    According to the Nuggetshooter's Bible by Jim Straight - the use of the big coil vs the small coil varies depending on the stability, and whether or not you want to go back over the same areas again with the separate coil. You get more stability with a smaller coil, but the larger elliptical can get you more depth and help you find bigger nuggets(just like how the data shows at the end of the video - so generally its a better choice). But the book also says that the smaller coil presents an advantage when ground balancing allowing a prospector to fine tune the sensitivity. but the use of the small coil also depends on the size of the pickers, and nuggets that you are finding. I hope this makes sense.

      The missing component is mineralized soil. All air tests are void compared with real soil involved. Just depends on the amount of mineralization in the area your hunting. Heavy minerals and you could loose a lot of depth.

    • @wchurst
      @wchurst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@davidcox2197 I thought that was the point of using the Zip-loc bags full of screened material between the coil & target nugget...or did I miss something here ?!?
      Of course, I would have prefered to see the bagged material stacked just as high as the swinging target at all points of the test - but honestly, that was IMHO
      a pretty good comprehensive test compared to 90% of the other tests that I see posted on here. :-)

    Very good Test with SHOWN Results. Good work, thank you I will pass it on to others. Might I suggest doing another test on Coins, Jewelry, and Relics? Looking at where the Depth of different materials register and also the differences in tones between materials and between the 2 coils. If one can get accustomed to the various tones that materials produce it increases the good hits many times over and is a must for beginners to excel with a detector. This is more than just a Gold Machine although it is its Primary use. Right now I can't do Rivers and Creeks because of high water but Parks, Beaches, Schools, Parts of the Oregon Trail and more are accessible nearly year-round............ Enjoy and Good Luck, Keep Swingin' & Diggin'!

    Thanks for taking the time to do that, plus the editing it must have been a bear. I was always under the impression that the larger coil just gave you a little more coverage. Keeping it simple and not using any big expensive words is appreciated too. I've never tried my big coil and now I'm sticking with the small one. I heard though, one was waterproof and the other wasn't, if anyone can comment on that ? Great video

      I used the big coil in water and it got water inside and malfunctioned.. sent off to minelab and they repaired for free as it is supposed to be waterproof. The large coil has a little valve on top that can cause issues and let in water. The little one doesn't. So stick to the little one if your going to get it wet I reckon.

    Good job on the testing! That 5" coil is definitely a beast! I found it is slightly more sensitive to the small nuggets than a 6" on my old XT17000. It is much more sensitive to the really small stuff than a 6'x8' Sadie coil on my GPX5000.The Monster is much easier to run than either of those detectors though...and no threshold! Love the Monster! Thanks for posting!

    • @romeo1550
      @romeo1550 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whoa! You have an xt17000! Do you have any pointers on settings? I have one and really enjoy it but it's been a while since I last used it. Can you use any coil with it or only certain types? Also, how long will the battery pack last before needing replaced? If you have some time, drop me a reply. I would love to see your setup. I am in AZ by the way. Take care!

    • @azdesertrat6969
      @azdesertrat6969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@romeo1550 I did have an XT 17000. It finally died about a month ago. I have the stock 8" coil as well as the Coiltek 6" and 15" that are made for the XT or Eureka Gold (I never used the 15"). The stock coil is a pretty good coil and I detected a .017 gram speck of gold with it. The battery lasted all day when it was new, but I always carried the AA backup pack, just in case ( I still have that, too). My advice? Learn the machine and the different sounds it makes. Use headphones. Turn down the sensitivity till the detector quiets down some. Sensitivity will depend on the ground you're detecting. I've used it as low as the 10 o'clock position, as well as all the way up. You will always hear hot rocks and hot ground...dig ALL targets! I carry test nuggets (pieces of lead will work) to help distinguish between hot ground and a target. I didn't use the discriminator. I set the threshold as quiet as possible without the sound breaking up. The switch settings I used most of the time were normal, normal, 32KHZ and tracking. I would switch from tracking to fixed for pinpointing. Once you get used to the sounds it makes, experiment with the different settings to see what works best for you in a particular area. Much depends on the detectorist. There are days that I can run the sensitivity really high and other days that I just can't deal with all the noise that a high sensitivity makes. The XT 17000 is a great detector! Sorry, a little lengthy...

      @@azdesertrat6969 awesome post and great info. I have yet to find gold with it but it has helped me find areas of promise and I was able to find gold that way.
      As for the detector, you said that your machine finally quit working. What were the symptoms? Currently mine is giving me fits and I can't tell if it's battery related or the machine just not working. I will charge the battery, turn on the machine and get a click and that's it. Nothing else. Any details you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I think that regardless of whether or not my machine still works I will get the gold monster. Thanks again for your help.

      @azdesertrat6969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@romeo1550 Mine just screamed at full volume when I turned it on. None of the knobs or switches made any difference, with a coil attached or not. When you turn it on, it's supposed to give a loud tone that fades to your threshold tone. If it just clicks it may be that your battery is dead...the loud tone is supposed to be a battery test. if you have a multimeter, you can test the battery. Fully charged, a new battery pack should be around 14 volts. Maybe Batteries Plus could test it for you and supply a new battery if yours is bad. Minelab's prices for batteries are ridiculous, if they even still make them. If you find the machine is bad, the Gold Monster is awesome.

    Nice to know deep targets makes it "worth" your while to dig. Maybe keep stacking the bags of dirt. Wider bags too. Establish a dirt attenuation factor. Then you could do tests without dirt of that type of dirt. Why use auto1? Be interesting to see the test with your GPZ4000 PI vs VLF. Make that gold sample as your test subjects going forward for data comparison trends across all your tests. Keep doing detector tests. This video triggered me to subscribe.

    I just bought a GM 1000. Came with a guide in different languages. I have used TH-cam to show me what to do but I dont know how to switch from auto 1 to auto 2.

      The left button.
      When the screen shows full blackout on the left it's in auto 2. The most sensitive setting.
      When you back off one click it's in auto 1. Less sensitive to ground noise.
      All the lower positions are manual.

    Very interesting results. I have heard the same sort of thing can be expected between the 6" and 11" coils on the Equinox 800...6" is better for the small stuff

    Great video, thinking of getting one, but would like to see test with mineralised soil.

      Thanks for the comment. I have not had many situation where the ground was too hot for the Gold Monster... Though there has been a few. Its always good to have a PI as well.

    This is from using the detector hundreds of hours over many places: the auto settings will vary by a lot, according to ground conditions, because the detector automatically changes the sensitivity. Sometimes the ability to detect a piece of metal is reduced greatly in the auto 1 and 2 settings. Auto 1 is more aggressive in reducing ground noise, auto 2 is less aggressive in reducing ground noise. So, depending on ground conditions, depth results with auto setting can vary, and could be 1/2 of the results of these and the hottest manual setting.

    The more you place a coil over an object the more it discriminates it. Detectors always get the best depth in undisturbed soil. Or damp soil. You can lose a target by repeatedly running a coil over. This is why serious gold detectors always use all metal mode. Or pulse induction machines.
