"try to cry out in the heat of the moment, possessed by a fury that burns from inside" this actually pretty well describes how I would feel at a live Joy Division show.

I've always associated this song with the bleak atmosphere of a night hospital. The bassline and drums reminds me of a heartbeat, bam-bam, bam-bam, pulsing weakly and lost through the empty hallways until it stops and life ends. So incredibly sad. :(

Oddly enough this song reminds me of my dying grandmother. She died in an eldercare facility that was connected to a hospital. This version perfectly captures the tension of her declining mortality, in retrospect of course.

Curiously I associate that "Eternal" with "Life Eternal" from black metal band Mayhem.

I'd say 'The Eternal' is tied with 'In a Lonely Place'.

@@juergen4ever agreed same key as Truth too, had the pleasure of being backstage with New Order in 1982 and asked Bernard about Truth and asked who wrote it, and he replied him and Ian, yet I've never seen that documented??? All including Decades wrote in C D E

According to guitarist Bernard Sumner, Ian Curtis wrote “The Eternal” about a child with Down’s Syndrome who lived near him. The child was not allowed to leave his house. When, Ian moved back to Macclesfield when he was 22 he noticed how, even though his life had changed, the child’s life appeared to have remained the same, as Stephen Morris told GQ in July 2020:
"He used to go and see him at the labour exchange, but you’d also see him playing in the park and he never seemed to age. He just always stayed the same."

    The Eternal
Procession moves on, the shouting is over
Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone
Talking aloud as they sit round their tables
Scattering flowers washed down by the rain
Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden
Watching them pass like clouds in the sky
Try to cry out in the heat of the moment
Possessed by a fury that burns from inside
Cry like a child, though these years make me older
With children my time is so wastefully spent
A burden to keep, though their inner communion
Accept like a curse an unlucky deal
Played by the gate at the foot of the garden
My view stretches out from the fence to the wall
No words could explain, no actions determine
Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall

as dark and emotional as it gets without being in any way pathetic, like so many other so-called new-wave or "gothic" bands tend to be. timeless.

Oh my God, even so many years later, and in this killing version, how this music is just hijacking my heart and my soul without any comeback, my tears are so heavy.
    RIP Ian, my dear brother.

I am not 100% sure but I believe this may be the 1st time they played it live. I think this may be the 1st encore and people never heard it before and minds blown. Why it's so quiet. People were ready for a dancy hit and they do this! because Joy Division! Amazing!
