My Great grandfather Thomas "Tommy" Keagan was a seargent in the korean war, i never got the chance to meet him due to him passing away a week before i was born, but i did a school project on him and the korean war; Learned a lot of fascinating history about it.

My dad, William J. Chrysler (Bill Chrysler), manned a half-track and protected the mortar units. He's turning 94 in a week and just arrived here in South Korea on the Korean Veterans Revisit Program.
A movie needs to be made to remember this Canadian and Australia victory.

My family fled during the Korean War and settled in Busan and has been living well so far. After a long time, the Republic of Korea has developed a lot and suffered a lot in the war.
I'm helping countries that are missing.
All of these are the sacrifices of many countries that helped during the Korean War and thanks to people.
It's been a long time now, but many people still appreciate and remember your hard work during the Korean War.

My father too fought In this battle he was a private 3rd battalion RAR . He was lucky to survive and at the time of this battle April 1951 he was 19 years and 2 months of age .
The battle of Kapyong my father was there a New Zealander...part of the NZ artillery Corp...he told me his company supported Australian and Canadian troops from the Chinese invasion...a war not well known but has had a very big impact on Korea. Lest we forget those who have fallen for their country.
An old Family friend Ray Spittal who recently passed away, served in RNZA 16th Field Reg, and my own Father was in RNZASC. He and 3 of his mates were Kiwi Sect. Served with 28th Field Reg, Royal Engineers. Attached to plant troop, who were Canadians.
This Aussie Knows of our kiwi brothers at Kap Yong, same in Nam (Long Tan, Captain Morrie Stanley and the other kiwi's, WW2 and WW1), Thank you NZ .
I interviewed an Australian veteran of that battle, Ted Hearn
Ted had been one of the subjects I interviewed from the WWII 2/14 battalion of the Australian Imperial Force, veterans of the Middle east, New Guinea and Borneo. Ted had collapsed with scrub typhus during the brutal and legendary Kokoda track campaign where the Japanese had attempted to cross the Owen Stanly ranges of New Guinea to capture Port Moresby. He regained consciousness in a repatriation hospital in Melbourne Australia. In spite of his papers being marked 'not to serve outside Australia' Ted volunteered for the Korean war.
Ted was quite a character. After defeating the Vichy French in the Syria campaign, another forgotten war but 'nasty little war', he and an engine driver mate had borrowed a steam train and drove it to the Turkish border and back.
He said of Korea, 'It had two types of weather, boiling hot and freezing cold. We should have apologized and given it back to the Koreans'. Ted said of Kapyong 'It was worse than anything I faced in the last war... They came on, wave after wave like ants, blowing bugles and making all kinds of noise.'
The battle ended on April 25, ANZAC day, the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in WWI.
Sadly all the men i interviewed are gone now, but we will remember them at the 2/14 battalion reunion lunch on Friday.
Tell you what though Australian troops while being supported by New Zealand artillery was not to be fucked with back in those days. Seeing this and the battle of Long Tan, they averaged a kill to death ratio of like 2000 enemy killed for every 1 death. Also the fact that Canadian troops were holding back multiple waves of machine gun wielding Chinese that were attacking from multiple directions with only single shot rifles for as long as they did is awe-inspiring. May us Western brothers always remain allies!

My 3rd cousin fought and died at Kapyong. He is one of the 10 fallen. Many have forgotten but I will not.

My Dad was in this Battle. I have his blue bar and all his medals right here.. What Lt. Grey said at the end.. true..My dad never talked about it. I had no idea about any of this until his funeral when the Legion brought a trumpeter and Pastor to give him a proper Salute. They framed all his medals and honoured him properly. And thank God they did, because Thomas Dennie Harris would have just as happily gone into eternity without any praise for his bravery. Men like him are rare, and almost none to be seen in the modern era.

Being ex 3RAR, the story of the Battle of Kapyong runs deep in the Battalion, I could almost feel myself being there, it was a proud moment for the armies involved, my personal condolence goes to all the families who lost love ones to this battle, and my sincere gratitude to all who fought and died in the Korean war "LEST WE FORGET"
My father was Sgt John David Wesołowski of D Company 2PPCLI at Kapyyong and he spoke very highly of the men of 3RAR. He also appreciated those Aussie pilots that provided close air support during their part of the Battle. Well done!

This is one of my father's stories of the War in Korea. He was a sergeant in D Company of 2PPCLI. One day to add to the C-Rations his troopers had to eat in the field he went hunting for game with his Lee-Enfield rifle. He eventually saw a deer which he shot & started to field dress. The deer was full of worms which put him off & he decided to abandon it. Starving civilian refugees streaming southward showed up & begged him for the meat. He waved it to them & they fell upon it skinning & cutting it up. They were so grateful & they offered him the best piece which he declined. They were so hungry he also gave them his C-Rations. He told me this story years later with tears in his eyes, a lump in his throat.
His name was John David Wesołowski.
@@lupusdeum3894 My grandfather who is 92 and was with 2PPCLI.(I think B company) told me almost this exact story about hunting the deer and later giving his rations to local villagers. I will be talking with him tomorrow so I'll mention your father's name. Thanks for sharing your story.

