I used to be best friends with my dad as a toddler, I was always following him around like a puppy. He would obviously be tired from work and all but he always put on a smile for me. Over the years, he got more stressed, he was always angry, and more cold. And then his mother died. He went off the deep end and he isn’t the same father I know. And yet sometimes, even when I’m steaming with extreme hate and disgust at him, I see parts of myself in him and I know he’s struggling. I’m not saying to forgive your parent, that’s your choice. But it’s easier to figure out where they’re coming from and why they’re so fucked up so when you eventually leave or cut ties, it’s easier to move on without that heavy feeling in your chest.

This... Hit home. He's so lucky to even find them still sitting on the couch, when mine came home we'd all disappear into our bedrooms and pretend to be already asleep. Not because we didn't Love him, but because we were scared of him. Which is/was quite common in the motherland. A very sad thing. Children and fathers don't have a close relationship most of the time because most African Dads want to be feared, not sure if they do it on purpose or it's their serious unapproachable demeanor? Sadly he passed end of 2019 and he never got a chance to know me as an adult coz of living in different continents. After 18years of being apart , the next time I saw him was when I went back home for his funeral. Tough journey it was. Saying all this to say, let's cherish both our parents when we still have them. I'm grateful for the years I had with my Dad even though for the most part we grew up fearing him but it got better the older I got, I could have conversations with him. Miss him so much but all is well. He's in a better place. Beautiful family this is. ❤️

This... Hit home. He's so lucky to even find them still sitting on the couch, when mine came home we'd all disappear into our bedrooms and pretend to be already asleep. Not because we didn't Love him, but because we were scared of him. Which is/was quite common in the motherland. A very sad thing. Children and fathers don't have a close relationship most of the time because most African Dads want to be feared, not sure if they do it on purpose or it's their serious unapproachable demeanor? Sadly he passed end of 2019 and he never got a chance to know me as an adult coz of living in different continents. After 18years of being apart , the next time I saw him was when I went back home for his funeral. Tough journey it was. Saying all this to say, let's cherish both our parents when we still have them. I'm grateful for the years I had with my Dad even though for the most part we grew up fearing him but it got better the older I got, I could have conversations with him. Miss him so much but all is well. He's in a better place.
