Now let me explain the story in this MV: "Honey" is another one of Lay's solo English songs and it's in English because it was a follow up to his previous album Namanana. You heard Lay listening to his song "Give Me a Chance" on his earbuds at the beginning of the "Honey" MV and that is one of his songs and MVs from his Namanana album.
When it comes to EXO, one thing you have to keep in mind is that absolutely everything they are involved in is connected to their concept and storyline, including a majority of the members' solo work. So, the story in Lay's "Honey" MV is just another piece of EXO's story.
To explain the story in "Honey," some fan theories say that the fact that the weather lady on the TV is talking about the changing weather and the pressure system, could be a nod to the unsettled conditions within EXO's current storyline and how currently the members are struggling to distance themselves from the Red Force, etc. And because you hear her speaking with a British accent this might be a clue to tell us where Lay is right now within EXO's storyline, and it might explain why the other EXO members seem to be sending him messages -- as we see with the bee and the blackout, etc.
If you follow EXO's storyline than you know all the members of EXO have superpowers and they are on a mission to protect humanity from the evil and corruption caused by the Red Force. Most of EXO's powers have weather and nature elements that could be affected by and effecting the weather around the world.
Some theories say, the mechanical bee has been sent by either one or more of the EXO members or it could be sent by the Red Force. The bee is either a message or a warning sent to Lay (although, I am not really sure what that exact message is.) And I think, the fact that the bee passes through the glass, might be Kai using his power of teleportation to allow it to pass through it -- or more like, transported to the other side of the glass. And then the lights in the entire city go out as if in a blackout, which I think might be Baekhyun using his power, which is the ability to control light, or Chen, who has the ability to control electricity. Plus, as Lay's power counterpart, it makes sense that Baekhyun would feel the pull to want to find Lay. Chen is a member of EXO-M along with Lay, so he would also have a heightened reason to want to find Lay. EXO needs Lay to help protect them and to heal all the things that are going on around them. And Kai's whole mission is to find the other EXO members and bring them back together to stop the Red Force.
Also, I think it's interesting that Lay, as a member of EXO, has the power of healing, and honey is known for its natural homeopathic healing and medicinal properties. And in parts of the MV we see Lay submerged in a pool of honey, almost as if he might be using it to recharge and gain strength. I have no idea what this all means, but I just thought it was an interesting parallel.
If you notice the part of the choreography where Lay is standing in the middle and the dancers are all round him as he spins around, I am pretty sure that is supposed to be depicting a flower as it blooms which is what is attracting the "bee" to him. :D
On the flip side, the story in the song also is saying that Lay is a bee and he is looking for his "honey" that's why he is in a honeycomb/beehive or in a pool of honey the whole time. I think what he is saying in the lyrics is that "Be my honey and be available to me when I want you, but 'please don't catch no feelings' because you have to know that we can have fun together, but I can't invest all my time and energy into you the way I should if we were in a relationship." In other words, he is too busy and too popular to be exclusive right now. He needs to keep the girl at a safe distance for both of their emotional safety, etc.
This also plays into the theory within EXO's storyline that the "girl" is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members of EXO are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all of EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl. Which could possibly explain the lyrics in "Honey." If you think of the girl as the heart, it might explain why Lay "wants her" but needs to keep her at a distance to protect her, etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life, you begin to see even more parallels to EXO's story and even more ways to connect even more of it all together.
Did you notice the spinning honeycomb in the middle of the MV? That spinning honeycomb is a nod to the fact even as a solo artist, he is still part of EXO. The hexagon is EXO's symbol and if you pay close attention at that spinning honeycomb you will see that it says EXO in the middle as it spins. So this is Lay's and SM's way of making sure that we never forget that he is part of EXO and that even if he isn't able to work with the group, he still makes sure to show just how important they are to him.
As you can see, EXO's MVs are more complex than what you see on the surface. However, often -- although the stories in the MVs are loosely based on the lyrics -- many times the story in the MV and the lyrics in the song are two separate things. The lyrics don't necessarily always go with the story in the MV. Often EXO's songs are about being in love with a girl and wanting to be with her, but the story in the MV is about them working to complete their mission and to fight against the Red Force, etc. Everything EXO does has many layers and it has multiple means and messages, including any of the member's solo work. There are always two levels to every EXO song, one designed to grab the casual listener that has no idea about EXO's storyline, and one that, if you look deeper, you discover has hidden meanings and messages that all connects to EXO's mission here on Earth.
For any of us that know EXO, and especially Lay, "Honey" is kind of exactly what we would expect from him. This is just the sexy, cool kind of song and amazing choreography that Lay is known for. All the guys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him. If you look at the credits for this album, Lay, once again wrote and composed and produced this song and the whole album himself. And that is why he is known as China's national producer.
