  • A video I took back in May, a special weekend out to Liverpool, in search of Northern Rail's wonderful Class 769 Flex (Class 319) units. These are basically Class 319s that have been modified to run on Diesel and 25kV AC Overhead power sources. This unit, 796456 (319456) is running on the Southport - Stalybridge service, plenty of views through the countryside, before heading through the suburbs of Greater Manchester and Manchester City.
A 4-car unit, but I have to say, much cleaner and refreshed interiors than they were as 319 units. Despite the diesel engines, the classic traction sounds from the DC Chopper and motors can still be heard, this one I found to be more prominent than 319012 of LNWR!
A nice long journey, with very restricted commentary, so you guys can enjoy the sounds and scenery. Shoutout to the Senior Conductor who was extremely welcoming of my spotting, enthusiasm and even offered me a different seat, as well as information on the 769s.
    Enjoy!

Nice to see one of these in action. Also that could allow for one of these units to be preserved in the future because they are diesel/electric bi-mode. So they could use diesel mode on heritage lines. I grew up with the Class 319's and I am glad to see these are still used. Hopefully more of these will be used by Northern and also Scotrail are trialling some of these as well mate. They are great units and way more comfortable over the modern crap in my opinion. All the best, Peter.
