  • So I'm heading out Wild Camping this weekend. I had been asked a few times about packing so I thought I'd talk through what you need for wild camping and how I fit it all in my pack.

    Interesting to hear other people's packing regimes, mine is almost identical. I tend to do it the way you do it and then a couple of nights before when I'm going to sleep actually run through in my head setting up-Put my bag down. Need the tent , poles , pegs etc then think about sleep system, sleeping bag, mattress, food, cooking, utensils, gas etc etc that way I am nearly always remembering what I need lol. I also used to do written lists but found I never really checked them off the following time once I become more confident. I think lists are quite good when you're starting out because you can put a line through the things that you didn't use and that you don't need (with exception of first aid) you can then chop out the stuff not needed. My biggest overpack is always clothing, but I just worry about getting soaked through and cold or having skiddy pants 😜

      yes I should have mentioned that.. I used to write lists myself to then knock off what I didn't use. great advice.

    Good job Dan👍👈 New campers can certainly use your routine to get out there and enjoy their time. Everybody is different but having a "game plan" is just smart, laying stuff out to look at is especially useful in making up ones mind. Happy 2024 and we'll see you in the next one.

    Great to hear that a seasoned camper considers the Cloud Up 2 as good in the wind and cold.
    I was new to wild camping last year and my budget meant that I needed to buy for "one size fits all."
    At least for now anyway.
    I've not had my Cloud Up 2 out in bad weather yet but it coped with 20mph gusts without even breaking a sweat.

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I recently saw a wind test video that was testing lots of expensive tents.. plus a couple of cheap ones.. the cloud up was in the cheap pile.. and it out performed all.. it buckled and folded flat at 70mph but sprung back up good as new after.. the guy was impressed.

    G'day Dan, yep the when and where dictates the final carry, but the "compartmentalisation" in one's mind is the way to go about it. And I couldn't agree more; lay the kit out a day or two before. think I've only ever forgotten stuff, (or could have made a better choice), working off a list.
    Personally I always carry a poncho, because; it doubles as a pack cover in the rain, (without letting water get between you and your pack), and it also provides a small tarp/awning option when in camp, regardless of the season. (the Tomshoo job you showed many moons ago has proven to be a little, light weight, champion).
    I do also carry a few niceties in the navigation category; compass/map, notebook/pencil/sharpie and small binos;
    since A. cant trust network coverage. B. batteries/power banks will run out at some point. and C. to keep the skills up, ... besides I find it quite fun.
    Btw; It only took me a coupla decades of wet knees and bum, to work out a kneeling/sitting pad is a mighty fine idea ; )
    Top vid mate !!! Cheers Duke.

    • @CampLifeBushcraft
      @CampLifeBushcraft  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Duke, how's it going?
      thanks for your comment.. I found lists are easy to keep adding things to.
      I still have the little poncho.. and it's in my plans for the summer. Warren and I have decided that we are doing the South Downs way trail. and I have been considering gear for this. it's 100 miles so I want to be as light as possible. the poncho is the front runner as my waterproof of choice I think.

    • @eyeofthetiger4184
      @eyeofthetiger4184 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CampLifeBushcraft All good here Dan, it's been a relatively cool summer down south where I am, (so far at least). Plenty of intermittent rain as well, which I do appreciate and it fills up the dams too.
      Not getting out amongst it as much as I'd like, my little four legged mate, (Kylie), is still quite a puppy, (shoulda called her Missy, since she gets into so much miss-chief), she aint really a "bush dog" breed either and several km is enough for her at this stage ..... probably me too ; ) Though I am doing some weight training and such in anticipation. If ya dont use it, ...... ya lose it ; )
      How's Lolly coming along ?
      I'm certainly not going to "Proclaim" I've walked 500 miles with the poncho, let alone 100, (in one go anyway, maybe a total of 100), but I can say its not showing any signs of degradation so far.
      I do carry a waterproof jacket and trousers in winter too. So if it ever fails to cut the mustard, ...... all is not lost ; ) Besides, in a tarp configuration, there's still something to wear around camp should the heavens open up.
