You are an Angel! I have been looking for something like this for YEARS!! Your explanations and your examples were so clear and helpful! I started today having never made a typeset for anything and in one night you've taught me how!! I can not begin to thank you enough!
Oh yay! I am so glad it was helpful ☺️
thank you so much for this video! using it i made my first typeset (of a dramione fic of course) and i've just folded the signatures for the first time, and now i'm off to go make another typeset using this video - truly you're a life saver! i would never have been able to figure it all outmyself
Thank you. I have tried several typeset tutorials, and yours just made it "click" in my brain!
Oh good! I'm so glad it has clicked for you!
Thank you for your tutorial!
I finished my first typeset just following along! My headers are weird but in a quirky "This is my first one" way xD
You are AMAZING. This is the first time I’ve seen a video that hasn’t made me want to give up or tear my hair out. I haven’t printed it yet but I followed along and typeset a fic and it was actually really fun, especially the canva stuff and finding the best fonts! Thank you so so much!
Eeeeeee!!! Yay!!! I am SO happy to hear that!
@@MorriganSegdae I am having SO MUCH FUN. I've already typeset two fics I like (both very small, under 6,000 words) and now I'm just going through and typesetting all my favorites like a madwoman. Now I just have to figure out how to print them out on my printer :')
THANK YOU! This has made me so happy. I have been spending the last week trying to figure this out. You are a fanfic angel
Thank you so much for the very detailed step by step, I could cry with how much more sense it makes for me !! This tutorial is amazing
Ahhhh good! This is definitely something I wish were around when I started.
Thank you i've completed a few typesets in word that I haven't been happy with. But seeing your video and your tricks with canva designs and google docs I have now completed my first typeset I'm really happy with.
Oh I'm so glad!
THANK YOU IM GONNA CRY!!! NEVER DELETE THIS
I am excited to have found your videos. I hope you plan to make more things, your explanations make everything so simple!
Absolutely incredible tutorial! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this! I have a Mac and was trying to figure out how to use Pages, but I couldn't find any tutorials. This was the next best thing. It took me about 3 days and watching this over and over but I finally made my first typeset 😊
Is your typesetting doc something you'd ever share? It would be really helpful to see all the steps written out so I don't forget anything for future typesets
I am so glad this was helpful! And absolutely! I just tried and failed to figure out how to link it in the video description or even in a comment. It's a pdf. Can you email me at morrigansegdae@gmail.com and I'd be happy to share it with you?
@@MorriganSegdae of course! Thank you so much ☺ I will put my TH-cam name in the subject box so you know it's me 💜
@@MorriganSegdae would it be okay if I asked for the pdf to be emailed to me too?
@@k8l008 absolutely! Email me at morrigansegdae@gmail.com and I'll send it to you
This was super helpful, thanks!! 💜
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL THANKYOU FOR THISS
Do you have any examples of what it would look like printed and folded into signatures? That part is still a bit confusing for me but i have set up my first official typeset thanks to you❤❤❤thank you so much!!
underrated!! tysm!
I dont see the "whole document" option in the headers, and I'm really confused
This was *wildly* helpful!! I just finished typesetting my first fic following all of this and it looks SO good, and it only took me a couple of hours, including making a decorative cover page in Canva and making some nit-picky small changes to formatting and correcting some of the weird formatting AO3 sometimes does with italics and punctuation. Super excited to get it printed and start working on binding it!
When do you opt for a folio vs a quarto? I'm assuming a quarto is better for smaller/shorter fics?
@@lily-wx1vb yay! I'm so happy for you!
Yes, anything under like 50/60K I opt for a quarto. I like the way they look and have a cute shelf that fits them. But not always. Peter Pan by JM Barrie is 47K and I made that into a folio. It's thin but I like it.
So definitely only do small fics/books as quartos, but you can absolutely still do them as folios if you'd like.
Thank you ❤❤
Thank you! Only snag I had was when I inserted an image, it would appear on a few pages. Even if I only pasted it on one. I was trying to use it as part of the chapter heading/title. Not sure what i was doing wrong, but sidelined the idea for now.
@@RavenWood495 it sounds like your image was getting caught up in your header and that's why it started repeating on subsequent pages. I use the "behind text" option for "text wrapping" on any images I use for chapter titles. You'll have to move the text from the chapter down, but then the image won't get stuck in the header and repeat.
@@MorriganSegdae I will give it a go! Thank you!!
can you go into more detail regarding printing? I know you showed us what you use to get it to print signatures, but would it be possible for you to explain more about the printer itself and what settings you use when printing? specifically regarding folio and duplex printing? thank you!
