HP LaserJet P2015dn repair - Baking the Formatter board

  • May 2024 update: Printer started behaving the same way as it did in March 2021, so we did board bake #3. I also replaced the toner, as it finally got to the point where the print was still faded despite giving the toner a good shake. I got over 4300 prints on the 53A toner, which had an install date of September 2016. I also examined the side panel and think it may actually be easier to unclip from the back of the unit rather than the front.
March 2021 update: After 5 years of home use, I had to bake the board again. A few months ago the printer developed a strange problem - when it sat idle for a day while powered on, the status lights would say it was online, but when I tried printing to it my computers would report it being offline. Power cycling the printer would fix it, but on some boot attempts I'd get this error. A couple weeks ago, it wouldn't boot past this error so I rewatched my video (thanks, past me!) and baked the board again- this time at 400F for 8 minutes. The printer has been working perfectly for over a week without the need to reboot it on a daily basis! Given my most recent experience of the problem progressing over time, and the fact this problem seems so widespread with this model, I have a suspicion there is a design defect where a component on the board is running hot enough to melt itself away from the board.
Original Description: I found a lot of information suggesting how to do this, but very little information with the exact details! The error condition for this printer will be a paper jam light or sometimes a toner out light when those problems don't actually exist. Before doing this I checked all of the paper sensors to make sure there were no bits of paper stuck in them. Please pardon my poor video taking skills; I'm better at fixing things than taking video! I honestly didn't think this fix would work, but I had nothing to lose and I was encouraged by dozens of people reporting this repair worked and saved them about $100 on a replacement board.

This is the second time within around five years that I’ve used this method to bring back my printer from the dead.
Hard to believe that baking a printer’s component actually works, but my two successes prove that it does.
Ten minutes to remove the board… eight minutes in the oven at 180 degrees… ten minutes to cool… and ten minutes to refit the board.
    Printer working like new!
Thank you again for posting this video. You continue to save me the expense of a new printer.

Thank you!! My P2015n has been fixed! Baked at 190 Celsius (pre-heated) for 7 minutes, while also unsticking the plastic protector sheet from the board, just to be sure nothing melts. Other plastic components, such as socket connectors, were unharmed - don't worry, they will not melt.

I have had this printer in my school library for about 10 years and could not get it to work after replacing the cartridge in it. I ordered two new cartridges that would be wasted money if I could not get it to work, so I thought, why not try this! I followed your video for removing the formatter board and baking it in my oven for 8 minutes @ 375*. I am proud to report that this was the ticket that fixed my problem. Right now it is working perfectly!!! Thank you!!!

I have been trained by IBM, Apple, Compaq/HP in repair of computers, printers servers and more. I am an old dude. Retired and then some - so when my HP P2015 Laserjet came up with the paper jam icon lit - I did all of the normal things that one does when there was/is a paper jam. Even cleaned the pick up rollers etc. Bottom line when I saw this video - I figured what the heck - if this is a prank or joke - I was going to trash the printer anyway. So I put the control board in my "analog" oven at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Let it cool down - installed it back in the printer and - I laughed out loud when it started printing again. NO lit paper jam Icon. -I did melt an insulating material where a memory or function board plugs in. Not sure that will cause a heat issue since it cover an IC. But it worked - go figure.

This video is worth 100usd per view, as it saves you that much money. Or even more, as it makes a dead old printer into fully functioning good printer. Thanks a lot. I just had to remind myself of the procedure. And this video is not as easy to find as it used to be. Is it the big three algorithm? Big three meaning: Blackrock, Vanguard and State street, controling not only YT and google, but Microsoft, HP,...

This procedure still works! My very old P2015 started doing the "offline" and false error things a few weeks ago. I was considering getting something new, but thought I better Google the problem first. I found a number of references to "baking the board," but this video is by far the best thing out there. Tried it, and it seems to have fixed the problem (for now, at least). Thanks so much!

