Oh... Bankside next week - Looking forward to that. I have lots of connections to the south side of the river. My maternal Grandfather owned the newspaper/tobacconist/sweet shop that was on the south side of Southwark Bridge before and during WWII. I even spent a few years in the late 1980's working on the top floor of the building (City Gate House) that is now the Motability Operations location (22 Southwark Bridge Road) that was next door to my Grandfathers shop. My mother used to play with her school friends in and around Southwark Cathedral and the market in the 1920's and 30's.
I want to second the recommendation that you do an oral history project. Your insights and experiences would be invaluable to future historians. Thanks for answering viewer questions, it was very interesting.
Hi, John! I was always intrigued by the bricked up doors and outlines of stone doorways in Edinburgh closes, and mused about producing a booklet called “Lost Doors”. You occasionally include a shot or two of a lost door along your walks. Any chance of a short video of Lost Doors of London? You featured lost advert signs once.
would love a samuel pepys tour...need to read his book which has been on my bookshelf for years...i wandered around london city homeless for a couple of years so enjoy your church tours etc... popped in from time to time to many of these....to look in but didnt know what i was looking at the time....oh and more pubs mentioned....please....love your videos...

Hi John forgot to mention a few things, Morden park has a Roman or earlier barrow.quite close to the route of stane st .tooting Broadway station (citizen smith),the crossroads either side of stane st ie Garrett lane and mitcham lane were used as blocking point by the Saxons against any Danish army that would head south out of London using the old stane st.

The lost river of Walthamstow needs to be looked at again because at the bottom of the Bisterne ave because behind the houses of fifield road the railway run in a deep cut so the river can’t run that way. And when Wood st floods it always by the station.
Another very interesting video, some people had some great suggestions. I look forward to you Southwark video(s) as my wife and I often walk along from Waterloo to Tower Bridge and beyond. Also Stane St would be of interest having grown up around Morden and Wimbledon. Keep up the good work!
London is a big city, so there are a lot of places to visit, a lot of theme of walk. I am walking in Moscow and I don't know how much time I need to see it all 😊

The post-Roman London answer would have been mine as well! The thought of wandering streets full of semi-ruinous buildings and roads (only semi, because of course people were still living there after the Romans left, why wouldn't they?) just gives me a frisson of...I'm not sure what, but it's just an idea that haunts me a bit.
Buildings must have been repurposed to some extent by the early church - maintaining the site of St Pauls and so on. Maybe the Moors of Moorfields just not good enough for farming compared to Belgravia
Hi John, I did an interesting series of walks in search of sites damaged by bombing during WW 1. It’s an interesting bit of overlooked history around the City, West End, up into North East London and south of the river too.

@@julierogers1155 yes, that correct. Mostly Zeppelin raids but there are a few locations hit by German bombers ( one a hotel in Southampton Row).