@@Cass-k2t I can make a video about printing this week and show that process for sure. But I don't adjust any settings. I use default ones when printing. I just click duplex but that's it.
@@MorriganSegdae thank yoooouuuu also your video helped me so much you would not believe how hard it is to get this info outta google
Gosh, I love your work! I found this video super helpful
Yes! I'll post a video about that shortly. But in sum the page sizing is 5.5 by 4.25 (to print on letter). Google docs USED to have the ability to make that size but no longer. But I still have a size template saved from when that was available that I'm happy to share with you. Email me at morrigansegdae@gmail.com and I'll send you access to the doc!
@@MorriganSegdae email sent ! 💕
@@BloodyFragile double check you sent it to the right email because I have nothing in my inbox or spam 😭
@@MorriganSegdae It added a space! Sent again
I got stuck at the part where I was trying to copy and paste it to the google document. A message appears saying "Can't sync your changes. Copy your recent edits, then revert your changes." When I do that it's a blank document. It doesn't let me progress :( not sure why mybecause my google drive has a 100gb of storage.
That means you are trying to copy and paste something over the 1 million character limit. If you're going over it then you need to split into multiple books anyway. So open a second document and split.
Hi This was very usefull. Concise and easy to follow ! Thank you very much. I have one problem, how do you remove a header from one page ? the ending page, I don't want a page number on there, but I can't remove it without removing the other headers
I'm so glad it helped!
You'll have to insert another section break before that page. Headers work together in each section with only allowing the first page to be different. That's why you can't remove it without it affecting the rest of the section.
@@MorriganSegdae thank you for your answer. I managed to figure it out ! The typeset turned out alright ! I’m very happy with it, thank you so much for the tutorial!
This video is so helpful but I got stuck at the part where I finally got to copy and paste it to google document but it only gets the to 72 pages which is the first eight chapters of the fanfic.
Plz help 😭
@@animegirlhere8846 it's hard to tell without looking at it. I'm assuming you're copying from AO3. Did you click whole work and then copy all? Have you tried manually doing anything past eight chapters? Is the issue that your doc isn't letting you paste more or that your copy paste just isn't grabbing it all?
I do know that there's a character limit of a million (I think), but if you're hitting that then you need to split into multiple volumes anyway so you need a new document. That being said, 72 pages doesn't sound like you've hit the limit yet.
Hi again! Since Google Docs doesn't have a Gutter function, how would you go about adding that feature so your text isn't too close to the center fold? Thanks again for any insight!
I haven't had any issues with it being too close to the center in any of the books I've typeset and bound. I just keep my margins large enough. If you are absolutely set on a gutter, there may be a way to add it in an imposer later? Or maybe set the margins in docs to be different L/R? I haven't played around with it because I haven't run into issues not having a gutter.
So if we don't have a Part 1 page after the quote, we should have two blank pages and then chapter one?
example, I have my quote page and right after chapter 1 would start on page 5
when i add the section breaks, a blank page is automatically added before my chapter 1 page which moves chap 1 to page 6 not five.
I added a blank page after my quote page AND THEN did section breaks so now have two blank pages so that chapter 1 starts on 7
You can absolutely do that. Or you can just have no blank pages in between if you'd like. I've also done it with a quote page on an odd page and then blank and then start chapter one on another odd page.
If when you add a section break, it moves your chapter 1 to page 6, feel free to delete page 5. It should still keep the section break but then you're on the right side.
Hi, thank you for making this video! I have a question- I got all the way to the end of your tutorial and noticed that the PDF generated was only the first signature. How do I download the rest of the book, with the other signatures included? Thank you for your help!
Never mind, I figured it out! Thank you again for this amazing video!!
@@boopersnooter485 oh good! Well if anyone comes across your comment and is wondering, look for the "aggregate." That will have all signatures together 😊
Are we able to keep the original page breaks or do we need to add our own?
There won't be original page breaks when you copy from AO3 or FFN or Project Gutenberg. You will need to add your own.
@@MorriganSegdae Great thank you so much for the replies! Awesome tutorial! I’m a first timer and this made it really easy :3
I almost want to ask if you would typeset for me TT_TT I feel a little overwhelmed but I want to make it pretty for my friend.
@@darcicoore2558 I feel that. It was so overwhelming for me to start and I definitely used other people's typesets at the beginning.
I'd recommend joining Amateur Fanfic Binding on Facebook. They have a lot of shared typesets of fanfic and classics including ones I've done. Lots of other tutorials. And there's a typeset request thread to have someone do a specific typeset for you. It's a wonderful community.