My uncle proudly wore the presidential citation as a member of 3 RAR for his entire military career. He had a mural of the Australian engagement with the Chinese at kapyong. He served in Vietnam and I am incredibly proud of him. I never knew of the Canadian involvement in this engagement. Well done to the Canadians! As a fellow commonwealth nation we stood and stand together.

My dad was there. In my own career I met a marine who got through the gap. He hugged me and wasn’t ashamed to shed a tear! He insisted I give his name to my dad and tell thank you. Thanks dad.
I was born in July 27th. Same date when the peace treaty between North Korea and South Korea was signed. 26,000 Canadians served in Korean War, and thanks to them and many others who made the ultimate sacrifice, I enjoy the wealth and abundance today as a Korean-Canadian

The Filipino stand at Yultong, the CANZUK stand at Kapyong, and the especially the British/Belgian/Luxembourg stand at the Imjin River combined into a heruculean effort that saved all of South Korea. If not for these lions among men then the world would be a different place today

My grandfather Frank Pickell served during Korea war as part of Canada naval operations as well and it's about time that we did show Canada naval operations during Korea war and I know other vets that where in Korea as well. Thank to Canada veterans who served Korea and UN is still obsolete when comes to its original mandate from the San Francisco treaty of 1945

The New Zealand artilery was not set up to assist the Australians in time for the fight..they fought with no artillery or close air support and took the brunt of the attack all by themselves

The Australians had no air support or artillery support - the Canadians did - the Australians were attacked first and fought until their ammunition ran out - fighting hand to hand with bayonets - then they withdrew - no air or artillery support at all - the Chinese followed them up, thinking they had an easy prey now, instead the Australians formed up in front of the British Manchesters, getting resupply and offering resistance - the Chinese declined the invitation and instead headed off to the Canadian area - the artillery was now working and air support was available - The Chinese who attacked the Canadians were the SAME Chinese who had been fighting the Australians for over 30 hours - they were tired and shattered!

The Canadian PPCLI also ran out of ammunition, fighting hand to hand, as my father-in-law, who was in the unit told me, with the Chinese threatening to overrun their position, called in the artillery (twice) on themselves. They were the last part of the battle that started with the Australian's brave stand against overwhelming odds. Harry had nothing but praise for the Aussies, Kiwis and Filipinos. Totally disappointed in the Yanks. Said there was "too much democracy" in their forces. "Couldn't trust them in WW2 or Korea to get a latrine dug, nevermind hold a position".
@@davidgale7384 P P did NOT run out of ammo at all.aksi there was almost NO hand to hand fighting...the N Z artillery destroyed the Chinese attacking UO hill against the Canadians...the SAME Chinese who had been fighting the Australians for a day and a half non stop. The Canadians also had air support and resupply...the Australians had NO artillery support...NO air support and NI resupply and had Tibetans and take it....outnumbered 10,000 to 700 by FRESH troops.

No one is taking credit from 3 RAR when telling a story about Canadians made by Canadians. You sound like your have an inferiority complex very similar to most of the Filipino commentators.
I understand that this is a Canadian perspective of the battle, but this video really underplays the involvement of the Australians, who fought the most intense parts of the battle with no artillery or air support, and were so close to being overrun that they had to resort to the use of their bayonets. Make no mistake; Canada was incredibly important in the victory at Kapyong, but more than anything it was an Australian battle.
You know, that there could never be any possibility of any disrespect afforded to the RAR, Never, and our KIWIs....You were always integral.
It was our battle all, and we all did this together.
This is only one unit's story...My old one, when I, was much later, also a 2 PPCLI.

..early 90's, met an ornery old prospector, helped him set up his small portable diamond drill way out in the bush. He told me about his time at Kapyong, when he was in the Princess Pats...he said he went thru 5 boxes of grenades in one night...

My uncle who served in WW2, volunteered for Korean service but was turned down due to the injuries sustained, in Holland. My nephew served two tours in Afghanistan as a member of the 3rd Battalion PPCLI.
Sir you lived to tell the story on that horrible day. You are the shown one for the living by God. And the ones that didn't make it their souls are in Heaven.