Your video saved my printer several years ago. AND once again the problem came back so I baked the motherboard again. YEAH it is once again working. Wonderful help thanks for doing this. FYI this tells us we can even bake it a second time if it quits working. Lots of hope THANKS

I cannot believe that this worked! It unbricked my hp2015dn! It wouldn't get past the single jam light indicator at power-on. Wouldn't print spec pages or anything. I pulled the board per this video and baked it at 375 deg F for 8 minutes. Let it cool for 15 min and reinstalled it. She's a workhorse again, full duplex. Great looking pages and speed. Thank you for leading the way on this crazy, but successful, idea.

    Thanks for this video.
Several years ago I paid $10 for a non-working HP2015dn. I found a printer repair website which described the formatter board bake fix. I fixed mine a better way with Stabilant contact enhancer.
That website had some good info about what was causing problems with a variety of products, especially the 2015.
2 things changed when the 2015 came out:
    1. The whole industry was rapidly transitioning to lead-free solder, which requires notably higher temperatures, is less ductile, in many ways is far less "error tolerant".
    2. With this change, HP decided to move it's PCB production to China.
After fixing the formatter board, I found this printer has to have the additional RAM to work reliably. I got it on eBay for about $15.
One other thing to note, this, and most other laser printers need to be plugged Directly into an outlet, Not a power strip, extension cord etc. because they need a Lot of Power to quickly heat up the fuser. You will see an odd variety of errors/print failures which go away when the printer has all the power it can use.
This is an excellent, small, duplexing B&W laser printer. Super cheap to operate, utterly reliable.

Good helpful video for those who need assistance but a couple notes.
When removing the cover, it is best to use a screwdriver to pry apart/remove the back of the side first. it is much more difficult to pry it from the front and you could damage it.
As for baking the board, you get the best consistency if you bake at 350 for 8 minutes as you did, but rather than remove the board, just open the oven door a little and let it cool down without touching the board. It allows a more stable environment in cooling, you won't flex the board, hit the standoffs or nuts, etc. Solder is still fluid, so movement can impact it.
Also, removing the memory shielding as you did is a good idea and baking the board upright as you did. Also, motherboard standoffs upside down work great as they will not move, so less fear. We have about 30 of these junk printers in our office and I have baked 2/3rds of them, some multiple times. Sad as HP has been bulletproof in the past, but this model is just not good. Baking is cheaper than buying new however and works for many different issue leading back to the formatter or I/O including ethernet port.

That worked. I used a preheated pan and 400f for 6 minutes. That was enough to re-flow some of the connections. This restored my printer LEDs to ready, restored my unresponsive NIC (no lights to correct lights) and resulted is cashed print jobs poring out from my PC. Weather it re-flowed solder joints on the board or corrected something internal to a component I do not know. Just to check connections before I baked the board I removed reinstalled it to no avail. It was the baking that fixed it. Thanks

Great video! I got a P2015d to work again by baking the formatter board for 8 min at 400 F, component side up, on a sheet of aluminum foil with aluminum foil balls holding up the corners of the board. Note: Pull the side cover off from the back, not the front.

I just tried it and it worked. The "Ready" light does not come on, so what, I can print from a network connection again! On my Windows 10 machine, I clicked "Add a printer" and clicked on the link at the bottom of the searching screen, "My printer wasn't found". Chose the button "My printer is older, help me find it" and POOF there it was! It never showed up before the 5 minute bake at 400°. After the bake, there it is! Installed the Microsoft PCL6 driver and wha-la... my networked printer is back. THANK YOU!

Always remember to add liquid flux under the chip or anything when reballing.
You could have used a heat gun station 825d+ to avoid melting plastic if worried about it!
Good info though i was unaware of this fault and the fix!

I am about to bake my board for the 8th or 9th time. The only thing I do differently is, after baking for 8 minutes at 375˚ F, I turn off the oven and open the door about half way. I then let the board cool gradually inside the oven. This fix has worked every time.

Thank you so much. Don't know how but it works! First try had no lights so had to make sure all connections were tight. Getting the left cover off is a struggle, seems like prying from the back with a screwdriver works best.

I didn't have high hopes for this fix cause I destroyed a laptop motherboard with a similar trick, discovered on TH-cam. But in this case the printer was going to go to the dumpster unless I could fix it. Well, darn if it didn't work! 350 F for 10 minutes with the convection fan turned on. I just had the board edges sitting on heatproof bricks then on a dinner plate. Thanks.
