    This is Donald F. Duncan Jr., (1927-2003). His father, Donald F. Duncan, Sr. (1892-1971) founded the company back in the 1920s that churned out millions of Duncan yo-yos. Junior later helped popularize the toy himself. He died in a single car crash along with his wife Donna in 2003 in New Mexico. He was 76. Junior was made president of the company in 1950, and took over the company with brother Jack when Senior retired in 1957. Ironically, Duncan, Sr. also died in a car accident in 1971 in Palm Springs.

      In the early 1970s when I was growing up there commercials for Duncan yoyos were awesome 👍. Needless to say I did my best to perform a lot of the stunts and tricks that they were able to do with the yo-yos.

    I remember at that time, either owning or examining someone else's yo-you that didn't have the traditional shape (known as "The Imperial"). I had one that was shaped like a flying saucer and my brother had a "Butterfly".

    Since I don't see Vahan Nisanian's usual post giving the date on which a pre-recorded episode was pre-recorded, let me add that this episode was pre-recorded on Sunday, 27 May 1962, before the evening's live episode.
    "Sayonara," for which Red Buttons won an Oscar for Best Supporting Oscar in 1958, was his first featured role in a movie. (He had appeared in "Winged Victory" in 1944, while still in the military during World War II - and was credited - and had an uncredited bit part as a jump-master in "13 Rue Madeleine" in 1946.) And he did, indeed, go on to play some very interesting parts in the movies over the years, including "Imitation General," "The Big Circus," "Hatari!" (which he plugged on this episode), "Five Weeks In A Balloon," "The Longest Day," "Gay Purr-ee" (he's the voice of Robespierre), "A Ticklish Affair," "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Up From The Beach," "Harlow" (the Carroll Baker film, in color), "Stagecoach" (the 1966 color remake; he's very good as the whiskey drummer, and the movie is very good, too), "The Shoot Horses, Don't They?", "Who Killed Mary What'sername?", "The Poseidon Adventure," "Gable and Lombard," "Pete's Dragon," "Movie Movie," and "It Could Happen To You." (He also did very well in a substantial role in the 1985 made-for-TV movie "Reunion at Fairborough," which marked the last of Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr's on-screen collaborations.)
    Red Buttons was less successful when it came to starring in a TV series in the 1960s and beyond, his only such foray being "The Double Life of Henry Phyfe," which lasted only 17 episodes on ABC in the fall of 1966. But he worked regularly in TV over the years, having 4-5 episode recurring-role story arcs in "Knots Landing" in 1987, in "ER" in 1995 (and a reprise of said role in 2005), and in "Street Time" in 2002.

I can imagine the children of the panelists razzing their parents for not guessing the occupation, especially when it was established that the product was associated with games.

      Those crinoline petticoats were miserable. I lived in Phoenix where hardly anyone had A/C at that time when I was in school (50s-60s) (every one almost does now!!) but those ### petticoats would stick to the back our legs and we had to pull and push and rearrange them when standing up! Very uncomfortable, luckily the fad wasn’t around very long by then and pencil skirts became the rage!!

    I was really impressed with John Daly's closing words to the two young lobster catchers just before they were ready to exit. He was so encouraging and so positive. For a moment he served as a loving father-figure and a wonderful role model who was willing to show his humility when offering his blessings to these two young women. He is a hero.

      @WhatsMyLine  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup, they sure were. It's referenced at times during the introductions. I don't think they were literally next door neighbors, but they referred to each other neighbors many times.

    • @SuperWinterborn
      @SuperWinterborn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Joe Postove Arlene and Martin moved to Mount Kisco some years after Bennett and Phyllis. Arlene mentioned it in an earlier episode, but I don't remember which. From the mid-50's I think.

    • @savethetpc6406

      SuperWinterborn Joe Postove What's My Line?
      I think I remember Arlene mentioning Bennett as her Mount Kisco neighbor several times in the episodes I have watched, but I also specifically recall her mentioning it as a first-time thing in one of her introductions of Bennett. I couldn't connect any of these references to specific episodes either, though. From page 137 of "Arlene Francis: A Memoir": "The house we built was adjacent (as those things go in the country, which meant a few acres away) to Bennett and Phyllis Cerf's house..." Somewhere I thought I'd read that the Gabels actually bought the land on which they built the house from the Cerfs. I thought it was in the same book somewhere, but I checked each page that is referenced in the index in connection with either Bennett or Phyllis Cerf, and I haven't found it yet. There's no entry for "Mount Kisco" in the index. This is going to bother me until I find it, so I'm not giving up -- just stopping the search for now. I think Arlene and Martin also continued to rent a hotel apartment in Manhattan in addition to maintaining their Mount Kisco home.

