      @@653j521 All apartment buildings are able to turn off your electrical for JUST your apartment. If your fusebox isn't IN your apartment then it will be accessible by the superintendent. You might need to coordinate a time with them to flick your switch for an hour but it only takes ten minutes to switch out a light so that's plenty of time. It's actually SUPER easy to do. Just find a youtube tutorial and you'll see how easy it is. And yes, just hold on to the original and put it back before moving out.

      MOST of these ideas are renter friendly, just with a few tweaks or thought. I've applied all of these to rentals over the years. The tricky part can be where to put the stuff you are taking out. If you discuss with the landlord about where to store things they may be willing to put things in a basement or furnace room. Any time you upgrade a rental they rarely argue UNLESS it's a strata. Stratas are just evil period.

    How design cycles is fascinating. I grew up, as many of my generation, with the living room we called the "museum room" in the front and no one was allowed to live in it. Mom guarded that room with all of her might. It was always impeccable. As I grew up, married and had children, the "great room" was all the rage...knock down the living room wall and have one big room...Now, the living room is back...LoL!! Love your channel because you make style accessible by explaining the principles behind it. Kiva you rock!

      Yes, my grandma had an off limits living room and so did my mom. I do not like open concept although my house is slightly open concept with walls. I wanted a separate living and family rooms when I was looking for my house.

      And why do they call it a "living" room? I had a friend when I was growing up and the very first time I ever entered the "living room" was for my wedding shower when I was 19. My family, however, was poor and we lucky to have furniture.

    Personally ...I decorate my home to make me and my family happy. We live here,we deserve to be in a space we love to be in. We still keep a general vibe in the main living areas but we most definitely have a mid century eclectic style. People who come over like it as well because they say it's comfortable. I've even heard that it reminds someone of being t their grandparents yet modern and stylish. We mix old with new with a dash of curiosities.

    We bought a really outdated but structurally sound 120 year old farmhouse.
    We updated the light fixtures and ceiling fans before we moved in. We also painted all the walls in shades of neutral gray to bring more cohesiveness to the space.
    We couldn't afford to overhaul the kitchen right off the bat so we painted the cupboards and put up a contact paper (vinyl) backsplash to cover up the untreated beadboard.
    White trim.
    Ivory drapes to the floor.
    Big unique art.
    Storage pieces with doors and drawers to stash all the clutter.
    Rugs big enough for the space.

    Great video! I totally agree with having manicured rooms. I live in a center hall colonial house: formal living room on one side and formal dining room on the other. Some people believe that I am wasting space since these rooms are not used that often. However, I love them. They are carefully decorated with things that I love and they are beautiful. You are right, these are the rooms that people see when they enter my home and I always receive compliments. I have a comfy family room on the back of the house and I have an eat-in (do people still use that term?) kitchen that we live in. I just love knowing that I have these other beautiful spaces to entertain guests. It works for me. Everyone has to find what fits their lifestyle and gives them pleasure.

    A former neighbour of mine who is a builder and does renovationprojects told me that one way to trick the eye to an airy feel is to have the paint from the ceiling reach down at the walls a decimeter or two. This might be pointless if you already have high ceiling but it makes some difference if you live in a standard apartment or a parcelhouse built with energyconsumption costs in thought, like the 70s "parcelhouse" or afterwards where the room tend to have a boxy feel.

    I’ve been binge watching your videos lately. Love your content ♥️; thanks for sharing your spirit! Just a small note, I find the window reflections in your glasses distracting. 🤓 I just want to enjoy your presentation and tips and I often find myself being thrown off by the flashes of window. Just wanted to mention. Thanks and on with the show!
    Oh, and the yellow highlighter boxes at the bottom of the screen are really helpful. 👍🏾 Thank you.

    Your videos are super informative and full of really cool details! I have a 140yr old home that I still haven't done that much to since I bought it. One thing that is super annoying is that the front living room doesn't have a wired overhead light. I asked electrician and he said this would cost like 10k to install because they would have to literally rip a hole in the walls and the ceiling. This is a bummer because it's a huge room that would look awesome with a huge chandelier. I'm wondering if you have any tips on lighting in absence of overhead light fixture!

      There are actually lightbulbs that are battery operated now. You can plug them directly to a regular light fixture and then turn them on via remote. My entryway is the same. We converted an older home and our entryway was left out when the electrician did the electrical for some reason. So when I found out about these lightbulbs, I immediately ordered them they were life changing!

    I have 3 unused bedrooms & 1 extra family room. I don't want to stage them all. Should I just choose the room closest to my front door?

    Just discovered your channel and I'm in love! Love the useful tips, agree with the light fixture/chandelier tip! Do you have any tips for good light fixtures for a cabin? It's so rustic but want to get a more modern but still rustic feel!

    What is your backsplash supposed to match? The counter? The cabinet? The walls? The floor? I cannot find a backsplash that I like that I think would look good and match the kitchen.

    • @HosCreates
      @HosCreates 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It needs to match the countertops the most especially if the countertops are stone. Cabinet colors can be sanded of and restrained or repainted. Wall color too can change

    • @Preservestlandry
      @Preservestlandry 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put a piece of clear acrylic and the wall color will show through. I've done that before.

    whats a lighting solution for getting rid of boob lights in low headroom spaces?

    • @KivaBrent
      @KivaBrent  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Switch boob lights to recessed lights or opt for a flush mount chandelier!
