Only 21, but I fondly remember coming home and watching Sammy, Wood, Zambrano and others on WGN. Not to mention listening with my dad to WGN radio cubs broadcasts. Awesome times, going to miss it!
Although I’m a White Sox fan the ending with the different eras was bitter sweet because I remember watching the Sox on WGN, and my dad, and his dad. The cherry on top was the “So long everybody”.
Even though I’m a Sox fan, this kinda tears me up. I really agree that WGN was most known for broadcasting Cubs baseball. And they did have a history with the Sox too. I think the Sox started in 1968 I think. And when they said, “In the late 50s the Sox finally won their division,” that was during the Cubs-only run of WGN Sports. Almost 3 years later and I still can’t believe it’s gone. I remember watching Sox games all the time on WGN, and some Cubs games too. My childhood was the final 10 years of Hawk Harrelson. I agree with Steve Stone, it was a great run.
1st time seeing this. To think of all the people that would run home from school 🙋, to catch the last few innings or if you'd happen to be sick and be home to watch the game. 😔
It's kind of like when in 1998, WPIX here in NYC, which was WGN-TV's sister station, ended airing NY Yankees baseball. Well it did come back a few years ago, but it's merely slapping the PIX11 logo on everything associated with YES, the Yankees Entertainment and Sports network, their own outlet. PIX also airs some Mets games as well, and like with the Yankees, it's covering the SNY Sports Net NY logo. Though a Yankees fan, I am glad that WGN-TV in its 71 year iconic history in Chicago broadcasting, got to see the Cubs finally win it all in 2016. And I love that "Chicago Cubs, est. 1948 WGN 9" logo. As a fan of broadcasting I love to see stations bring up their old logos and icons. And in summation...HEY HEY and HOLY COW!
But at least the Yankees and Mets are on free to air broadcasts through WPIX right? I hope the Cubs get back to that with WGN, it's just tradition for us. And from what I hear still not everyone gets the Cubs new network
As a kid at the bottom of Alabama i watched WGN with my grandpa. As an adult i have never been ti Chicago but i watched or recorded all WGN broadcasts through the years and told my wife..its just something about WGN on a cloudy day that IS baseball. The nostalgia, the hometown feel. Cubs fans are all over the country because of WGN and I am still heartbroken in 2022. Watching the local commercials during the broadcast in old red dirt Alabama will always be a found memory.
The Chicago Cubs are not on WGN-TV, as this marks the end of an era for WGN Sports after 72 seasons broadcasting Cubs games over the air. Thanks for the memories and "so long everybody."
Sad that my father didn't live long enough to see the Chicago Cubs finally win the World Series in 2016. Equally sad that the Cubs are now in the domain of subscription TV. Thanks for the memories, WGN-TV. ⚾
Not a Cubs or Braves fan but growing up, I used to check the TV Guide and see what WGN or TBS were broadcasting because they always had baseball on. Sad to see them both gone.
It's okay, Scott. Things like computer recording software don't always run as well as most of us would hope. As far as my comments go on the Cubs parting ways with WGN, although it's really sad to see a 71-year broadcast relationship end, this goes to show that professional sports teams (except of course for NFL teams) want more exposure on Cable and Satellite TV rather than continuing to air games locally over-the-air. Pretty soon, there won't be any local sports broadcasts over-the-air at all, although there will still be some national OTA broadcasts. I guess that's Money Talks for ya'.
I agree with you, Steve. Even worse, there's still a huge number of folks in Chicago that don't even have access to Cable or Satellite TV, and now they'll have to shell out some cash in order to watch their team play. Hopefully Cubs fans won't be in the same mess the Dodgers fans have had to go through for 6 years and counting as far as watching games go.
@@SABMashupMuseum Yes!! I find it kind of ridiculous. I want to watch Cubs games, but it’s even more $ to have to dish out. Prime, Netflix, Roku, Xfinity (Marquee isn’t included). Life-long Cubs fan and now I can’t even watch the games. 😑 So much greed
So many great memories of Cubs baseball on WGN and, so many of them it's too numerious to mention from Jack Brickhouse to Vince Lloyd to Lou Boudreau to Harry Caray. A lot of them were in that great summer of 1998. Thanks WGN for the memories.
5 years ago, it came to an end, the end of an era, Cubs on WGN, it still pains me now in 2024. September 27, 2019 was a Friday, and September 27, 2024 is a Friday.
I watching Chicago cubs baseball with my late grandfather in Columbus Georgia hearing Hall of Fame baseball voice Harry Carey especially during home games at Wrigley field singing take me out to the ballgame to quote Harry Carey it might be it could be is it a home run Cubs win Cubs win holy cow
WGN made me a Cubs fan for National League. I'm a Twins fan first being in Minnesota but I saw the Cubs on TV more than the Twins because most Twins home games were Pay Per View telecasts in the Early-Mid 90s.
One thing they missed is the first satellite broadcast in 1962. Too bad GN Tv or radio wasn’t broadcasting the World Championship season. A piece of my childhood died that day. That’s progress.
Glad their long-awaited championship came while WGN was still televising them - would have really svcked to have never had a championship season and then have them finally win after they didn't show the games anymore.
Rip WGN Sports. It's really the end of an era
And RIP Chicago Cubs Baseball on WGN Chicago 9 (1948-2019), your legacy will never, ever be forgotten! So long everybody!
Why?

Thanks WGN for being on my cable system in 1984 many people here in New Orleans are cubbie fans because of WGN.
WGN Superstation?
@@hectordelacruz8137 yep.
To quote the late, great John Madden: “They can take the Cubs away from WGN, but they can’t take away the memories.”
That's a paraphrasing.
Wgn is the main reason why I’m a cubs fan from Detroit

I can't believe it. What can I say. The Cubs are no longer on WGN. Disbelief. I never thought I'd see it.

"So long everybody" that was gut wrenching.

Two institutions gone and both after 72 years. RIP Dad and WGN sports.
This reminds me of when Braves baseball games left TBS in favor of the league wide package and when MNF left ABC after the '05 season.
And when Bozo the Clown left WGN after 40 years.
and now at age 72, Tom Skilling has left WGN in 2024.
We can't wait until next year on WGN anymore. :(