Lay is one of the top dancers in the industry and it's his solo work where he really gets to showcase what an amazing dancer he really is. He is the main dancer of EXO-M and he is the counterpart to Kai's role in EXO-K. Kai and Lay are both main dancers, lead vocalists and sub-rappers in their EXO units, so it's no surprise that Lay is an amazing dancer. That is why most of the time when you see solo dance breaks in EXO concerts you will see Lay and Kai dancing together because they are 2 of the top dancers in the industry and they were meant to fill similar roles in their respective sub-units in EXO.

Yixing said he came up w/the word "namanana" after "hakuna matata" (no worries) and to be used and thrown into any situation. The inspiration for the Namanana concept and MV was inspired by The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a journey of self-discovery and to pursue your dreams by following what your heart desires.

omg yes I love how you talk about like the connotation of sheep in certain cultures on how people look at them! yixing took that and changed it because he mentioned once an interview about how a sheep can kill a person when it’s mad since there’s an aggressiveness in them
That’s what he wanted to show to people like he’s just not like small baby sheep who’s innocent pure and naive (like how most people paint him) because he’s stood his ground and he has his own path that he want to walk through and figure it out himself

You asked me to explain the story in the MV, well here you go: "Namanana" is the title track on Lay's first English album which was released in 2018, and it is his American debut as he makes his crossover into the U.S. music industry. Every Mandarin song on this album has an all English version, and like everything that Zhang Yixing (Lay) does, it was all wrote, composed, and produced by him, including the English lyrics. Yes, I am sure he had consultants who helped him find the right words in English, but if you know him, you know that he is a perfectionist and there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself.
When it comes to Lay's solo work he does it all, and it's also all financed by him -- this MV was one of the most expensive Chinese produced MVs at the time, costing around $1 million to make. However, Lay broke his record last year when he released his "Lit" MV which cost more than $1.4 million to produce.
Because Lay was not allowed to promote in Korea at this time because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, SM Entertaiment found a way to promote him as part of EXO's storyline by partnering with him to release English songs and to tie his MVs in with EXO's story. Everything EXO does, including several of Lay's solo releases -- such as "Sheep," "Namanana" and "Honey" -- all tie into the fact that he is a member of EXO. It's SM's way of making sure that even though he might not be able to work with the members, that they show fans that his storyline and presence as part of EXO is still really important to Lay and SM.
The lyrics of the song actually make a lot of sense if you know the story behind the song and if you follow EXO's storyline. As I think you know, EXO are supposed to be aliens from Planet Exo, who came to Earth to find and protect the Tree of Life from the evil Red Force. All the members of EXO have superpowers and they are on a mission to stop the Red Force from corrupting humanity and causing bad things in the word, such as war, hate and destruction of the environment, etc. EXO's MVs are kind of like a movie -- it's a movie that has been going on for the past 9 years -- since predebut -- and it has no sign of coming to an end any time soon. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including their sub-sub-unit MVs and a majority of the member's solo MVs. And because Baekhyun and Kai are involved, even SuperM's storyline -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc.
So, with that in mind, "Olay" is a war cry that is supposed to show how powerful he is and that he is in control. He is saying that the negative comments and haters can't change the narrative of his story or make him doubt the path he is on in life. It is also a metaphor for the narrative within EXO's storyline and what he has had to go through as Lay the EXO alien. As a character within EXO's story, Lay is currently trying to figure out how to put a stop to the evil and destruction that the Red Force is causing. So he is also speaking to the Red Force saying, you won't be able to defeat us. I won't let you stop us from accomplishing our goals, etc.
Also, fun fact: The pink lake you see in the MV is a real pink salt lake -- the minerals in this lake actually make the water look pink -- and they are dancing on a sandbar in the middle of the lake. The MV was filmed in Australia.
According to Lay, Namanana is a nonsensical word that is meant to be used like Hakuna Matata from the Lion King.
However, to understand the story in the MV you have to remember that Lay is a member of EXO. So fan theories believe that the "Namanana" MV is another piece of EXO's storyline and it establishes Lay's connection to EXO's story.
As mentioned before, in EXO's storyline, when you see red objects or red light this is thought to represent something to do with the Red Force and when you see blue light this represents EXO. So in the parts of the MV where you see red, this is considered moments within the story where the Red Force has control. And when you see blue, this is where Lay or EXO have the upper hand. Whenever you see purple light or purple objects, this is thought to be showing where the line between the Red Force and EXO has been blurred and they are battling each other for control -- red and blue mixed together make purple.
In EXO's "Power" MV it is thought that EXO are on Exo Planet and, before their "Obsession" MV came out, we all thought EXO was trying to get their powers back from the Red Force. The original theory was that the robot we see in "Power", which is being controlled by the Red Force, stole EXO's powers and the members had to fight to get their powers back. However, Lay is the only member who is missing in "Power" -- that MV was during the start of when he was no longer able to work with EXO. So, because Lay was unable to participate in "Power," as part of EXO's storyline, Lay was unable to collect his power orb. Originally, fan theories thought that the other EXO members must have retrieved his power orb for him and they sent him his power orb in the mail. As you saw in "Namanana" it looks as though Lay receives a package, which is thought to contain his powers.
