- As the national lockdown continues, I take a look at at the techniques, tips and tricks that underpin birds in flight photography. The video highlights the importance of the six S's: Settings, Skill, Set-up, Study, Style and Story and you'll see more flight shots from my Sony A7R4 and Canon 5DSR.

the BEST on youtube.
Many show LARGE birds as way of showing what they can do.
BUT you are the only one showing small birds.
THAT'S THE REAL birds in flight shots
Appreciated!
Your photography is fantastic!! Your shots are equal or better than some photographers that live or visit in the tropics. Tropical birds seem to have so much more intense colors that really get amplified when photographed. All I'm saying is that you really do justice to the birds you select to shoot.
Thanks Paul! I’m interested in the more local Western Palearctic species, but maybe I’ll go tropical one day. Thanks for watching!
Good Tips. Beautiful images. Loves them all. :)👍👍👍👍👍
I have referred several friends to this video so I don't have to say anything... 😎 Plus, I'm doing them a favor. All of these great points are key - well done. My fave three: (1) Be patient; it takes time to hone your skills to get where you want to go - months and even years. (2) Instead of getting frustrated when you miss, which can be understandable, smile when it doesn't work out - remember how lucky you are, where you are, and that you're going to get another chance; (3) Success rates are low; live with it, keep on keeping on! Keep up the great work, Phil; love your inspirational images...
Thanks very much Mike…you should be my agent 😃
Thanks Phil Awesome Video. I love shooting Birds in flight or anywhere. Thanks again. From Dayton, Ohio USA
My pleasure Jimmie! Thank you for watching!
Your photos of birds in flight are great and the Sony body is why 👍
This video was produced before I had the Sony A1 and most of the flight shots shown in it were taken with the Canon 5DSR, but the A1 is amazing for BIF shots.
Two more S's from my side.
Superb and Subscribed 👍
Amazing video!
Thank you so much!
Great video and I am sure this will help me in my BIF shots.
That’s brilliant to hear Zoe

Thanks for sharing your amazing talent, Phil. Those are absolutely stunning photos! I enjoy spending trying to get BIF photos here in Minnesota. It's definitely a fun challenge. Thanks much for the tips, you have a new subscriber. 🕊
Thank you for your very kind comments Kirk and thanks for subscribing. Good luck with the BIF shots!
Thanks Phil; I greatly enjoyed your knowledgeable tutorial and the superb pictures!
Many thanks!
I find that a certain amount of upper body training actually helps considerably with my skill ability in the field. I do curls and bench presses with dumbbells. Nothing crazy, but it helps a lot when holding my heavy lens for a long time. Keeps my panning smoother. Never knew that I was going to have to work out to be a photographer.
Mobility and strength very important with those big lenses
Great advice Phil. I find myself referring back to my shooting days and shoot on the half breath. Thanks for your wisdom!
That’s another useful technique...providing good balance. Thanks for watching!
Breathtaking photographies! Thanks to share your techniques.

Another great video Phil, very informative. BIF photography is something I want to try more and as you say practice makes better images! I have been practicing on the local Mallards to try to improve my technique, so thank you for the tips. I love your shot of the Egret having a poo, yesterday I narrowly missed being shat on by a Cormorant that I didn't realize was in the tree almost right above me! I was concentrating so much on photographing the birds on the pond I didn't see it, a lucky escape!
You dodged the bullet so to speak. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos...lockdown is rather constraining...would prefer to make videos out in the field. Thank you for your positive feedback!
Excellent, thanks.
👍
One of the best advices for bird photography ever seen.
Best wishes Phil
Very kind words! Thank you!
Great as usual Phil.
Than you Colin
Phil - absolutely stunning photos, capturing beautiful creatures... and your presentation here gives hope to an impatient grumpy guy who is much interested in learning better techniques. So, your 6S discussion was quite beneficial. Best to you sir, and as new subscriber will be gaining hopefully better "keepers"!
Thank you for watching and for your feedback…wishing you lots of keepers!
In a word - Awesome.
Thank you Martin!
Great presentation. I like the six S's concept. With the advent of Covid, I switched from aviation to birds and it is a whole different game indeed. Lots to learn and perfect. Using a Canon 5DsR and the newer Canon R5 is helpful but that skill set is the set up for success. Thanks again and all the best.
Thank you! A good luck with the new genre of photography!
wonderful fotos! thank you for this video!
Thank you!
Thanks for those practical and easy to follow tips.
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
awesome video, I liked that you spoke slowly and explained the 6 S's. I could understand. I have watched other videos but yours was the best as far as information and communication.I liked the beginning joke. thank you!

Wow, such a much information on this video. Tanks a lot 🙏
Cheers
Excellent video... love yout work.
Thank you!
Brilliant Phil.
Thanks Jim...appreciated!
Well done. You have reinforced what I have learned so far as well as enriched my understanding by providing useful additional detail and by introducing some new factors which will certainly help even more. I'm an amateur enthusiast and your skill point on how difficult it can be to raise the lens and quickly see the bird through it was one of my biggest challenges. I found that aviation photography where the planes arrive/depart frequently has vastly improved my skill in this regard.
Thank you for the positive feedback skip. Keep on practicing!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 such a great explanation...glad i found this🙏🏻
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!

Thanks. Very useful tips.

Awesome video, amazingly helpful hints and beautiful images! Now I must move from where I live to a place birds do also. We mostly have Chaffinches and all kind of sparrows. The more coloured ones hide in the forest and panning in the woods isn’t fun 😜
I'm happy to your infomative video
Thank you!
Thank you Phil, wonderful information. Hello from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA!

Hi Phil. Here in Ontario Canada I have been an avid bird photographer. You have created a video with so many useful tips to get me able to photograph BIF. I took many notes and I will be referring to them often in future, as I head out to a photography session.
Brilliant to hear Jean and good luck with your BIF portfolio. Not wishing to over-promise I might try to produce a little pamphlet on my tips and tricks! Happy snapping!
