An Awesome Easter Weekend on the NS Pittsburgh Line - Part 5 Final (4/5/2015)

  • For Easter Sunday, I followed the Pittsburgh Line's double main along the Juniata River Valley (ex-PRR Middle Division) on my way back home. I didn't expect the train action to be busy like Good Friday and Saturday but at the end of the day action was quite busy especially when I closed towards the Harrisburg-controlled side of the Pittsburgh Line.
I began at Horningford, PA at automatic signal 174 and worked my way east and then stopped at Lewistown, PA. Train action before noon was on the slow side (only five between 7:30 to 9:30 AM followed by a two-hour lull). One of these morning trains was empty oil NS 67Z with the DL&W heritage unit trailing going through Lewistown, PA.
Port Royal, PA at automatic 151 was my next spot. Action picked up a bit with five trains within an hour beginning with autorack NS 18N with a single GEVO followed by eastbound Amtrak Pennsylvanian with Amtrak engine #1. A half hour later was a meet between two intermodals, NS 21M with an SD60E leader and NS 26T with NS, CEFX and UP. Mixed freight NS 10N led by an SD60E wrapped up the action from Port Royal.
Action got a bit busier at the next spot at automatic signal 142 at Thompsontown, PA. I have to say that my favorite shot was NS 23Z with two SD60E's traversing the S-curve in the distance. The next train to pass through was NS 65X heading east with empty tankers for storage. The lash-up was great too, with GP40-2, GP38-2 and SD40-2. I ended up with six trains within an hour there.
My last spot trackside was at the former station in Duncannon, PA (now houses the business Blue Ridge Communications). There were quite a bit of westbounds leaving Harrisburg and a couple of eastbounds coming in. The train I ended on was autorack NS 15J with the same Patched Southern Pacific AC44CW on 26T on Good Friday, great way to end the train action on the NS Pittsburgh Line!
Finally, I dropped by Enola Yard for a look. There were quite a bit of the former Union Pacific SD90MAC's as well as a C40-8W rear-ended into an SD70M-2.
Anyway, I was very satisfied with this trip to the NS Pittsburgh Line and look forward to return here when I have time!
*Note: I'm really really NOT GOOD w/ train symbols. I try to get as many as I can through my scanner or asking other railfans around me (if any).*

The closer you get to Harrisburg Terminal/Enola, the more interesting it gets.

Raillashup Productions Thanks! Aside from Altoona and the west slope, there are a lot of great spots along this double main stretch between Tyrone and Harrisburg.
