I was adventure riding when I started in the 70's. Most on road bikes, road tyres and long dirt roads as most roads were dirt except major roads. No glamping, just camping in rain, dust and snow.

Have a mate that’s just completed the Arctic circle with Mike Ferris,……… he’s got the biggest smile now and just loved it. I’d be interested in going to the cape after watching mad tv and the girls, but the body needs to repair itself before any sort of attempt (Elwood guided tour). It’d be a once in a lifetime experience for these busted bones 😉😉😉

As long as you can go at a pace that you feel comfortable with, right? Over the many years of on-road club rides and in numerous clubs, I find that while every pre-ride instruction includes, "ride at your own pace" the ride is never at a slow pace and if you are a relatively slow rider, then you just don't fit in, even if no one says anything to you about being too slow. I'm happy to pay the money for group rides and I can keep up with just about any fast rider on-road but when it comes to anything but good gravel roads, I just go slow compared to folks that have been riding offroad since Adam was a boy - and I just don't think it's appropriate when the faster riders have had several minutes to rest and catch their breath while waiting for the slower riders catch up but as soon as the slower riders arrive, it's like , "let's go" not giving the slower riders a chance to also have a bit of a breather.

I can certainly understand the scenario you've presented, I've been that rider myself. It can depend on the tour and the opporator, so it's worth looking for tours that focus on beginner riders, like Aussie Bike or Hike's Kickstarter tour. My wife and I did that one and really enjoyed it. th-cam.com/video/YX0toGkt96A/w-d-xo.html

Great information for somebody like myself, who’s just acquired a bike to do such a ride 🇦🇺

Not for me, I want to stop and smell the roses whenever I see them. Group rides seems to be, Go Go GO.

Yep, very good point. That’s why I like the solo rides as well.

They are good for newer riders, to gain a bit of confidence.

It’s weird to think for me. I not that far away from jumping ship!
    Awesome video mate.

Being an older rider just returning from a long hiatus from off road, my skill set would be more of a hindrance to a paid group ride. Gaining some confidence on day rides with a mate first & also gaining some bike fitness will be my goal. 😁

What you suggest going out with mates first is a good idea, but after that, don't stress too much about pace. There is always a range of pace throughout the pack.
