If my grandmother had wheels, she woulda been a bike is one of the most clever and well crafted jokes of all time. Impeccable timing. Better than most comedians these days 😂
I’ve just discovered Gino’s cooking series and I couldn’t love him more. He’s hysterical & cute as can be. These segments show his personality perfectly. He makes me proud to be an Italian 🇮🇹🤌
Can anyone explain why they laugh so hard at the grandmother bike joke? I get how it's funny for us italians to hear that phrase translated like that, but not why it got such a reaction from the english people lol
I think it's just the comparison. Sort of like any thing can be something different if you mess it up, a carbonara with ham becomes a pasta with ham but that doesn't make it a carbonara. My grandmother with wheels becomes a vehicle but it doesn't make her a bike
Not a common joke here, and unexpected stuff is really the crux of comedy. A lot of British humor is in the delivery though, and his delivery was about as perfect as it could be, very dry with a straight face and serious voice - which us brits love for some reason. Professional british comedians are generally excellent at timing and that unexpected dry delivery. Bob Mortimer & Lee Mack are excellent examples of that british timing and delivery which can be make things funny when they aren't even "jokes". As a contrast comedian Joe Lycett is more like "American style" comedy, his jokes are very much in the punchline normally. They still get laughs, but there is something about the very unexpected dry delivery that catches you off guard sometimes and makes things way more funny. Thanks for attending my ted talk

here to clarify the iconic "if my grandmother had wheels.." in italy is very often used, he takes it and translate word by word in english.
In Poland we use "a moustache".
"If my grandma had a moustache she would be a granddad"
A thousand people have already done this
we use the exact same phrase in Greece as well :)
Actually - it was an original scotty line from a startrek movie
I'm Australian and I've heard that expression in English before.

- it was random
- the absurd imagery of a sweet grandma with wheels for arms
- deadpan delivery
- timing of the joke, nobody was prepared for that
