In 2014, SJG released a reprint of the 4th edition box set - I picked up a copy in 2015 and it was every bit as crunchy as I remembered from my misspent youth (my first ever game was in 1982/3 and was 6x scale using 1:32 scale toy cars). I did play a few games at 3x scale using Hotwheels with a friend at the club in 2015, but not since then. I've played Gaslands a few times. It's good fun, but not as crunchy as Car Wars (original rules - I haven't seen 6th edition, so can't compare).
While 6th edition is not as crunchy as the original, they did do an amazing job on the game and it plays a lot like you remember - or had wished it played back in the day. I highly recommend it, though you need the right group as this is not really a style of game that's popular these days.
Great video. One small comment is that one of the kickstarter stretch goals was to create a motorcycle expansion. There has been no word on when that might happen as they've been busy retooling the base game packaging to make it more affordable. Steve Jackson has however categorically ruled out big rigs which I think is a shame. But I can see how the scale would make it difficult.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, that's too bad for big rigs but looking forward to possibly adding bikes!
They say on the stl pack that they work with hot wheels, so if you want a war rig you could pick that pack up.
Love this game! The game is designed and balanced for 4 players... However it works ok with 6 players. Longer timeframe. More death and destruction 😂
