Ryuga did not pause his Dark Move. His first attempt got beat by Tsubasa's Counter Stance, and so Ryuga, thanks to his l Drago's insane staying power, utilized his Dark Move for the second time, and Tsubasa, who switched to offense the instant after he cancelled out Ryuga's first attempt, had his staying power drained by quite a margin (thanks to his successive special moves) that he was not able to counter Ryuga's second attempt at his dark move.
If y’all forgot in the next battle ryuga is able to cut down his power to match kyoya he used a weak version of his dark move to lure Tsubusa into a trap