Also in "Namanana" you see things like a pyramid which is thought to be a message sent to Lay from Kai. Kai's power is the ability to teleport and his symbol is a pyramid. We think Kai is sending Lay a message to let him know that he is searching for him and he is coming to take him back and reunite him with the other EXO members. EXO needs Lay to use his power of healing to help defeat the Red Force and to heal everything that is going wrong. EXO needs to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace in the world, and Lay is the member who could heal and fix things as EXO struggles to take down the Red Force. Kai means opening as in a door or gateway, so as the center of the group, Kim JongIn (Kai) is supposed to be the one that connects all the members together.
You also see Lay get woken up by a thunderstorm. The thunderstorm is thought to possibly be a message sent by Chen. Kim JongDae (Chen) and Lay are members of EXO-M (EXO's Mandarin Chinese sub-unit), and Chen's superpower is the ability to control thunder and lightning. So it is thought that Chen is also sending Lay some sort of message.
And at one point, you see how it looks like it all of a sudden turns from day to night. It doesn't just go dark, but it looks like something might be blocking the sun, which is thought to be caused by an eclipse. EXO's powers are controlled by the eclipse. The eclipse is where EXO summons their abilities from and that's why the majority of the stories in their MVs revolve around an eclipse of some kind or something to do with the sun and moon. And that's why a few of their comebacks and MV releases have been on days when we have had a real eclipse, or some sort of real planetary phenomenon, etc.
Some people point to the fact that in EXO's "EL Dorado," one of the lines in the song is "Got to sail, sail sail ... got to find find find ... El Dorado." And like Peter Pan with a little magic and superpowers the ship is sailing in the air in "Namanana." So this could have something to do with EXO sailing the world in search of the Tree of Life, etc. Sehun has the power to control wind, so it could be him using his power to make the ship levitate and move with the power of wind, etc. And D.O. has the power of earth or dirt which gives him super strength/force, so when you see those rocks levitating or being blown up this could be D.O. using his power as he tries to send Lay a message as well.
We are still not sure what the "flying atom" is but we know for sure that it has something to do with EXO's storyline and it will probably eventually become clearer what that is supposed to be or what it means as SM releases more of EXO's story in the future. We just have to wait and see.
Everything that any of the members of EXO are involved in is connected to their storyline, even down to the most minute of details. So nothing is ever random or done without a specific reason. Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-Ls have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all.
If you like Lay's dancing, you really need to check out his dance practice video for "Namanana." There is a reason why he is one of China's top dancers and why he is a main dancer of EXO.

Yes, Lay was born in the year of the sheep, so his birth sign is a sheep. As he says in the English lines of the song, "I'm a sheep ... The China Sheep ... be careful sheep in the neighborhood," etc. Fans also say Lay is a sheep because, although he comes off as tough and hardcore when he is on stage, performing, we all know that in reality he is very gentle and quiet and kind of shy -- so there is two sides to him, he is fluffy and soft like a sheep; but if you mess with him you're going to get the horns. :D
You should now check out Lay's "Sheep Alan Walker relift" version MV. It has a completely different vibe and the storyline within the MV is a lot darker and more closely connected to EXO's concept and storyline.
However, there are elements of the original MV, that could also be connected to EXO's storyline. For example, some think that the reason why the Sheep turns Red is because this might be showing something to do with how the Red Force is trying to control Lay. And the very last scene where you see everything on fire almost as if a bomb went off, this is also thought to be connected to EXO's storyline, and maybe even to the Alan Walker version MV storyline.
If you really want to see why Lay is considered one of the top dancers, you should check out his dance practice video for "Sheep."
Lay is known as one of the hardest working artist in the industry because he is such a perfectionist and he pretty much does it all himself. When it comes to his solo work, Lay is known for writing and composing the songs (including the rap sections), as well as producing them. he even creates all his own beats for his songs, and he takes a large part in coming up with the choreography and producing the MVs as well. Lay pretty much has a hand in all aspects of every part of every project.
I think people misunderstand Lay (Zhang Yixing) sometimes when they first see him because he often comes off as kind of aloof and standoffish and super serious, but what more people need to understand is that, if you get to know him, you will soon find it's because he is very dedicated and committed to what he does and he always wants to show his best self at all times. In reality he is kind of shy and doesn't like to have a lot of attention on himself. He is an all around personality that really is the whole package. And he is one of the kindest, nicest, sweetest, hardest working people you will ever meet. All he wants to do is take care of people. That is why in any interview he has ever done, when someone asks him about EXO, he always makes a point to say that they are his brothers and they are very important to him, if they ever need him all they have to do is ask and he will be there for them. And this is also why Lay's EXO superpower, being the ability to heal everything, is perfect because it fits his personality well. :D
