How design cycles is fascinating. I grew up, as many of my generation, with the living room we called the "museum room" in the front and no one was allowed to live in it. Yes, my grandma had an off limits living room and so did my mom. I do not like open concept although my house is slightly open concept with walls. I wanted a separate living and family rooms when I was looking for my house.
And why do they call it a "living" room? I had a friend when I was growing up and the very first time I ever entered the "living room" was for my wedding shower when I was 19. My family, however, was poor and we lucky to have furniture.
Personally ...I decorate my home to make me and my family happy. We live here,we deserve to be in a space we love to be in. We bought a really outdated but structurally sound 120 year old farmhouse. We updated the light fixtures and ceiling fans before we moved in. We also painted all the walls in shades of neutral gray to bring more cohesiveness to the space. We couldn't afford to overhaul the kitchen right off the bat so we painted the cupboards and put up a contact paper (vinyl) backsplash to cover up the untreated beadboard. White trim. Ivory drapes to the floor. Big unique art. Storage pieces with doors and drawers to stash all the clutter. Rugs big enough for the space.

Great video! I totally agree with having manicured rooms. I live in a center hall colonial house: formal living room on one side and formal dining room on the other. Some people believe that I am wasting space since these rooms are not used that often. However, I love them. They are carefully decorated with things that I love and they are beautiful. You are right, these are the rooms that people see when they enter my home and I always receive compliments. I have a comfy family room on the back of the house and I have an eat-in (do people still use that term?) kitchen that we live in. I just love knowing that I have these other beautiful spaces to entertain guests. It works for me. Everyone has to find what fits their lifestyle and gives them pleasure.
