    This perfectly illustrates why Superman can so effectively hide his identity with "just" a pair of glasses: it's not the glasses, it's the persona he adopts when he puts them on. And people find that so unbelievable, but what I find far more unbelievable is that a woman only has 4 items and $10 in her purse.

    I really like how at 0:47, Clark stands up tall and throws back his shoulders. He pretends that he's flinching, but he is also making sure Lois is completely shielded from harm. That's a Superman action, disguised as a "dorky Clark" action.

    The reason Christopher Reeve was so perfectly cast in these movies is not just because he was a great Superman, but because he was a perfect Clark Kent.

      Same thing with Peter parker and Tom Holland or Captain American and Chris Evans. That is their actual personality in life, so being themselves in films they pull off the characters. Also Chadwick Boseman as the King T'chala. May he live forever. Rest in power Christopher Reeve. You are missed sir.

      He's not wearing a suit, he's wearing a sport coat with khaki trousers. An ill-fitting coat (probably intentional), which you can see when he extends his gun (a Smith & Wesson Model 36). It's too short for him. Back in those days, it was normal for guys to wear at least a sport coat in public. Nowadays, everyone slogs around in track pants and T-shirts.
      The first part of the scene was shot in New York. The alley scene was shot at Pinewood Studios in England...you can tell by the signs on the buildings, which have English spellings.

      That's what made Christopher Reeves so perfect for this role. He's walking the tightrope of not letting on upfront that he is the Man of Steel yet dropping hints that there's more to Clark than what meets the eye.

    • @PredatorH2O
      @PredatorH2O 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @JC Denton He was his father. He didn't want anyone to discover him that early. He was wrong but it's realistic. And his relationship with Lois didn't need development. Love at fist sight does happen you know. What did you want half of the movie to be about them ?

    • @PredatorH2O
      @PredatorH2O 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @JC Denton I don't think it's written anywhere that Superman had the perfect parents but either way the movie wasn't about any of that. Besides you realise we are weak and corrupt in more ways than one. The movie suggests that despite that we are worth saving cause we can be better. There's the hope you want. Superman was raised and lived as a human and that's why he became the symbol of that hope. He became the perfect example of what a human can become. Not a superhero of course but someone that cares about everyone, that wants the best for his world and tries his hardest for it.

    • @PredatorH2O
      @PredatorH2O 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @JC Denton His father's reaction to the bus incident wasn't reflective at all of his upbringing or what his father taught him over the years. It was only about hiding his powers which was somethong good to teach him even though it gets complicated when lives are involved. Btw you can say his father didn't have to die without becoming ridiculous and saying he was a coward for sacrificing to protect his son. The scene where superman kills Zod was freaking brilliant. Others will find plenty of excuses why someone has to die. That he deserves it or is too dangerous to be left alive. But superman values every life as one should and it's actually tragic to him that he has to kill Zod with his own hands to save the lives he was threatening. Also I don't know what you were on about how superman should be based on how he grew up but that's definetely not how it works. You can't tell someone who he is based on his past.

    • @PredatorH2O
      @PredatorH2O 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @JC Denton The world isn't black and white you know. You can't say he's evil for that. Just rewatch the scene and read some other opinion. I can't convince you of anything when you grap on the slightest details to prove that it's "poorly written".

  • @MikeSmith-xv7es
    @MikeSmith-xv7es 3 ปีที่แล้ว +599

    What I love most about this scene isn't that Clark is (obviously) putting himself between Lois and the gun; it's that (given what we learned about his upbringing earlier in the film) he clearly would have done THE EXACT SAME THING even if he was not bulletproof. And it's that innate, old-fashioned, chivalrous decency which makes the character tick...!

      Absolutely agree. Playing Superman isn't the hard part IMO. Any sufficiently good looking guy with a great body and muscles and acting ability can pull it off...
      ... but playing Superman AND Clark Kent... that's the challenge and nobody pulled it off like Christopher Reeve. Not even close. He seamlessly and effortlessly can go from Clark Kent to Superman to Clark Kent again in 3 seconds with a furrowed brow, weak chin and slack jaw to slight grin and almost imperceptible eyebrow "wink" and glance and back. Perfect. The slight Superman fanfare that goes with it seals the deal, but even with it muted, it's all there in Christopher Reeve's face.

      It was the second movie I saw as a boy with Star Wars being the first. The cinematic score by John Williams. The brilliance by Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman. The beauty of Margot Kidder and Valerie Perrine. The great acting of Jackie Cooper, Ned Beatty and Glen Ford. Last but not least the excellence of Christopher Reeve. He made this then 9 year old believe that a man could fly. That’s why Superman is my favorite hero.

    the acting is near perfect in this scene, it perfectly portray the superman story, 0:10 Clark just step up and cover Lois right away with his body as a shield (protector sign), 0:40 Clark just shows his super positive attitude along with optimism (cheer and joy), 1:06, Lois stupidity gets herself into trouble and Clark Kent save her (comics regular stupidity)... 1:30 Clark down played his feat of bullet catch and pretend to be weak (the hero hiding side)...
    a short 2 minutes scene completely cover what superman is all about.

    • @paulwalsh2344
      @paulwalsh2344 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yessss... lots of actors have played Superman well, but ONLY Christopher Reeve has perfected Clark Kent. And how he was able to switch between Supes and Kent so effortlessly was just superb acting. Now the acting from just about everybody in those Donner Superman movies was over-the-top and comic book-y... but it was a movie about a comic book character, done in the 70's so what do you expect. But Reeve's performance in those heroic and meek scenes are gold.

    This scene is the reason why Reeve is the best Superman. In this scene, we actually see a HUGE contrast between the confident figure of Kal-El, the last son of Krypton and the nerdy, awkward Clark Kent. Even for the audience, who already know he's the same person, it feels like we're watching two separate characters on the screen, all thanks to Reeve's amazing performance. It's so much better than the most recent movie adaptations of the character we've gotten. With Routh and Cavill, especially Cavill, there never seems to be an effort to make Superman's alter egos feel like two separate people. They just sort of rely on the glasses shtick and nothing more. I feel that's one of, if not THE most important element of adapting ANY superhero, whether it be movies, television or any other medium.