    • @MrJoeybabe25
      @MrJoeybabe25 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SaveThe TPC How long a drive was it from Mt. Kisco to NYC? It seems that Bennett drove in from there often. Did Bennett and Phyllis have a Manhattan apartment? Back in the rent control days it was not that uncommon for a wealthy person to have a large apartment for a couple hundred a month. Or is that apocryphal?

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joe Postove It's about an hour's drive-- but what I want to know is, why do you think rent control in NYC is in the past?!? :)
      There are two cities-- just two-- that have had severe rent control policies in place since WWII: NYC and San Francisco. Now take a wild guess which are the two most expensive cities in the country to find an apartment in. Go ahead, guess. I'll wait here.
      Next, take a wild guess which two cities I've lived in most of my adult life. And why I've lived on the edge of financial ruin for the past 15 years.

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      John Daly was badly in need of a rudimentary refresher on biology. He gets animal taxonomy staggeringly wrong on a regular basis. I consider this his single biggest weakness as a moderator/parser of questions. Fortunately, the panel members are just as bad with this stuff as he is, so they all seem to be speaking the same (wildly wrong) language.

    • @MrJoeybabe25
      @MrJoeybabe25 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you say (I hate to say it) that in some ways John Daly was a poser?

    • @WhatsMyLine
      @WhatsMyLine  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joe Postove Provocative question, but for me, an unprovocative answer: No.
      I just think animal classification is one area in which he was weak. When you see the handful of shows where other folks sub for him-- including Clifton Faddiman, the inventor of the position of panel moderator on radio with "Information, Please"-- you see how much John brought to the program as moderator. The handful of syndicated WML shows I've seen show Wally Bruner to be a total bore, and Larry Blyden somewhat entertaining, but no match for Daly. Just one guy's opinion.

    • @savethetpc6406
      @savethetpc6406 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Joe Postove
      I have also noticed how often John makes mistakes about or is totally ignorant of animal classification, but those who catch lobsters are correctly referred to as "lobster fishermen," and the contestants were the ones who agreed that their product was "some kind of fish," so I don't fault John regarding this particular case so much. I do fault him with his decision to make a big fuss about not telling the panel exactly where the contestants came from, yet saying that they came from New England. If he really wanted to make sure the panel had no geographical clues, he should have refrained from telling where they were from all together. I think he felt really bad about it when Bennett guessed so quickly and tried to make it up to the girls by keeping them on for a while, as well as flipping all the cards, so I forgive him. :)

      I'm glad you observed that, because that always struck me as odd when two mystery guests had to sit on the same chair. Also, there was some difficulty for the guests to hear what the panelists were saying; this occurred on many occasions that I observed after having watched a number of these episodes. There must have been something wrong with the way the mics were not clearly picking up the panel's voices; something was lost in the enunciation process, I guess. It was a great show, but very little money went into producing it, that's for sure.

      It's funny that still, in 1962, plastics had not reached into every corner of the manufacturing world yet. When Mr Duncan said yes to wood, I was surprised. I can't remember ever seeing a wooden yo-yo. By the time I was doing yo-yos in the late '60s, I think plastic yo-yos were all there were. "Plastics." said Mr McGuire to Benjamin Braddock. And he was right.

      @Blue Camus I still have one I got around this time as a gift when I was a kid. It's wooden.
      I can never figure out why the panel never comes right out and asks if a product is recreational. Or a toy.

      I actually agree with you here. Mr. Daly was not letting Mr.Duncan talk at all during this repartee he was engaged in with one of the panelists. It was annoying! However, I loved the exactness of your perception here--and as it was presented within the brevity of your comment above.

    Dear Dorothy - please forgive me, but to criticize your introduction of Martin Gabel - there's one adjective I would never use in describing Martin Gabel, and that adjective would be "attractive"

    • @WhatsMyLine

      Dorothy might forgive you. I'm not sure Arlene would. :)

    • @galileocan

      True, but in Dorothy's defence, perhaps the reference of attractiveness was related to Martin's personality

      Galileocan g
      I think Dorothy may have had a teensy bit of a crush on Martin, and on Bennett too. I don't think either of them were her physical type, but from what I've read, I don't think her own husband was ever particularly sweet to her, and I think both Bennett and Martin usually were. Also, I think she admired the sweet, loving relationship that Martin and Arlene had with each other, and perhaps she found Martin's loving attentiveness to his wife to be very attractive. I certainly do.