A few things I'd like to see: Huguenot, Quaker, Jewish, Puritan London. When did they arrive (expelled/returned.) I've been studying the Bills of Mortality, with the 129 parishes, but what about these 'outsider' groups? In the 17th Century the St Giles Rookery had a lot of Irish Catholics, did they have churches? (When I look for this information it usually says something like Huguenots started arriving in the 16th century and there's a Huguenot church in Soho (that wasn't established until two hundred years later.)
Contemporaries. I was excited to learn that before the Civil War, while serving in Parliament, Oliver Cromwell lived in St Giles in the Fields, during the Commonwealth John Milton lived in St Giles Cripplegate (Barbican) and translated government letters of George Downing. So it would be really interesting to know who lived at the same time, where did they live, did they cross paths, and where did they cross paths?
Execution sites. These moved around a bit. Also who's head was staked where? (I can almost see Cromwell's skull glaring down from Westminster Palace.)
And what would be interesting is how London grew. What was still countryside until when? What was it used for? And the course of the Commonwealth defensive wall/berm. Anything left of it? streets that followed its course, any extent 'bumps?'
Fictional places and why. Why did John LeCarré put his intelligence service in Cambridge Circus? Why did J.K. Rowling put Cormoran Strike's detective agency on Denmark Street, Why did Ben Aronovich put The Folly on Montague Sreett? (My son and I stayed at the Astor Place Hostel there and I was thrilled that it could be the place. )
London for the most part is just a modern city, with a lot of good but bog standard modern office buildings... but when you know the history of course it all springs to life.
Greenwich is always interesting. What confused me as a Yank with my U.S. iPhone. Standing on the Prime Meridian at the Greenwich Observatory, it didn't read 0°0'. 00 was off in a copse of trees. (Later I learned that the North American Geoid for mapping is just a bit different. What about GPS from different other parts of the world? Where does Glonass think it is?
Think about Boudica for a moment. She burned London to the ground. Putting up her statue is a bit like an Osama bin Laden sculpture in New York City. I remember seeing and thinking, cool, wow and then remembering what she did in London... a bit inexplicable. Shakespeare? I'm all in. There's a book "Shakespeare's Metrical Art" by George T. Wright that raises his status even more. Between Chaucer and Shakespeare's generation most English poetry was not at all good.
I always find the Liberties interesting and fun.
St Paul's 99% of anything about St Paul's is fire, Wren, 35 years.... I've never seen an aesthetic analysis of it. My son suggested we go see it. I grumbled, it's £18 and no photography. But okay. Then as we walked across Millennium Bridge I took a good look at what until then had just been a navigation point. I thought it's use of massing and negative space was really remarkable. Up until then, I think, the Baroque was mostly just pack it in, or space it evenly as was the Classical sources. Even Michelangelo. I mentioned this to two architects one time and they just sort of looked at me for a minute and changed the subject. Maybe not your channel. (I think a redesign and different spacing of the elements would make this apparent.)
Hi John, love the books and your channel. I was going to suggest Brighton too, but someone beat me to it. I lived there for 5 years back in the 80's whilst working as both a post and dustbin man. I have spent many hours trapsing the streets there. You will find plenty to fill an episode with. Look forward to seeing one in the future.

I've been exploring (online as I now live in NZ) what the Edgeware Road and surrounding areas used to look like before the Westway was built. I have so many happy memories of living around there especially Lisson Grove in the late 80's. Would love a walk around there and Church Street market too.

Hi John, I watch most of your videos when I can. When was that David Hepworth article in the Radio Times ? I've been buying it every week for over 40 years, and I must have missed reading that one. I still remember David from the OGWT years back, and he does a really good music podcast at the moment. I remember chatting to Bob Harris at Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth concert at the Crystal Palace Bowl back in 70s or 80s. Procul Harem were the support band. Cheers!

Long thought a tunnel - built at the time of the Victoria Line - goes fm the US residence in Regents Park to Euston, the GPO Tower, Bush House (BBC), Buck Palace, Victoria Station and under the river to the US Embassy
If you want to do a Saturday walk we have a £5 fundraiser for a homeless aid project in Wimbledon . covering five faith centres (Mosque/Synagogue/Buddhist Temple/CofE Parish Church and Hindu meeting place ( about 6k steps and its not flat) Sat 13th April 11am Wimbledon Station.
Also London to Dartford is 48 minutes by train and you wouldn't have to leave Dartford station. Just stand on the platform where Jagger and Richard met, say your piece, and return to London.
From the very centre of London, amongst the hustle and bustle, where would be the best place to escape for a walk with a real outdoors or remote feel, Epping Forest?

John, do not get confused between South Bank, Bankside - boundary Bargehouse Street or conveniently Blackfriars Road, and Borough - the boundary is the St Mary Overy Dock with the Golden Hind replica.
If you include Borough Market mention the point that the only leasehold mainline railway tracks are those over the market. Also if you cover Southwark Cathedral, ignore the foundation myths the church promotes.

You're in my sister's hood now. London Bridge station and Southwark cathedral. Makes me miss my visits there.
Abandoned Roman London? I'm dubious about that, too, but what was likely to have been happening is stone buildings being dismantled to use the stone elsewhere. There wouldn't have been many stone buildings in Roman London, but there were certainly some, and the walls were certainly of stone. So free stone, come and get it while you can! Often nicely dressed stone, too. Churches of the 7th and 8th centuries were sometimes built in stone, which could well have been recycled.
If you say "Glyndower" that would be an Anglicisation of "Glyndwr", but a Welsh person might find it passable. "W" is a vowel in Welsh. How did the name "Tiwdwr" get Anglicised? As "Tudor", that's how. "Tudower" would have been more accurate, I think.

So I have a question about a road name....I have seen a video where you are on Green Lanes in Highgate. I know of a Green Lanes in Seven Kings.
Why is the name Green Lanes plural...and not just Green Lane...I dont kmownof other Lanes that are pluralised.... Or are there just the 2 of them?
