The whole tone of the piece reminded me how bad things were on the terraces back then. I grew up thinking violence at grounds was the norm. I bet Villa were breathing a huge sigh of relief when the Anderlecht riot in the semi-final only got them a "your next home match in Europe will be behind closed doors" verdict instead of being thrown out.
It’s amazing how many major sports events have been attended by Gary Newbon down the years
Where do you find these gems?
And the stadium is still there in it’s original glory. The oldest still standing stadium from 1937 in the dutch competition
Hi Gary dutch tv made a documentary about this called "De Blauwe Stad" (Blue City) after the Blue Boys or Coppers
Newbon wasn't allowed in the dugout and had to put on the Villa kit and pretend to be a reserve player to interview the players after the game!😂😂😂

I was in the Royal Navy at the time, and it was during the Falklands War.
So Villa got 9,000 tickets? Looks like fans have been screwed over by uefa for a lot longer than I realised.
Gary Newbon you're a proper xanka
The policeman is straight out of the fast shows gay Dutch policemen sketches
They were not used to trouble, feyenoord and ajax were as good as gold
😂
