My dog is a street dog from Egypt and apparently they have the same problem there. Egyptians want purebred dogs, not the very dogs that are all around them. There are even purebred dogs that people have dumped that you can adopt there. But most seem to want to import a dog from elsewhere. I love following your shelter because it reminds me a lot of where my girl came from.

I’m an extreme empath often overwhelming but I can say Trevor will be on my mind from now till Saturday or until we see an update he’s home and ok. Thank you for doing this Emma for adopting him and for #whispaws
We’ve adopted dogs from shelters and rescues and gotten dogs from breeders. The one thing that’s super important to remember about rescue dogs is that they can have a lot of trauma and trauma-induced behaviors. If you don’t have the patience, time, money (in potential extensive healthcare treatments like my grandparents were surprised with when they rescued their dog, or specialized training) or ability to take on a dog like that, then I’d rather you not adopt a rescue dog because they don’t need more instability. They are most likely to be returned to shelters by people who had no clue what they were doing. That’s bad for the dog and encourages a throwaway mindset. Some of that can be solved by people spending time in rescues and shelters to meet dogs and find one that suits them and responds to them best. But in reality, not everyone is going to spend hours over time in a shelter to get to know the dogs before adopting. They’re going to go the day of or maybe once before. So in some cases, it is best for everyone to find a reputable breeder who can give a full explanation of a dog’s history, and such breeders will require their dogs be returned to them if anything happens. I know people like to bash breeders, but they serve a purpose. And it’s the ethical breeders who are doing things like fixing pugs’ and bulldogs’ (and any flat faced dog and cat) muzzle, and trying to correct the bent back in German shepherds and address those issues that awful, inhumane kennel club breed standards and bad breeders introduced in certain breeds.
My husband and I rescued our first dog that had come to the shelter and had to have his eye removed. No one wanted him because of this and we adopted him and loved him until he passed. We then adopted our next dog from a rescue that got him from a puppy mill. It has taken a lot of work to get him to trust and understand that we would never hurt him, but 6 years and adding 2 kids later we are one big happy family! I would never shop, always adopt! :) Thank you for everything you are doing! Can't wait for Trevor to be living his best life with you and your family!
