that sold it to her said "It only needs a starter relay and it would run". HAHAHAHA I replaced the Starter relay and it only clicks. Now I'm going to replace the starter. When I pull the left side cover I'm going to check the gears and replace them if needed. I have replaced the missing exhaust gaskets, replaced the brake pads and rear shoes, missing bolts and the 41r-71 relay. I was having problems with the shifter when I pulled the cover I noticed someone installed it in upside down and forgot the spring. When I called the guy to ask him some questions he told me HIS MECVHANIC checked it over and said it was just the starter relay was defective. He would not tell me who the mechanic was. I suspect he was the mechanic. This video was an excellent review for me. Thanks again for the great video.
Thanks for making this video - I have to remove that cover to replace a faulty stator and this will help immensely!!! I'm sure that I will watch this many more times to make sure I'm not missing something when I do the work Thanks again!
You have no idea how much this actually helps. I have an 88 xv750. i appreciate you going over the starter portion specifically cause that's where I was having issues!
You know it's a pain in the ass when this is the best video and it still ain't the best. Also I had to watch this video like 8 times to get er done lol
holy shit, thank you so much for this video! I made the mistake of jiggling the Clutch actuator when I was changing the cable and the "balls" behind the cover fell out of their spot so I had to take it all apart
thanks for doing it, this was a very good video. nice to see someone notice a video for something isn't done and do one to cover it. I would like to mention my 86 has the torx bit for the pivot pin so I don't know if yours does and you just used an allen on it anyway or not.another important note is for some reason many people have trouble getting the clutch pivot put back together correctly and there is absolutely no reason or need to remove the nut and take it apart, so just unhooking the cable from it is all that is needed. also I would like to mention something he didn't talk about, those case screws are often slightly different lengths and if you mix up where they go you can easily strip out the threads putting the screws in the wrong holes so THAT is why you MUST use a cardboard or something to keep then in the right order
Not sure if I said allen but I meant tore for sure. Good call pointing it out. The clutch pivot on mine was disengaged internally which is why I took it apart, but if it aint broke don't fix it would be the suggestion for sure! And thanks for clearing up the screw lengths, I had meant to mention it which is why I used the cardboard template in the first place...things get missed when filming though lol
I have a 96 but it is just about the same. I really needed this video to finish taking off the cover to get to my stator. I was close to throwing in the towel.. I really hope that the stator was the problem... Fun tinkering has turned into !#%*÷×!#!$@$!!..... 😆
Please disconnect the battery when you do this! The plastic cover over the solenoid has Chrome inside that leads electricity. I shorted my starter not having the battery disconnected when messing around with the solenoid when removing the left cover as seen here. You can disconnect the wires easily, just follow them and you'll see the connectors.
Great video man , very detailed and helpful information. I have to go through this on my bike. I was wondering the smaller "cover" over the starter that reveals the t30 bolt assembly has a gasket but mine is missing do you think gasket maker would work in a pinch? I haven't had any issues with leaks before hand but now I see that there was never a gasket I'm thinking it should be there.
HI WHISKY GREAT VIDEO DO U REMEBER THE TORQUE ON THE SIDECOVER BOLTS MY( CLYMER MANUAL )DOESN'T GIVE THE TORQUE FOR ALL THE BOLTS ON THE SIDECOVER I HAVE A 1985 YAMAHA VIAGO XV 1000N CA ALSO THE TORQUE SEQUENCE AND WHERE TO START THANKS WHISKY
Thanks for this, its gonna be a big help. You wouldn't happen to know the size/thread of the screws for the starter solenoid? Like yours mine are completely stripped and I want to replace.
No worries. I eventually got them out, had to sacrifice the cover. once i had the crankcase cover off I used a dremel tool to cut a large notch in the screw heads and had to use a metal paint scraper to get enough leverage to break the threads.
So it was not really pointed out on the video but I was taking apart my motorcycle and when I pulling of the cover, one of the cables came apart and I was wondering if you can help out with that?