Thank you to my dad, who was one of those 24 boys of Mike Levy's. Gwylym (Bill) White. He went to Korea as a boy but after seeing the horror, he came back a man. Like the rest, he never spoke of it and we only learned a little through a documentary the History Channel did, with him and 3 others " War Story". How these soldiers were treated by Canadian government was despicable: they were not to wear their uniforms when they came home as it wasn't a war- it was peacekeeping. Yet Truman awarded them the Citation. And the South Korean President sent them congratulatory letters. Canada? Only the soldiers that were alive received, a piece of paper from Harper's government acknowledging their involvement. Big deal. It reminded me of a sports day participation ribbon in elementary school.
Exactly my father is Joseph Niles he has a video on the site but they did nothing to properly honour these men. My father told me that Ottawa refused to give them supplies most of them had improper uniforms they didn’t want the black soldiers to enlist. One day

My father-in-law was in the unit who had to call in the artillery on it's position... An amazing man, D Day to the gates of Bergen Belsin, then Kapyong.... Passed away at 95 two years ago.

the u.s. wasn't involved in this war just commonwealth nations they provided artillery to the south when they had war with north the u.s only provided a prize for the Canadians they try to insert themselves in everything just to be important there not

What unit was the artillery from? I learned that the Utah 213th artillery was also in that battle if im not mistaken. Just curious if they were the ones sending the artillery shells.
Yes, the 213th was supporting, but it was the 16 NZFR (Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery) that was asked to shell Levy's position.
They held the line against the night.

Kapyong is still incredibly important to the 3rd Battallion here in Australia today. Korea is what made them one of if not the most decorated infantry unit in the Army.
3RAR to this day commerate Kapyong Day on April 24th. To them it's even more significant than ANZAC Day on the 25th.
The combined arms formation built around 3RAR is known as Battlegroup Kapyong.

My uncle was a corporal in 3rar in Korea. Not sure if he was in this battle. He was wounded when he tripped a mine in an unmarked us minefield. He ended up becoming an RSM .

Canadian casualties were 12 killed 35 wounded. Chinese 1,000-5,000 killed and many more wounded, over 2,000 Chinese killed on the summit of Hill 677 by artillery alone.
In a Korean War documentary, an American veteran said he was greeted by ONE person when he returned home from Korea. Understandable.

Sorry but I cant resist 04:21 he said the Lee-Enfield was from 1914, but the SMLE is from 1904 and designed in 1903 which is just a short version of the MLE of 1895, so its realy a Victorian Rifle in Post War usage

Maybe no individual was deemed qualified to get it. It's a medal they don't hand out too easily. The upside could mean a very high standard across the board. Especially since I suppose a number of them went in on the back of ww2.

My Grandad was in the RN in Korea. I joined the RAN in 2006. Bunch of Tough dudes back then. EX LS RAN.
I hope that old timer also thinks about that border between North and South and how they held that line. That border is in large part thanks to those brave Canucks. Soldiers like that are the reason I still proudly display the maple leaf on all my vehicles and packs and gun bags.
If you've read this far is a couple other not so well known facts about the Canadian military. There is a movie about this called The Devil's Brigade, I myself have never seen it, I know about it because I watched the scene from it when I was searching for the song Scotland the brave. Anyway that was the nickname of the first Anyway that was the nickname of the first Special Service Force from World War II. It was a unit that consisted of top us and Canadian soldiers which were specially trained in certain tactics. A few years later the first Special Forces Unit was formed, which I believe later became Delta Force. The red Arrowhead they use for their airborne is actually the US Canada badge that they used for the first special service Force, the unit that is credited as the first actual Special Forces Unit that paved the way for the specific and special training and duties for nearly all the special forces in the USA and Canada.
Most War and history Buffs know about the German Stormtroopers but what a lot of them don't know was they actually stole those tactics after seeing and fighting against the Canadians at the battle of Somme, the Canadians were first called Stormtroopers by the Germans before the Germans made the decision to have a stormtrooper unit on every Battlefront.
Hundreds of years ago military's dreaded the sound of bagpipes if they were on the wrong side of them, Scotsman were known as some of the toughest Warriors to ever fight. The east coast of Canada was actually settled by Scotsman, that's why people from Newfoundland have an accent, that accent actually derives from a Scottish accent. Military-wise Canada in Scotland have always been fairly tight and after forming the Scottish 16th battalion ( a battalion whether they were Canadian or Scottish that demanded they have pipes when they go into war ) the Canadian Forces to this day still use bagpipes and Scotland the brave is still a song that the Canadian military plays and uses.
And what I love about it, is that in World War I if you heard those pipes it wouldn't matter which military it is, Canadian or Scottish, it was a really bad thing if you were against them. I talk about that Stormtrooper bit because before that the Canadian military hadn't really made a name for itself, after that they were feared, and I just love the idea of the enemy hearing the pipes and shitting themselves knowing that Scotsman and Canadians are coming their fucking way

Philippines is also a volunteer there the Filipino brave soldiers who fought 40000 communist Chinese and north Korean versus 1000+ of Filipino soldiers.They don't let the reds come near to them that lead to reds 7000+ deads and 24 of casualties for Filipinos.That event we need to recognized
