  • I visit the "Venice of Africa" or slum community of Mokoko in Nigeria - Africa's largest city. Mokoko is an area of homes built on stilts over highly polluted water that nearly 200,000 people call home. The Nigerian government essentially ignores them claiming they are squatting on the land and provides no public services. The people mainly come from Ogun state but have lived in this area for over 100 years. Ogun state borders Benin and many of the people in this community speak French and use other words commonly used in Benin like "yobo" for a white person rather than the Yoruba Nigerian word "oyinbo".
While there, I learned that ‪@IndigoTraveller‬ recently visited and set up a charity to help build an orphanage for those kids in the video. They surpassed the goal of donations raising $80K, but please visit his channel to keep updated on the project or his Instagram: / indigo.traveller

Yes it has! I saw it partially built/under construction. I also recently saw an update from another Nigerian that showed it even further along. Perhaps I will visit again soon as I travel to Nigerian often.

Those so called chiefs and all are scammers. All the money donated has not come to any notable use till now. utubers go there every time to donate and still nothing happens. 80k dollars is now about 120 million Naira. that money alone is enough to relocate even a quarter of Makoko even to dry land. scammers everywhere in the name of children. just like the rogue Nigerian governments and politicians.

I've actually been there as well. They call them both Venice of Africa, but I think Mokoko is a little more like Venice because the pathways are more narrow whereas Ganvie is wider.