Hi Whisky, I have a 1996 Yamaha Virago 750 with an oil leak problem from the left side so need to replace the gasket, followed up your instructions (thank you very much by the way, it is a great help)and used the cardboard and removed the cover along with the clutch and starter, everything come out ok and have the new gasket in place but now the pin who holds the bearings for the starter and fly wheel come out and don't know how to relocate the bearings back in place. Can you tell me what is the correct way to install them back please? I remember you mentioned in the video don' t pull the cover so hard and I think thats the mistake I did. Thank you very much for your help because either your bike is a 1986 model, your video is really helpful
Are you talking about the gears for the starter bendex? Watch this video as he shows how it all goes back together. th-cam.com/video/vzxJypPu6OU/w-d-xo.html
Hey man thanks for the video. I have a problem I count 12 for my cover. I just put back on and have an extra bolt in hand....😡. No clue Something in side I’m assuming. If you can get back on where it might go....
I have an 1985 1000, I'm having a hard time replacing the starter bendix. It still has the factory fork bracket so to speak. I can't get the gears to sit in properly. Do you have any suggestions? I don't know if you have had to remove it, but I'm stumped.
Its been awhile since I have worked on that bike. But I seem to remember it took a bit of wiggling and twisting etc to get everything to sit properly. Then I used a metal ruler to hold everything in place while I reinstalled the side cover etc so it didn't pop back out. Hope that helps in some way.
Been awhile since I did it but I don’t believe I had any special tools ever. I do have a few screwdrivers I have heated and bent to fit into weird places on bikes so maybe that? Sorry can’t remember exactly
Great video. This is a huge help for me. I'm have a stator problem with my XV 750 as well. Its not charging. Do you have a video of removing the stator from the housing? Was the stator the culprit with your charging problems? Thanks again and good luck with your build.
I didn't take a video of the actual stator removal, but it was super easy. Three Allen head bolts hold it in place and there are a couple clamps that hold the wires in place. I replaced the Reg/Rec as the stator tested ok other than low output. Bike is charging now but will replace the stator as well soon to be safe. Test your output at the stator AND at the red wire coming from the Reg/Rec to see what they both are. My stator had 14.5v AC at each of the 3 wires (buddies working virago has 20) and I had 0v DC at the Reg/rec wire.
+JuanCarlitoOnline Ok thanks. Next question is where there any gaskets that you had to deal with and did you have to get new ones or were you able to re-use them? Any chance of re-assembly video? Thanks again.
+Jeff Bruneel I didn't take a reassembly video no. But yes there is a gasket on each side cover. I re used the one on the right side. The left side didn't have one on my bike so I just used the copper color high heat gasket maker as a temp. I will order a new one when I replace the stator as they are far more reliable than the gasket maker. Reassembling was pretty easy, just reverse the order and when you put the cover back on line up the shifter arm and the little dowel pins and it lines right up. Just keep pressure with a thin metal ruler or thin screwdriver on the starter gears. By pushing it in it makes things easier.
Hi, I have plan to do this. I have 1994 xv750. Thanks for the video.
I was getting ready to unearth this segment of my 86' XV-700 to check all the internals while I rebuild the starter motor. So glad my recent purchase didn't have the forward controls since they get in the way of some of those front fasteners. Appreciate the aid.
First video showing how to get the what i call the fork on the starter what a big help T.Y. so much
I have a 1986 xv700 and your video was a great help for taking off the cover. Thanks for posting it.

Glad I could help in some way. Just sold this bike to buy a bigger one. Was a bitter sweet day. lol
Hi, gasket and start clutch spring and o-ring replaced. Not yet filled oil but will do it today. Then start without spark.
Hey man, thank you for making this video. Really helpful.

The tricky Allen on the bottom side of the starter is nearly impossible I may have stripped it any suggestions?
Need to know about the terminals on the starter solenoid ; which one goes to the stater motor or simple line in/ line out or accessories out from kjh
Thankyou
great video .just like you said nothing showing how to do this, till now . can go ahead now and do it , thank,s
Appreciate the comment man.
hi I have got new stator and there is 3 white cables coming from it which cable goes where do you know , thank,s

I saw that when you open the cover where's the starter gear? Is it in the cover?

I'm currently rebuilding my xv1000's starter and starter clutch assembly. Could you be more specific maybe I could help
How in the hell do you get those screws off the back of the starter housing? There’s no acess

What size is that bolt for the starter under the cover
